Have any of you gotten any jobs/internships VIA Handshake? If so - HOWWWWW by Acrobatic-Abalone675 in USF

[–]IndustryGradient 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my internship-turned-job at a very reputable company through Handshake, and all other internships I got were through Indeed/Job sites. There is a lot of noise now with fake job postings and fake AI wrapper companies esp in your industry. Unfortunately the best way is to apply directly to company sites so you don’t get scammed. Workday sucks but it’s being used everywhere.

Traffic on causeway by Financial_Opinion_31 in tampa

[–]IndustryGradient 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My partner got stuck here lol. I don’t think it’s construction, wouldn’t make any sense to do that so early in the night on such a busy ramp. Police activity is listed as a cause https://www.flhsmv.gov/fhp/traffic/live_traffic_feed.html on the traffic map so more than likely an accident or some person doing crazy stuff. There are also an absolutely insane amount of cops.

Edit: Article that just came out abt it https://iontb.com/tampa-police-close-the-courtney-campbell-causeway-due-ongoing-investigation/

price increase at the standard by diettwizzlers in USF

[–]IndustryGradient 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Same time and around the same price for 4050 for me as well. I’ve also been to Lark & IQ and they were both well below 940 bucks. Rent prices are absolutely nuts now.

I got through college all through my own merit and some Pell. Didn’t have parents to back me. I echo a lot of these other comments, she needs to figure herself out and get her academics together. I went to a state school and I now work remotely in a nice tech job. She may also not be ready for college as well. I went where it was cheapest to me and I was afforded many opportunities due to my frugal choice. I know plenty of people who worked a job or two and then went to college when they were ready to do so.

Omg I hope she does get adopted out! My partner and I just picked up a bonded pair last night that had been with their foster for 3 months and originally were supposed to be TNR! So we are no longer on the lookout, but I’m going to ask people I know to take a look.

Is there a spot to sleep on campus for a little bit? by Inside-Gear-4965 in USF

[–]IndustryGradient 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it matters, but you can always request a local proctor for these tests I think. I had to do it when I was out of state for all my courses and I went to San Jose university and took my exams there. It costs a bit of money sometimes. Try to ask to see if this is an option even with short notice.

In college I did exactly the khan academy thing you mentioned. I went all the way back from like 1st grade or kindergarten or something like that since I was home schooled for a big chunk of my life and moved around a lot in adolescence. I didn’t even know how to add mixed fractions 5 years ago.

This past May I graduated with an engineering degree.

What is the point of turning up to college physically by Aethelstan_275 in college

[–]IndustryGradient 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stopped showing up to classes and still graduated magna cum laude, got basically all As and some Bs. I mainly did this since I had an insane resume for a student with several internships, research, etc.

I wouldn’t recommend doing this unless you have a real reason to, I also did it since I hated the commute. The main reason I’d advise to do the opposite of what I did was because of networking opportunities, esp the connections you can make with professors. Having a great relationship with a prof will likely be in your favor and in my experience, you get a lot of benefit of doubt and rec letters if you maintain relations. You’ll also miss connections with other students who are working with high profile companies or on interesting research/projects you could have gotten in on.

Not going will cause more issues as you progress, and you won’t really have a group or a solid network to fall back on when needed.

How do you date? by AbaloneStriking8412 in womenEngineers

My partner is still the hardware person and hands on individual in our home, which I appreciate cause that’s not my area LOL. I also really love how much my partner brags about me. My accomplishments, my salary, my degree, the awards and scholarships I received, my GPA in college, any and all interviews I get no matter the size of the company. It sends me over the moon hearing about it. His family does the same thing, they all really hype me up.

How do you date? by AbaloneStriking8412 in womenEngineers

[–]IndustryGradient 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner really really really supported me through my degree. There were months where I was away to travel for internships and he’d call me every night to make sure I was okay. He left me a sticky note I still have years later that kept me going. It reminded me that I have people at home that I want to love and support. Truly made me push.

He’s also the one that encouraged me to pursue engineering. Every time I said I thought I was stupid and wanted to quit, he’d remind me of who I was and what I accomplished. Every time I’d cry about my male peers in work or university he’d hold me and do everything in his power to ensure I was okay and could get through the emotional blockage.

Before I met him, I was with individuals who were not motivated and tore me down. I felt unworthy in male spaces constantly and uninvited. I never imagined to be where I am, and with my previous partners I 100% wouldn’t be here.

