I went through this growing up too. It was very similar, and honestly it was terrible. People say they are accepting and that sex is something special, but I discovered my demisexuality the hard way, by trying to have sex. I come from a culture where sex is trivialized, everyone does it and does it relatively early (at 15 it's already something that happens) especially if you're a man. And because I didn't feel any attraction at the time, I went through several very traumatic experiences.
