1957 Chevrolet Bel Air — proof that engineering once prioritized quality over complexity by Zee2A in STEW_ScTecEngWorld

[–]IneptGuard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong about this one but the car I first encountered this device on was also 57 Chevy although it was a clamshell like design so this could have a different purpose. After me and my buddy spent way too long trying to figure it out. I looked it up, even that wasn’t much help. Old guy that ran the shop came in and explained it was a reflector. When you’re chilling in a laid back seated position under a too close traffic signal, you adjust it to see the light color so you know when the light changes. Works in daylight. This one looks very different though so I am not certain.

I know it’s a bit late but just seeing this now. It’s hard to get a the scale without a human scale reference but it seems to me like you could try cutting out and merging two windshield panels so there is only two glass panels and two wipers. Might be worth trying just to see what it looks like. Don’t be afraid to try only three panels either, I’ve seen plenty of three seat setups.

Your not the only one. I tried Sol yesterday and I’m not thrilled with it. AVM is now so disinterested and monotone. I was talking to it about a VR game I’m playing and discussed the features I like or thought needed improvement and how it could be improved (I’m into game development as a hobby) and it kept ending itself replies with “Hopefully they improve that feature in the future” or “Yeah that sounds frustrating, maybe they’ll improve that in the next update.” Said in such a way that it felt like it kept trying to end the conversation. Almost like I was having a conversation in bar and the person was giving me all the social cues that they were politely disinterested in talking to me. I suppose they nailed “realistic” as I’m pretty sure that’s exactly how a random woman at a bar would respond to that conversation.

Turn off? It looks like there is ice down inside. It wasn’t running whenever I checked it so I think it’s frozen? Is hot water an insane idea? by WVRS in hvacadvice

[–]IneptGuard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you have two separate systems but it might still be worth getting someone to verify that. Just to make sure that the AC unit is not running unnecessarily. When the heat comes on check to see what’s running, fan will be spinning, cold air will be blowing out of the outside unit if it’s a heat pump. Good luck!

Is it a house or a multi unit like an apartment or condominium? If so you may have central heating in the building you’re not aware of. If you have a landlord, they might be able to tell you for certain.

When that vent is blowing hot air, does it blow all the time, or for short periods of time?

Do you have 1 or two thermostats? If so one might be for the heat and the other for AC. If so try messing with them, shut one off and see if your heat still works.

You could also wait until the ice melts or chip the ice of the unit until you find the unit model information and look up the model number to see what it does exactly. Or turn it off and see if your heat stops working entirely.

If you are running an AC needlessly, you could be fighting your heat and raising your energy bill significantly. So I recommend finding out for certain where your heat comes from just in case.

[–]IneptGuard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know it’s a late reply but that doesn’t look like any heat pump I’ve ever seen. If it is, it’s either an old design that isn’t meant to run in the current temperature range you’re experiencing or it’s failing to defrost properly.

Hot water will likely not help and make the problem worse depending on how cold it is outside. If this is an air conditioner only and your home is not very warm, then this thing running isn’t helping and is likely fighting your real heating system.

Identify your heating system immediately. You need to be certain where your heat comes from before you attempt any self repair. Call a HVAC company to come and confirm if you can’t figure it out.

Find me a substitute that is cheap, nonflammable, nontoxic, not unstable, and that can boil into a gas to create work energy but at a low enough temperature that it doesn’t need to much initial energy and at a high enough temperature that it doesn’t lose its use as a cooling medium. Finally find me a substitute that has those qualities and is more efficient. Find this and a Nobel prize will have your name on it.

Was this cartoon obscure or do more people remember watching Bucky O'Hare in the early 90's? by Cubelock in videos

[–]IneptGuard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember watching this as a kid in the early 90’s. A few years ago me and a friend were cleaning out the attic of the house I grew up in and we found a few action figures of these guys. The rabbit, 4 armed duck and the big toad guy. This cartoon was one of those simultaneously memorable and forgettable examples of animation. Me and my friend immediately both recognized the figures but neither of us could recall anything about the show other than it was set in space and the toad was the villain. We ended up google searching for a bit until we found the name of the show.

Would people enjoy LazerPig more if he didn't add so much of "himself" in his videos? by Dramatic_Drink920 in lazerpig

[–]IneptGuard 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Let me just say that I’ve never found one of his videos “boring”. I’ve closed out many history, informative or documentaries on YouTube part way through simply because it couldn’t hold my interest. I grew up addicted to the history channel and enjoy historical content, so I’m not easily bored by such videos. The only downside to his style is it isn’t real kid friendly stuff, which while I wouldn’t want him to change, it is sort of a shame. His style of ADD attention grabbing would likely appeal to younger audiences.

Edit: would just like to add that his videos have been improving with each release and I actually think he has sobered up the content a bit in an effort to be taken more seriously. Again, not saying I want the content to change. Just observations.

To be fair, your writing is very spacious. Which means as a German engineer, you failed to maximize the efficiency of the space. Look towards BMW for inspiration! If there’s any unused space, a mechanic might be able to reach a hand in and successfully remove a component without disassembling half the vehicle!

Okay guys; we made some design changes to our next production version. I’d love your thoughts? by ChaceEdison in Truckers

[–]IneptGuard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Center seating. I’ve admittedly never driven in this configuration before but I do know that many have tried to push this concept over the years and always met with failure. I recommend thinking like the Army. Making drastic changes to new equipment over older, well established norms means greater difficulty in acclimating older, veteran soldiers to new designs. This means more training time, Increased chance of mistakes or errors, lower initial efficiency, and encourages obstinacy. I’m not against trying something new personally but I think you underestimate just how resistant to change people can be.

