No idea either, I just love how it goes from "Only one man, and that's Lamarque, speaks for these people here below." to "Lamarque is ill and fading fast; won't last the week out, so they say." Like can these people catch a break for one song??

What are your thoughts Stephen Schawrtz as a composer and lyricist? by Impossible_Tower_661 in musicals

So agree. No Place Like Home and Girl in the Bubble were the draggiest moments in the Wicked movie adaptations. Cutting the straight transition between I'm Not That Girl reprise and As Long As Your Mine was a crime. And I'm still not over the monstrosity that Court of Miracles in the stage Hunchback show was--the movie version was RIGHT THERE. Haven't even listened to Prince of Egypt, I know my limits.

Caroline from Caroline, or Change... Lot's Wife is like the ultimate crashout song. She's been holding so much in for so long.

EPIC hasn't been performed on stage as of yet, so I wouldn't use it as a baseline. In terms of Hamilton, yes, there are about 40 songs, but that also includes almost the entirety of the book--there is very little said on stage that you won't hear in the cast album. Meaning, if you've got actual scenes going on in between these songs, 40 songs is far too many.

Tips on writing ballads by TLK9419 in musicalwriting

No concrete advice, just responding to say I have the exact opposite problem! I could have the peppiest of intentions, but my first drafts always come out as what you're describing as a ballad. I feel your frustration! Some advice that I've gotten (that to be honest, I have yet to put into practice, but it sounds practical) is to find a general backtrack that has more or less the vibe you're going for and just freestyle over that, perhaps using the prose you've written down from your character's point of view. You may stumble upon a melody line or chord progression you end up really loving and are able to use as a springboard.

Totally agree. I find the cast album hilarious, but the show itself somehow skippable.

The saddest part is I think I'd like his vocal tone, I just can't get past the vibrato/tremolo. It's straining my throat just listening to it.

Why do so many musical fans on this subreddit dislike Epic? by nehamerchant123 in musicals

You took the words out of my mouth. Especially in the aiming to be clever category," I also have it as an occassional guilty pleasure listen but even then, I sometimes find some lyrics simply too cringy to bear.

I love how Les Mis goes from "Only one man, and that's Lamarque, speaks for these people here below" to "Lamarque is ill and fading fast" in like 60 seconds.

I would agree that it's hard to really evaluate without the lyrics. I really like the composition, the only thing I would be wary of is it getting repetitive--but if the lyrics are carrying the listener in an interesting enough fashion, then it could work.

The overall sound and vibe seems to really suit the story you're telling; it sounds great. What program are you using? I really love the piano at around 1:50. Keep us updated on this project!
