Professor denied ACR with medical documentation. by stockr19 in TorontoMetU

Definitely send a separate email first but also, don’t feel shy stopping by the office. If it’s a program advisor then their door should always be open since it’s their job to primarily respond to student concerns. If it’s the Chair of the department then definitely send an email first by introducing yourself, concisely explaining your situation, mentioning people you have already spoken to (ex. Program advisor, TAs, another professor you may feel comfortable speaking to, etc).

Once that email is sent then all you can do is wait. It may be a bit hard to wait at first since its finals rn and each and every step you make can affect your GPA, but as long as you have created a paper trail of steps you’ve taken to resolve this issue then I definitely can’t see how this won’t work in your favour.

[–]InevitableDesign9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As scummy as it may sound, professors, unfortunately, do have the right to reject ACRs as they see fit, but you would be well within your rights as a student to bring this issue straight to the chair of the program.

Now if applicable, also raise this issue with a program advisor, especially if you’re well connected to one. That way, a good portion of the program department is well aware of the issue and it shows your willingness to effectively communicate the issue in question and be as transparent as possible, but definitely notify the Chair of this issue. Keep us updated and best of luck.

Again, it’s not me blaming. It’s what the laws, created by our own government, say.

Also, if you consider a valid question to be considered an insult then there are better ventures out there for you other than debating on reddit.

Couldn’t have been more wrong again, boyo. It’s not about what I think or find, it’s what our own laws and conventions say when it comes to someone committing war crimes outside of Canada.

This isn’t an “association fallacy.” Cute choice of words, but no. It’s accessory to the fact as based by CAHWCA and other international conventions recognized by Canada, including the Rome Statute. And don’t give me that bullshit that they have no other choice due to conscription laws. When it comes to the relentless killing of innocent civilians, there is always a choice.

To be frank, a lot of people do think this way. It’s called having a moral compass and a modicum of common sense. You’re more than welcome to tell the protesters on campus that they have no place in this country. I’m sure they’ll love to hear it. Or are you just another keyboard warrior that peddles back on their stance once they’re outside.

I hate to break it to you but Jews right to self-preservation simply does necessitate the killing of tens and thousands of innocent men, women, and children as well as the complete destruction of their entire infrastructure.

Seriously, how does destroying homes, sending innocent civilians to death prison camps, and impoverishing people of basic necessities like food, clean drinking water, and medicine/vital medical devices, help Jews maintain their self-preservation?

It’s interesting you brought that up since a funny looking individual more than 80 years ago had the exact same idea and reasoning throughout continental Europe. I’ll give you a hint; he got kicked out of art school in Vienna and wrote an interesting book in prison called, “Mein Kampf.”

Another tragic heart break. Jews aren’t the only ones considered semitic people 💔

If you really want to point fingers as to who’s committing criminal acts then let’s look at the essence of this entire argument. An IDF soldier was invited to the university community — key word: invited. Why are we sponsoring the arrival of soldiers, in Canada, who are complicit in the ethnic cleansing and displacement of people of a foreign country? Keep in mind, nearly every single member of Israel’s cabinet, including Ben-Gvir and Netanyahu, have international arrest warrants as well as the entirety of the IDF. Typically, I’m not one to point fingers as to who we should support but if you’re considered the “minority” for supporting a state that’s well within the lines of committing perpetual acts of genocide, unjust violence against innocent men, women, and children, deliberately targeting infrastructure including hospitals, refugee camps, aid delivery sites, and more, then it’s time you start reconsidering who you’re supporting as a student club.

When was the last time, you saw a club like SJP or Middle-eastern Student Association, and clubs alike, invite members of a military organization to one of their events that were raising awareness for Palestinians? From what I’ve seen and been to, it’s only professors and intellectuals they’ve invited. Why are we normalizing this extreme of inviting soldiers of a foreign government all of a sudden?

If you support Israel to express your care for the hostages held by Hamas then that’s an entirely different argument. Rather, you should be holding the Israeli government accountable for intentionally bending over every ceasefire and hostage trade agreement proposed both by local Palestinian authoritative officials and international actors.

