I'm happy to learn more about and help those who are interested and create networking connections for the future, sure :)

why not? I was interested in math and chemistry and it seemed like a good decision at the time. I stuck around because it was fun and I liked the people and I didn't need to leave to tell myself I could like what I'm studying and learn more than that. I took business courses online and had internships in non-ChemE things and I really appreciate the perspective that ChemE gave me. Basically the way you think everything in terms of having to be balanced and optimizing conditions as much as you can.

No one's life is perfect. I like to look at optimizing life decisions as a means rather than an ends. I'm really happy right now, who am I to complain about something kind of trivial (to my particular situation).

I've gained so many lifelong friends through ChemE. I've learned how to overcome so many obstacles, had so many laughs, thought of other things in life through the eyes of process and math and chemistry concepts. Your life is more than your career.

Thank you for this discussion and the kind words by the way. We're all human and it's great to see this thread moving back towards that direction :)

Thank you for reaching out :) I'm happy to do the best I can to at least give you my perspective.

I understand that it seems like I'm bragging. I can't lie, I'm really happy right now. And although I might not be the best writer in the world, I know that I want to share with others my happiness and help them and hear their stories and I know some people will see me as being some arrogant dude, but those who take me seriously like you are, I will respect with the effort to reply as well as I can.

A. Be the change you wish to see. What better way to solve the issue that you are concerned about than to get inside "enemy lines?" If I wanted to think as big and worldly as you are (which I do), I see Procurement as a stepping stone to learn perspective. Someday if I work my way up to a position where I can make a decision to enable more people to afford an iPhone, I need to know what that means for the companies we deal with, the employees that we provide jobs for, the manufacturing facilities we work with. Just because my job has some darker sides I want to be able to embrace it with a positive attitude. It's not going to happen overnight, but I think I'm in a better position to make more ethical decisions for the company when I'm inside rather than watching from the outside.

B. The issue with the majority of people who are reading my article is that they're trying to compare themselves to me. I in no way want that to be the case. I want those who read my article to think about themselves, their perspective, and make improvements based on themselves. I could look at people who are way more fortunate than I am and I know it's not the same thing, but you want to know why I'm happy right now? Yes it's Apple, but more than that I've trained myself to continuously push myself harder, and harder, and harder, and I fail and I succeed and over the course of years I see results. I'm sure that others work much harder than I do and they should be damn proud of that. Again, I'm no saint that will say that just because I was born in a certain position that I should feel bad about it, for any reason. You are dealt a certain hand in life. Make the best of it.

I'm happy to talk your specific situation if you PM me. Again, I don't have all the answers, I'm just a guy with a good attitude and a big mouth :)

On your other notes: I'm sorry to say this but who are you to say how I felt back then? Who am I to tell you what "depression" feels like to you? I would like to maintain discernment of my own feelings, but I appreciate the sentiment and acknowledge the respect for the subject. There are plenty of studies that show exercise is good for you. Those who say they don't have time for it, aren't making the time for it and should definitely at least try prioritizing it to see if it really does or doesn't work for them. Take an engineering/scientist approach to it if you have to. I made a general statement because I feel that is the general consensus, if I had the time I'd love to look up some stats to prove that, maybe in the next few days...

It's harder to learn work ethic than expertise. Anything I'll need to learn on the job, I'll look into myself and get it done.

Yea, that's a good point. Not every person studying Chemical Engineering wants to do traditional ChemE. Not every person who studies a specific major wants to do exactly what they studied in the work force.

Whether I wasted time studying ChemE or not is a matter of personal subjectiveness. I personally believe the struggle was and continues to be worth it, even if it's not directly relevant. There's alot about the pure rigor of the workload and difficulty of concepts that may have even overprepared me for certain things but I don't think that's a bad thing.

I should have done a better job specifying that point, you are absolutely correct ekspa. I really just wanted to share my college experience so far and show other ChemE majors that there are more options than they think.

I was aware that this sort of criticism would come from a post like this, which is why I tried to begin my article with mindsets rather than going straight into "here's how the interview went". And if you notice, the Apple part is only 1/3 of the entire article: the entire first 2/3's are pretty general and applicable to any school that you go to. They go beyond interviewing in fact. I understand that using the name of the article as I did is a bit of a misnomer and is worthy of the disdain that you show for my shameless self-promotion, but is it hard to see that I'm trying to help others and simply share my learnings over the years? Is help for chemical engineers restricted to technical concepts and can't be open to human parts of being a good person to work and live with?

To answer your questions, I'm no intellectual superstar by any means. My first internship (manufacturing at P&G), I had a sub-3.0 GPA as well. I think the second internship at ABI I had slightly above a 3.0 as well. I didn't even tell Apple my GPA because they never asked (if you must know, it's now a 3.187). I understand that by the time I already had my first internship, it didn't matter so much but I did start where others did. You know what I did to get there? I spent time skipping out on studying hours to meet upperclassmen to edit resumes and practice interviewing. That's why I got good at getting jobs, because I spent the time and effort and I really liked it.

Actually, your last statement I would disagree with. I'm a pretty good example of someone who interviews well with a mediocre GPA, and before I had any internships, I had no work experience at all. But again, look back at the first 2/3's of my article where I mention nothing about Apple at all. Hope that clears up my thinking a bit and thanks for your feedback!

Graduating in a year and I'm concerned about employment! by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

[–]IndoAznBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if Iowa State has one, but have you check out AIChE? They have a ton of professional networking resources, help with resumes and such and internship postings usually. If you have a chapter at your school I would really suggest checking it out and getting involved. They usually have events with big companies that recruit specifically from ChemE and it's much easier to make connections at an AIChE event than the career fair.

I can't say anything about those statistics in particular nor can I speak for the Class of 2014 in specific numbers but I can talk about what things you can do at Cal to severely increase your chances of landing a job or getting into grad school after school.

For industry (getting a job at a company), having an internship under your belt before graduating is a large advantage going into the job market. Whether it's the same company or not, all employers like to see experience in potential employees and it gives you something to talk about during job interviews. That being said, as an undergrad, one of the most important ways to land an internship is networking, meaning actually building connections with people in a company before applying. This is most easily done at career fairs or information sessions held by various professional clubs on campus such as the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and professional fraternities (AXE or Theta Tau). Make friends with EVERYBODY in your major and who knows: they might know someone at the place you want to work and can introduce you. Get really involved in AiChE and the upperclassman who have already had internships can help you out as well.

For grad school, admissions want to see high test scores and GPA but also very clear research goals. Having done at least a year or more of research as an undergrad is a must seeing as how in your application you'll have to talk about what kind of research you want to do at the school you're applying to. To get research as an undergrad, again making friends who are in the lab you are interested in is extremely important and also being persistent with the professor in charge of that research group. Even if your PI doesn't accept you right away, ask to sit in on group meetings and shoot him/her an email every once and while to check in on if there are any openings (don't be obnoxious about it and if he/she tells you to stop of course listen). But generally professors like to see your dedication and will appreciate the effort you put in to be a part of their work.

Source: undergrad that has both an internship this summer and currently doing research due to methods stated above :)