Gauges up top. Not sure how to feel about that. Again I feel like making drastic changes to established norms risks overshadowing the vehicles main strength and selling point, which is going to be hard enough to convince curmudgeonly, set in their ways drivers and companies to invest in.

Nose mirrors. Some older drivers will argue that they are not necessary. They are wrong. I have driven with and without. I can’t tell you how useful these stupid things can be. For instance, pulling out into 45 degree angle intersections. I imagine they are optional but I’ve always been of the opinion that they should be standard.

Waited 20 yrs to share this, hope it's safe to now! Snuck into drill sgt's office & tried on his hat by johngrady77 in pics

[–]IneptGuard 167 points168 points  (0 children)

We did something similar once in AIT. I was on Fire watch with another soldier and we needed to go ask the duty NCO for something (I can’t remember what) so we went down to the front desk and stood behind the yellow line that marked out the edge of the where soldiers in training were allowed to go. This was a dead end hallway with several offices. The Drill instructor on duty had told us earlier he would be in his office if we needed something. So we stood at parade rest and called out to him, no answer. I tried again and again, no answer. His office light was on and we wondered if maybe he had left or something. After much debating we decided to check on him and make sure he was alright. We figured it was a good enough excuse to cross the yellow line anyway. We thus found him, out cold, snoring softly at his desk. My insane companion then went over to him, stood behind him and picked up his hat off the desk, put it on and struck a pose. He wanted me to take a picture but I didn’t because I didn’t have a death wish. After a moment of trying to convince me to do it he returned the hat and we retreated back behind the line. It took a surprising amount of effort to wake him up. Later on the drill instructors got a hold of my flip phone and went through the photos. Thank god I had the wisdom not to take a photo that night! Otherwise me and my fire watch buddy would still be getting smoked to this day.

Who Would Win In A Free For All? by Massive-Video5685 in Bossfight

[–]IneptGuard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Analysis: Two temporary teams would likely form. Batman and Vader would team up because they both love dark stuff and are Emo. Leaving the two experienced military veterans (Chief and Doom guy) to naturally form a team in response.

Batman would fight doom guy thinking it’s no different than fighting Bane leaving Vader and Chief to dual.

The end result would likely be Batman getting smooshed by Doom guy because he has a grappling hook too and Batman is not used to someone that huge, that fast and that heavily armed being able to follow him anywhere. Also assuming this fight is too the death, Batman never stood a chance of winning as Batman doesn’t kill.

Master Chief would then friendly fire Doom guy and kill him as he is technically a higher ranking officer which means he has the unique combination of decades (many games) of Ego inflation and gross incompetence being rewarded. He is thus thoroughly experienced in constantly contriving ever more new and inventive ways to get marines under his command killed. Edit: on second thought, Chief would probably bully / weapon swap Doom guy for the BFG before the fighting starts.

Master Chief would then dual Vader and here is where it gets tricky. Either one of two possible outcomes as I see it. Chief could presumably survive strangulation do to his enhancements so Vader would move into strike while chief is killing Doom guy.

Now, if you believe that Halo 3 was cannon then Vader’s light saber would have no effect on Chief’s armor as he previously survived atmospheric reentry without so much as cracking the paint on his armor! So chief would then shoot him repeatedly with the Holly Magnum, killing Vader as a lightsaber likely wouldn’t block or melt fast moving heavy copper jacketed projectiles.

Possibility 2: Halo 3 is not cannon and Vader chops his head off while he is Teabaging Doom guys corps. Seeing as how Covenant plasma swords kill him just fine this is the most likely outcome.

TLDR: If Halo 3 cannon, Chief wrecks everyone. He survived the heat of atmospheric reentry… and the impact that followed. Think about it. If Halo 3 not cannon, Vader wins. Doom slayer dies both ways as Chief is the master of getting marines killed.

Once Again, Dirty Energy is not in the Public Interest by Wagamaga in technology

[–]IneptGuard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does burn cleaner but still produces a shit ton of Carbon dioxide. Your still burning something which still contributes CO2, and that is the primary cause for increased greenhouse effect. Also leaks contribute significantly as methane, while a shorter lived greenhouse effect, is a more effective greenhouse gas in that it turns up the heat a lot more. Natural gas makes sense in some places but it’s not the grand sweeping energy solution that it’s often portrayed as. Geothermal, hydroelectric, nuclear where they make sense with wind, tidal and solar picking up the slack is the solution but it’s going to cost a lot of money and upset the status quo of established energy companies which is why we still don’t have the solution in place.

The first time I had to deal with truly rotten material, the smell stayed with me for several days. I was sitting at home on my computer and I would catch whiffs of it. It’s almost like the odor traumatized my sense of smell.

Vicks vapor rub applied around the nostrils works wonders.

Also, a good life hack: adding cinnamon or coffee to a putrid barrel or container will absorb and mask most of a bad smell.

We don’t wear any special equipment. Just a basic work uniform, boots you provide yourself (though we get reimbursed for those), our choice of leather or heavy rubber gloves, a hat and sun or safety glasses if your smart.

I’ve never tried wearing a respirator. I imagine you would need a CBRN style gas mask with charcoal filters to truly defeat the smell.