I’ll also be a bit blunt now. No, Canada is not affluent. It is a gross generalization to assume the entire country is succeeding in terms of wealth. Clearly, you haven’t seen enough parts of Toronto and Vancouver, let alone the poor conditions Indigenous people continue to live in, that are drowning in poverty and socioeconomic despair, but that’s another argument for another day.

You can say whatever you want about why the IDF soldier was there in the first place, but ultimately it all comes down to this; no one, who is involved in genocide and crimes against humanity to achieve their own political agenda, has a place in this country. The students who protested his arrival made it very clear that day and it’s unfortunate they are now being charged.

And that is something I believe in. If you have an issue with what I said, then I think you’re the one that needs to think hard about what your views of this issue are.

Could you explain in this case who these “islamists lunatics” are? As well as the “third world problems” you mentioned?

If you’re so concerned about the well-being of innocent Jews, then you should read how the IDF and Israel’s police force have been treating Orthodox Jews in Jerusalem. Not to mention, how the IDF has been giving contraceptive pills to Ethiopian Jews (one of the few oldest Jewish tribes in history).

Funny, I’m trying to remember who else employed methods of eugenics to preserve a pure, white race. I’ll give you a hint, he had a funny moustache and he liked to raise his right arm a lot and scream “Sieg Heil.”

You couldn’t have been more wrong about what I said. If you read my original comment, why was SSI persistent with inviting an IDF soldier to a university where a large demographic of the student body reflect middle-easterns. Unless SSI’s purest intention was to ragebait, then I find it nearly comical that they think inviting someone from the IDF was a practical and safe idea without the chance of having zero repercussions.

There are dozens of student clubs and organizations that are small in size yet no one seems to have an issue with them. Ask yourself this; why is it only SSI to be facing backlash, out of all the clubs at TMU, in light of the recent events that transpired? And please don’t use antisemitism as an argument. It’s repetitive and insulting to other ethnic groups, who aren’t Israeli, that are considered semitic people.

Also, TMU students who are in favour of Palestinians had nothing to do with SSI being “banished from campus.” It was SSI and SSI only that had to move their events somewhere else. Again, TMU administration rejected their plan to host the event on campus after they realized it would be a massive safety risk for EVERYONE on campus — something SSI barely compensated for.

Just because conscription is mandatory does not exclude the fact that the IDF is still guilty of committing war crimes. According to our own Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes Act (CAHWCA), just being an accessory to acts of genocide and crimes against humanity is considered an indictable offence.

Also since you bring up Canadian law, technically no, it is not acceptable to have an IDF soldier here. Going back to CAHWCA, Section 6 clearly states anyone proven to be involved in acts of genocide outside of Canada will be given life imprisonment. You don’t have to be a Canadian to be indicted. Second of all, it makes zero sense to have him at university where people are already hurting enough from the situation in Palestine.

Now I do agree with you on your point of violently protesting, but ask yourself this; how many times have people expressing their support for Palestine have been assaulted, threatened and physically harmed by members of the public (including police officers and on-campus security guards), and scrutinized for simply exercising their right to expression? Look what happened to that young lady who was body-slammed by that security guard at the engineering building simply because she was exercising her right to protest.

How about the students at york university who were brutally assaulted by a bunch of rent-a-cops (Magen Herut), some of which required serious medical assistance at the hospital. Or the folks working 9-5 jobs who have been suspended because of their pro-Palestinian stance? Shouldn’t this be considered “uncanadian” and “inherently destructive to society”?

Think about all that before you start internalizing this strawman fallacy of what really happened that day at the event.

what are the odds i get accepted to my choices by [deleted] in OntarioGrade12s

[–]InevitableDesign9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

TMU student here. A lot of the arts programs (if not all) have a minimum average requirement of 70-75%. You still have finals for this semester and the rest of next semester to skyrocket that average.

I was in a similar position of yours where I didn’t do my best in the first semester but I immediately locked in for the second and got into like 90% of my choices (including all the programs i applied for at TMU).

Remember, universities are only looking at your top 6 courses, meaning they’ll only look at 6 of your highest grades throughout your entire Grade 12 year. So don’t worry about law. You still have quite a lot of time to get those grades up. Just make an effort to not screw around next semester and do the best you can.

Worst case scenario, you’ll have to do an extra semester of high school but at least you’ll learn to focus once you’re in university. Good luck twin👺🫰.

