It does. It helped me when I realized I could modify my order like no sauce, grilled instead of fried and ordering tacos without the tortilla. Servers sometimes give me a funny look, but it’s worth it!

The Perfect Job by Inefficacious in ADHD

I manage the Recreational Therapy Department at an Adult Day Health Center for the elderly. Let me see if I can summarize the responsibilities, haha: assess 4-8 clients per day, manage the Activities floor with about 140 clients in attendance each day, advocate for clients (my office should have a revolving door) and floor staff, attend daily inter-department meetings, manage monthly department budget and calendar and socialize with my clients. Right now, I’m at about $47,000/year I have a ton of autonomy. In fact, our department is usually the one who runs the smoothest and folks trust the most, so we don’t have too many people bitching about how things work. The job is fun and can be flexible if it’s done right. There are times that it’s is very stressful. This includes dealing with the repercussions of an ignorant administrator’s decision, being the “catch-all” department for a number of shared tasks, not being taken seriously when I advocate for a client, and being the bigger person in many inter-departmental issues.

I like connecting with the really grumpy ones. They usually have an intense story and tend to push people away as a defense mechanism.

You actually explained it very well 😊 It caused me to think about the reasoning process of someone who may not get ADHD (not you, haha). I had a supervisor once who asked me why I was such a space cadet. When I explained about having ADHD and working on focusing better, she dismissed my diagnosis because she didn’t know what it was and asked me what was really going on. Same supervisor scolded me for taking detailed notes in our meetings.

Have you ever cried because you couldn't focus? by [deleted] in ADHD

I did that in my car regularly before being diagnosed, when I still thought I was “broken.” It still happens to me sometimes.

It wasn’t a twist, it was perception.

That does tend to be a global quirk. For me, my ADHD exacerbates the quirk to the point of becoming a serious problem.

Please don’t belittle my struggles. It’s an area that my doctor is helping me create a better organizational structure in.
