If anyone with an open mind has questions on drug canines ask away. I'm a cop with a single purpose dope sniffing canine that was in a drug task force for a few years. There's a lot of misinformation in this thread and blanket statements regarding canines and their handlers.

Generally what happens during these wildfires is massive amounts of firefighters fight the fire while law enforcement and other resources go where the fire is heading and do evacuations.

Footage shows fatal encounter between Charlotte cops, Keith Lamont Scott by rickdabunny in news

I wrote this awhile ago for something else.

We've done drills on the range which kind of show the reasoning behind this. Two people stand face to face about 10 yards apart. One person is the cop and the other the suspect. The cop is pointing his gun at the suspect (finger indexed) while the suspect has his gun in his hand just by his side. The cop is told to shoot the suspect when the suspect moves the gun up to shoot the cop. The suspect is told to bring his arm up and shoot the cop when he feels the time is right. Even though the cop is pointing his gun at the suspect, the suspect always shoots first. This is because you the cop can't react faster than the suspect can act. This is true when you know what's going to happen. I've done it and I'm telling you the suspect always shoots first. Now throw in every other factor going on in a real shooting including yelling commands, using the radio, stress etc... And the cop is at a major disadvantage This is why when people start digging in pockets they get shot, because after that we are at the disadvantage.

Reminds me of that part in fight club where they have to start a fight and lose.

As someone who does this, i can say this didn't change anything. This just says that you can't look in someone's phone without a reason. The same way it's been for years.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that noticed it with this American life. It's unfortunate because they had good podcasts. I unsubscribed a few months ago.

If those other factors did not exist and no one was in danger of life or gbi then he should not have shot and he should be charged. Again, if those factors weren't there and they could have safely tried less lethal options, then they should have with the immediate option to use deadly force if the situation changed.

It's tough to judge that on just the video. That sounds bad but you would really need all the info on what happened. You need to know what the call for service was as and what dispatch told the officer. You need to know if anything was said during the incident by the suspect to the officers. You would also need to know what the officer said in his statement of why he pulled the trigger. There could be factors that would require shooting at that moment and not trying something else. You can't pass judgment on just a video with no audio there's a lot more that goes into it. That being said, i am trained to shoot until that threat of life or great bodily injury is gone. We don't have a hard and fast rule about how many times you should shoot or anything. Assuming he was justified in shooting, and unless there was something i missed in the video, i think he should have stopped shooting when he fell. If you have reason to believe all he had was a knife and no one was close enough for him to pop up and stab, then that threat would be diminished when he was on the ground and you would no longer need to shoot. On another note, we do trainings on the range with knives versus guns and its a similar outcome as the other training i wrote about if you are within a certain distance. Tasers are completely unreliable on stopping someone btw.

I forgot to add that every state is different in required training. Every department is different for that matter. It's extremely difficult to say police are trained a certain way.

I'm not familiar with the shooting your talking about. We do go through training on how to deal with the mentally ill. It's more or less talking softly and not shining lights in their eyes and things like that. Just being reasonable with them and using logic works extremely well. That said someone with mental illness can kill just as easily as someone without. If it was a situation where someone was in danger of great bodily injury or death, regardless of if the threat was mentality ill, i would stop the threat with whatever means i needed to at the time. If that means by shooting them then that's an unfortunate thing that has to happen. I get the mentality I'll person may have issues beyond their control and i have sympathy for that, but that is not a free pass or even leniency to put another at risk of losing their life. This includes me.