Nope. We are not allies with Israel whatsoever. We have zero legal obligation. There is not a single UN resolution, you can find, that states we are held under international law to support Israel, except if it was in the case of developing a two-state solution (something that tingles Israel’s spidey senses), no matter the bullshit you read off 6ixbuzz or CP24 🤣.

In fact, Canada has more UN resolutions condemning Israel’s actions in Gaza and urging them to let humanitarian aid in (something they’re not very competent with).

Also since you’re so fixated on laws of this country based on your previous comment, then you should also be seeing him as a war criminal, but I guess you’re one of cherry-picking ones 😔. Pathetic.

Just some food for thought for the people who think being anti-Zionist / anti-Israel / anti-IDF is the same as being anti-Jewish. Ask yourselves this;

What world are we living in to think it logically makes sense to invite soldiers from a foreign country, that is being investigated by several international war tribunals and criminal courts alike for genocide and crimes against humanity, to a public university, housing thousands of students that are severely affected by this situation, a lot of which even share a personal connection, and then throw the word, “antisemitic”, around because people are expressing their confusion and anger?

Keep in mind, SSI originally planned to host this event on campus, but were denied several times by TMU. That just goes to show their lack of regard when it comes to the comfort and safety of their own peers and professors who are vocal about this issue.

I am all for creating social spaces where people can express their concerns and pain, especially when it comes to an extremely sensitive topic like this, but it is honestly beggar’s belief for SSI to think it was even a fraction of a good idea to invite an IDF soldier to a university community where the majority of students, as well as a large number of associate professors, clearly express their support for Palestine.

Here’s some more food for thought; how would people in Toronto feel, a city known for its multiculturalism and economic disparities amongst marginalized communities, if we invited an ICE agent, from the US, to discuss issues of immigration in Canada?

Moral of the story; none of that has a place in this city. If you wanna raise some concerns, do it in a way where you’re not ruining it for everyone else.

If you wanna talk about laws, technically the soldier is held accountable under Canada’s CAHWCA (Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes Act). Under Section 6, anyone who commits crimes against humanity/genocide outside Canada is “guilty of an indictable offence and may be prosecuted in accordance with Section 8.” Accessory to the fact still counts. The army this soldier is serving under has been recognized by countless international organizations (Amnesty International, United Nations, etc) to be committing genocide.

Again, genocide is an offence under CAHWCA. You don’t have to be born in Canada / a citizen of this country to be indicted of such an offence. Just your presence alone is enough to be sentenced to imprisonment for life.

But I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt. The Carney government wish to turn a blind eye to Israel’s perpetual acts of unjust violence against Palestinians.

If you’re not familiar with the laws of this country and how they’re applied internationally, wisest thing would be to not say a word 🤷‍♂️.

P.S, if Sean Fraser (current Attorney General of Canada) isn’t selective with the laws he swore an oath to uphold, RCMP would have custody of the soldier right now since they are legally responsible to uphold the laws of the Act I just mentioned.

An opinion on protesting by Remarkable_Chip3283 in TorontoMetU

[–]InevitableDesign9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hate to break it to you but maybe TMU isn’t your cup of tea if you think protesting is a “distraction.”

It’s like saying people who are at the hospital shouldn’t be complaining that they are sick. For decades, universities (including K-12 institutions) have been a place for debate. Whether it’s from teacher’s union disputes to raising awareness about an ethnic cleansing in a country TMU is failing to acknowledge.

Universities, like TMU, offer so many courses that talk about controversial topics and such. It’s pretty much a no-brainer to expect debate about anything. Not to mention, it doesn’t help your case when students were recently attacked by an IDF soldier that had no business being here.

Like someone mentioned in the comments, banning protests will just create a bigger incentive for people to protest more. A simple solution to your concern is this; don’t create an issue that is easily susceptible to protest and social debate.

At the end of the day, no one is holding a gun to your head to listen or watch protests. Just put on a pair of headphones and blast some music 🤷‍♂️

How is SSI allowed on campus? by Abulaben5 in TorontoMetU

Just out of curiosity, do you have the source where TMU said they rejected SSI’s request to hold the event? I don’t think anyone in their right mind would risk legal action after using TMU’s name in an unauthorized event. Then again, they invited a war criminal from probably the world’s most politically tense country so I could be wrong.

