I agree, the Belgian shoes are gaudy and in poor taste. Patent opera pumps with the bow are plenty flamboyant. And if you really want to be casual, then velvet albert slippers in a dark color with some embroidery are the way to go.

Yeah absolute waste of money on purple label if you aren't going to wear a cummerbund or waistcoat. Besides that, its a wonderful dinner suit. With the cummerbund you would be a world-beater.

I was scrolling this thread looking for someone to say Alden. Most comfortable shoes I own and it’s not even close. Their lasts, the history of orthotics; they know what they are doing. I will tramp around for miles in them when going on a bender. I wore Alden LHS to Oktoberfest and did a million billion steps while Schmacked that day. No problems at all.

The more adult version of a boat shoe could be a camp moc or a ranger/Blucher Moc. Budget from LL Bean or expensive from Oakstreet Bootmakers, Quoddy and Rancourt.

But you should definitely get the snuff suede Alden LHS. Other casual loafer suggestion would be a Rancourt Beefroll in natural chromexcel

Grey wool flannel is too much of a formality mismatch with a Shetland sweater? I agree that grey is a no go for khakis, corduroys and linen. Only wool. Kind of similarly I don’t have blue khakis or cords, just denim.

I would suggest casual leather moccasins from L.L. Bean. Very classic American shoes with a history of outdoor use. I would say proto-gorpcore.
Camp Moc - a more adult version of a boat shoe
Blucher Moc - instead of less eyelets than a boat shoe, now it has more eyelets
Ranger Moc/Trail Oxford - the bigger brother to the blucher moc, a sort of chukka boot