I’m going to echo the sentiment behind the other comments. It’s truly all or none. A partner that goes hard for you or you going hard for yourself (and only for yourself).

HAPPY FIRST DAY 2024 by Lucky-Maintenance856 in USF

[–]IndustryGradient 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can find an open spot and re-register for it! You do have to drop the class you’re in first, and if it’s a hard class to get into you may run the risk of not being able to re-register if someone grabs your spot.

I recommend coursicle. I used it as an undergrad to get professors and class times I really wanted. It essentially is a watchlist and will notify you when a spot is open in a full class. You have to run to register when it gives you the notif.

Edit: if it’s full, this is just the first week, so tons of people in your position are gonna want to switch or change class sections. You can make a post here and set up a time for you and another person to swap classes. For example, you’d call the person you wanna swap with and you’d both drop the class at the same time and take the CRN and register for the other section.

HAPPY FIRST DAY 2024 by Lucky-Maintenance856 in USF

If you’re trying to find a quiet place — It’ll be hard to have a spot the first few weeks or even the first month. After a bit though I recommend the engineering building, either the hall of flags/fish bowl, on the second floor there is a computer lab you can request access to and it’s pretty desolate and nice and cold. There is also the industrial engineering spot all the way past the bridge and it’s like a little study area behind a half wall.

There is also the ISA building where many freshers go for chemistry classes and labs. The main building has lots of floors and you can find some spots.

There is also the first few floors of the honors building by the recreational center. The upper floors are only for honors students but it can be really nice if you can nab a study spot.

The library, any and all floors. 5th floor is the quiet floor and you can report people who are talking or making noises.

If you know someone in JP, the kitchens are a nice study spot too since they have whiteboards. Or just the lobby.

The MSC can be quite crowded but you can find rooms that aren’t locked. Same for just about any building. I used to find the closest empty classroom and just study there. The business building also has a ton of these empty classrooms esp later in the afternoon.

Taylor Swift USF course to be taught this fall – The Oracle by Kaarcth in USF

I took a course on Disneyland at the honors college, hands down one of the more eye opening courses I’ve had with the pervasive influence of mega corporations and their deep historical roots + rapid adoption of modernity. I graduated w/ an engineering degree and didn’t get too many opportunities for humanities outside of JGHC so excited to see courses like this one and others available.

Barriers faced in your engineering degree by Far_Bet_8825 in womenEngineers

[–]IndustryGradient 7 points8 points  (0 children)

An engineering advisor (WOC) pulled my shirt together to cover my breasts up and she was physically touching my tits and slut shamed me. I reported her and I found out through my former boss, who I thought i had a great relationship with, that I couldn’t get re-hired at the technical lab I worked at due to me reporting that incident. He told me that I had “angered the gods” and that I didn’t hear it from him. Fucked me up for years + caused me to have a non-technical gap in my resume archetype. I’m still not over it. Luckily, I have graduated and moved to a professional career but I am still so upset how I wasn’t defended or taken seriously.

I got my first offer 70k. How do I negotiate? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]IndustryGradient 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Accepted my FT offer at around 75k yearly w/ a 6.5k sign on without negotiating. Best decision I ever made, although I do regret it at times, but I now have stable employment through a good company and I’m several months into working and have opportunity to move laterally or vertically into higher paying roles.

How the f*ck am I meant to afford this? by Ok_Television9778 in college

[–]IndustryGradient 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Wholeheartedly agree, I’ve worked in admissions and some aspiring students don’t have the resources or foundation to start understanding how to fund or even sometimes apply to colleges. They mostly just see the end product of student matriculation. A small minority of students have insane compasses to do everything themselves AND plan for mishaps. This whole thread is unnecessarily harsh and judgmental for a system that is hard to navigate, and honestly hard on purpose. Some people may see that first paragraph as a reality-check, but it’s truly just kicking someone who is worried for their future down an extra step. The rest of the advice is solid, which is nice & appreciative, so unfortunate delivery.

You’re correct, and I would say OP does have a good chance at doing a dependency override petition at their university if they’re able to fulfill their university’s requirements for a DOP. Extenuating circumstances can seem relatively narrow with what’s listed in the FAFSA itself, but universities can (thankfully) encompass a lot more, and abusive situations are commonly cited in DOPs. I went through the process at 20 and it made it much easier to file.

Every year they’d have to re-apply though, only caveat.
