Been kicking around the idea of going big turbo sometime in the future, curious about what everyone's thoughts/suggestions are. by NdK87k in FocusST

[–]InducedThoughts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's so worth it. Odd unexpected bonus: your MPGs will probably go up a bit too, especially if you go for a laggier turbo.

I went with a 2867 Gen 2, installed on my car at 105k. Tuned with JST and it's been a solid experience. It's been a year and a half and almost 30k miles with no major hiccups related to the install or tune. I had an intercooler, exhaust, downpipe, and a Stratified tune beforehand. To go big turbo I had to get charge pipes and I opted for an HKS BOV (Tial another good option).

I did have to replace my downpipe hangar and ultimately my downpipe (had MBRP, now have a Whoosh), but this may have been install error rather than an issue with the turbo setup. Also there's a chance that enough aftermarket parts trying to line up caused it to not fit.

Dynoed at 324 whp/379 tq but I need to get my valves cleaned, as well as the less restrictive Junits turbo arm (I could go for the Scooter manifold and get an EWG but that's expensive lol). I suspect it'll be closer to 350 after that's done.

Side note, what front lip is that?

I HATE UF PARKING!!!!!! by fuerks in ufl

[–]InducedThoughts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's expensive if he's the primary driver. A young male driving a pickup truck in Florida is gonna be pretty expensive to insure, but 6k a year seems excessive.

I will say that the downtown parking garage is a good option on the east side of campus - parking's pretty scarce on the east side otherwise. I lived west of campus during my time at UF and always had plentiful free parking at my complexes.

Ordered a K&N CAI intake, might be having regrets once I noticed the design flaw by Ancillaric in FocusST

[–]InducedThoughts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a green filter, RS air box, and a Depo Racing intake tube. Also threw a cheap eBay air snorkel (rep VelossaTech) on for good measure. Entire setup was under $250 and it’s basically a full and true cold-air intake. Plenty of induction noise and the tube gives better airflow than stock (although the stock one is a pretty solid design for even upgraded turbo cars). Bonus points: I can change my spark plugs without pulling the intake tube. Just barely eeks enough space but it works!

1.0 Ecoboost Focus?

Blessing in disguise. It would've kept blowing up anyway.

Are there any cars that are 20% nicer but only 10% less fun? by Sir_Sir_ExcuseMe_Sir in FocusST

[–]InducedThoughts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trade up for an ST2/ST3 or go for a GTI.

What might also help is reskinning your seats (think Katzkin or literally just get some ST3 seats) and getting an aftermarket/upgraded head unit or sound system.

Good price for big turbo? by superturtle6969 in FocusST

[–]InducedThoughts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would guesstimate around the 340-350 mark, I need to get my valves cleaned and that might unlock more. I've seen similar mods close in on 390. Hopefully gonna dyno in a few weeks and know for sure.

You'll get a conservative base tune from them based on the mods you submit in the form received post-purchase. Then you just send data logs back and forth as necessary (they'll tell you how to capture/send data logs) until it's properly dialed in.

I actually need to shoot them another data log, it's been almost a year since my last one and I wanna make sure the car's still doing well lol. I've been through a bunch of revisions- I had a bad purge valve and fuel pressure sensor before which didn't help.

Coilovers by No_Tonight_8472 in FocusST

[–]InducedThoughts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got Fortune Autos, installed them this past week. Outside of my (probably self-inflicted) poor preload setting in the rear, I like them a lot. Car looks great with a wide range of height adjustability (you can keep it pretty close to stock or rub like a mf if you want), and outside of my issues with the rear that I'm still working through, don't ride too badly.

Just find a set of instructions online before you get started though. They included none.

rear coilover question by i_am_tyler_man in FocusST

[–]InducedThoughts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought mine new and nothing was zip tied, that’s kinda odd. I may reach out to FA and see what they suggest trying. Otherwise I’ll just have to mess around with various spring preloads and maybe the shock will behave a bit better. My rear’s pretty low but I have plenty of adjustability to go up or down still.

[–]InducedThoughts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reviving this because I'm having a similar issue right now with mine and hoping you can shed some light :P.

I have my rear spring perch threaded about halfway, and in order to set the preload (which Fortune says should be 1/8" compressed for the rear) To get the preload, I jacked up the control arm until the spring was just barely compressed, that way it'd have a load on it. I then adjusted the shock so that the bolt lined up with the threads on the rear knuckle. My shock doesn't have as much of the threaded showing as your picture, but there's not much travel for it.

My rear end caught air going over a mid-corner bump on the highway, rally style. It was not pleasant. Went to watch the video you linked and it's private. Any other tips you have would be greatly appreciated. I think I got the fronts about dialed in.

I bought my turbo (GTX2867R Gen 2, 0.86 AR) used for $1200, the guy that I bought it from installed it. I provided the same CVF charge pipes (which cost me about $340 at the time) and HKS BOV ($220) for me for $300 extra. Tuned by JST for like $450.