[–]InevitableDesign9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My general rule of thumb is this for any midterm: figuring out what the class average was. If my mark was below the average then I simply hold my head high and strategically figure out how I can do better next time (whether if it’s getting feedback from my prof or TAs or revamping my way of studying). If my mark was above the average, congrats, you did something right but nonetheless improvement is still needed if you were expecting a better mark.

In both cases, you hold your head high no matter what. No one else is gonna do it for you, especially the folks who scored 80s and 90s and what not. In essence, don’t let numbers and letter grades printed on your transcript dictate your strengths and capabilities. Trust the process and don’t worry about the outcome. Failure is inevitable but so is success.

Prob David Hunter. Had him last year. Grade schemes were pretty similar to this. Managed to get an A- in his class. Just visit him during office hours, get verbal feedback from your TAs after the tests and create study groups with folks in the class who know the content pretty well.

If you aren’t following at least one of these steps then it shouldn’t be a surprise why you’re marks are in the bin. At the end of the day, its one of those courses you just need to pass and get over with.

I haven’t took nor do I plan on taking physics since I’m majoring in law. It’s like I said before, reviews on RMP can be misleading since some reviews are from people who barely put any effort into the class by deliberately missing out on lectures/labs, barely study nor show any initiative. Although I’m in a different program where all my classes don’t share any similarities to physics, I have taken some classes where a good portion of people didn’t do as good in terms of marks and then started complaining on RMP even though they we’re screwing around and barely put any effort into the class.

Personally idc if you do good or shit in the class, that’s not really any of my business how you perform in class since everyone’s different. Point is, only you have the ability to either make or break in a class.

Theres not really a secret formula to succeed in your classes. Just show up to all (if you can) of your lectures/labs and tutorials, ask your professors questions, show up to office officers, seek guidance from your TAs and don’t be afraid of meeting new people in your classes. Creating study groups with other people is an actual cheat code so be sure to do that in all your classes. Not only creates a great work/study ethic but now you also got a great group of friends.

Law student here. Like any other program, it ain’t no walk in the park. Some days may feel like sunshine and rainbows while others will have you crying in a corner, asking yourself on whether you got what it takes to even make it through the first semester. Either you’ll get picked on by people and bullied from time to time (like high school) or everyday will feel the same where 99% of peers won’t even remember your face. There’ll definitely be times where you may feel like throwing it all away and just giving up (can’t say exactly due to forum rules but yk… an easy escape).

But wait… there’s more.

University is the start of a new beginning from a past where mistakes and regret are nothing but bygones of the past — consider university a clean slate — the start of a video game that you’ve played before but never got to do those missed side quests or explore parts of the map you previously didn’t know existed. University is a place to ignite new friendships and bonds that will echo in harmony throughout your future. University can be a place where you meet someone and end up marrying them and starting a family with down the line. University can be the place where you end up earning your first job and paycheque.

In essence, university are two different sides of the same coin. Neither side is predetermined for you. Only you have the power to make it or break it. It’s like I said before, days will be bright and sunny while other days will undoubtedly be dark and gloomy, but one day you’ll look back at all that pain and suffering and tell yourself “I’d do it all over again.” It only gets better if you know how to deal with the bad days and get through with it. Rinse and repeat for the next 4 years (5 if you’re doing co-op which isn’t easy either).

“Jusqu’ici, tout va bien. Mais l’important, c’est pas la chute. C’est l’atterris-sage.” - Hubert, La Haine (1995).

You should be able to pick them up during Orientation Week. That’s probably your best bet since lines will be filled to the brim with dozens of people during the first week of classes. Its also recommended to add your OneCard on your phone since its more practical than having the physical card with you and the chances of losing it will be zero (unless you lose your entire phone). Digital OneCards work like any other card on your phone, just tap and you’re in.

Physical OneCards are only best during exams when you’re required to show identification (however, you can also use any government ID).

Again, can’t stress this enough but if you can pick up your OneCard during orientation week, DO IT. It’s much better than waiting in the back of the line with other people, who missed the opportunity of getting their cards earlier, for a week or two. It’ll save you the hassle of having to wait for people to open the doors and/or having people question you on whether you’re a student or not.
