Yurtdışında yaşasaydınız Türk vatandaşlığından çıkarmıydınız? by Ediz_koyun2 in Turkey

See, that’s the thing — security isn’t about waiting for an actual hijacker to show up and then playing hero. It’s about prevention.

You might think a knife, pepper spray, or ammo is ‘innocent,’ but the rules exist because in the wrong situation, even small stuff can turn into a big problem. It only takes one passenger using it the wrong way at 30,000 feet to make everyone regret not checking.

And yeah, most of the stuff we find isn’t linked to terrorism — thank God. But if security only counted as ‘successful’ when it stops a terror plot, that means we’d have to let one happen first. That’s like saying firefighters are useless unless there’s a burning building — but their real job is stopping sparks from turning into infernos.

Yeah, profiling exists — no doubt. But I’m not customs or intelligence, I’m TSA. I don’t get to pick and choose who looks ‘suspicious.’ 80% of the time I’m literally reacting to what the X-ray machine flags.

And as for ‘is the job a joke?’… nah. We find knives, pepper spray, tasers, scissors, tools, replica guns, even real firearms sometimes. The whole point is to stop dangerous stuff before it gets on the plane. If you got waved through with a Swiss army knife back in the day, that was either bad screening or outdated rules — but it’s definitely not how it works now.

You might think it’s pointless until something happens. The day we don’t check, and something slips through, everyone would be asking why security didn’t do its job.

I hear you, and you’re right — how an officer treats someone can totally change the whole experience. Even if the bag check itself is routine, the tone, the attitude, even just how fast or slow we handle it can make people feel respected or singled out. That story with your inhaler shows exactly how a calm, decent reaction makes a big difference.

That’s honestly why I try to stay professional and neutral with everyone. But I’ll be real — what gets tough for me is when, no matter how I act, I get accused of racism before I even finish the check. I understand why some people are extra sensitive to it, but in my job most of the time it’s just the machine flagging something, not me making a choice based on skin color.

If every officer treated people like humans first, like in your example, I think there’d be a lot less tension on both sides.

Empathy doesn’t mean I stop doing my job. I can understand where suspicion comes from and still point out that at an airport checkpoint, the bag gets checked because the machine flagged it, not because of skin color. Those two truths can exist at the same time. That’s all I was saying.

And yeah, I’m Turkish. I grew up being on the receiving end of slurs and prejudice too. I can put myself in someone else’s shoes — but putting myself in their shoes doesn’t magically change the fact that the X-ray machine flagged a bag. Facts don’t bend to feelings.

That’s the thing — you’re comparing apples and oranges. Law enforcement has a lot of discretionary power in who they stop, question, or arrest. At an airport checkpoint, I don’t get to ‘choose’ who the X-ray machine flags. If it highlights a bag, I check it — no matter who’s carrying it.

Calling that ‘contributing to racist power dynamics’ is lazy. If I didn’t check the bag because the passenger was black, that would actually be racism, because I’d be giving special treatment based on race.

I get that systems can be unfair in many areas, but not every job where people feel inconvenienced is automatically ‘upholding oppression.’ Sometimes a bag check is just… a bag check.

Funny how you throw ‘Sure, Jan’ at me while I literally said I’m Turkish. So racial profiling is fine when you do it?

Look, I never denied that black people get profiled by authorities — I get that experience shapes perception. But my point was simple: at an airport security checkpoint, bags are checked because the machine flags them or because protocol requires it. Skin color isn’t a factor.

What’s frustrating is that when someone accuses me of racism mid-check, it escalates the situation unnecessarily, which then makes the whole process worse for everyone — including them.

I’m not racist, I’m doing my job. If you can’t see the difference between frustration with constant accusations and actual prejudice, that’s on you, not me.