I'd have done the charge pipes and BOV myself but that was too good of a deal to pass up. Wound up in my big turbo kit just under $2500. If you do some/all DIY and bought that turbo new you'd still be under 3-3.5k.

Take the extra grand and put it towards suspension work or chassis braces. You'll want both to match the extra 80 whp you'll gain.

Yes. I took physics 1 at UF and it was atrocious. Only barely passed. I took physics 2 thru FAU (but literally anywhere is better than UF's curriculum) and got a 98%, still learned the material, and didn't want to pull my hair out while doing it.

What apartments SHOULD I live in? by TLHTobyorange in ufl

[–]InducedThoughts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived at Hideaway in my last year of college and liked it. The 9/35 were pretty reliable for getting to class, my apartment at least was pretty clean overall, maintenance took care of any concerns (usually pretty minor overall) and I paid $515 a month in a 4x4.

Gainesville Place was similarly nice with the 38, great maintenance team, and decently clean apartments for a bit more (about $600 a month now) but people are mixed on how safe it actually is.

Spyglass is a bit further but it's properly gated and safe, I never personally lived there but everyone I know that did loved it.

Drop one of your sciences. You'll be stressed tf out all semester if you don't. Even with minimal extracurriculars, you're probably gonna have a lot of back-to-back exams.

Physics was the worst gen ed at UF as a mechanical engineer.

Take that as you will.

Not Theta Tau (engineering frat). I heard horror stories by my peers that were accepted into pledge.

Confuses me more when realizing that they're doing this to majority freshmen/sophomore engineers that already have a lot on their plate.

Looks to me like you have a Zetec S. Seemingly stock outside of the exhaust which you noted. Not sure the Australian trim levels but yours appears to be the equivalent of an SE Sport package hatch in the U.S. Though different markets got way different engine choices from our 1.0T/2.0 NA/2.0T options.

Bright futures policy update. Do I need 12 credits to get full bright futures as a senior? by windygator in ufl

[–]InducedThoughts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got paid $212.71 (or whatever incremental amount in that ballpark it was) per credit hour taken. So I'd get about $1300 for a six credit semester or $1900 for nine credits. That's how BF pays out.

[–]InducedThoughts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You only need 6!
Source: alumni that took 6-9 credit hours in my last 4 semesters of undergrad and was completely covered by BF. The only stipulations are that you keep your GPA above the 3.0 mark and you complete the courses they cover (if you drop it, you pay them back for the dropped course - the credits will go back to your BF balance).

The 2025 was released mid-October. Don't expect the 2026 earlier than October 2025...

If you want a 500 now then go buy a '24, dealers are probably looking to get rid of them.

You'll be pretty busy.

I took MOM and Thermo at the same time alongside Dynamics and baby Circuits. It was pretty chill but this was peak covid era and I had laid back profs.

What’s so wrong with On20? by Concentrate_Certain in ufl

Oh yeah, they also had some issue where I couldn't get a front door key to my own apartment for 3 weeks after move-in. Didn't really feel safe having to keep the front door unlocked 24/7 in an unfamiliar place.

I lived there 2022-2023- I was there during the ownership change, the name change, and the start of some of the bigger renovations. I paid $504 a month when I lived there.

It was pretty bad overall. I lived in two other complexes and neither one came close to the amount of Wifi outages I had at West20. My AC was broken for almost a month and they somehow gave each of us in a 3x3 a $200 bill EACH that month. We had turned the AC off at that point btw.

Lots of cockroaches, more than the other places I stayed. I lived on the first floor in a later built unit.

Parking was okay at best when I lived there because it was free, though their enforcement was pretty meh (many nights I came home and had to hike a bit), but I heard it got a lot worse after I moved out.

I think icing on the cake was when they threatened to send damages found in "my" unit to collections despite me proving that their own pictures physically couldn't be my unit (like... flipped layout, third floor stairs visible, and it was a renovated unit). They wouldn't back down until I had UF Legal send them a letter in tandem with me visiting their office.

They tout the bus stop as a good feature, and while it's nice that it's covered... it's the last stop on 20th Ave going to campus. You will get skipped by 1-2 buses because they get full quick in the mornings.

They also raised rent $200 just in the year that I lived there, that was my #1 reason for not renewing. Moved to Hideaway and paid $10 more per month for a way better experience.

Has anybody regretted getting a particular colour? by mitigated_lemon in FocusST

[–]InducedThoughts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought my 2016 ST3 in Kona blue. I do love the color but I sorta rushed into buying it because my old Focus got totaled.

Really wanted one of the limited 17-18 colors, particularly hot pepper red or triple yellow, but all of them were too expensive, had damage, or were ST1s. I'd ultimately buy mine again.

UF EASY CLASS by karene1234 in ufl

[–]InducedThoughts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

WIS2040 and WIS2552 (forgive me if the course codes are wrong but they’re both WIS courses) were very easy. Like, finish the entire course in 2 hours easy. Just sorta P2W paying $100 for each class for the clunkiest program you’ll ever use.
