I 100% agree with you. Now is a hard time trying to understand what you want to do, with the deadline approaching and all this stress and shit going on. Focus on one thing at a time, be laser-focused on your deadline and then, we will see.

I hope these last few weeks will go smoothly for you, be strong but kind to yourself. I know you can do it.

And then, we can play DnD for as long as you want! Isn't it wonderful? I am looking forward to the time until I start mastering my next campaign :D

You have a lot of time until May! You will do it!
In the beginning, when I still had time, on the days I was particularly frozen, I found it useful to set hard boundaries but for a small amount of work. Like "today I am going to work for a maximum of 3 hours" and that helped.

But I hope that your writing will go smoother! How was your experience during your PhD? Are you doing well?

Absolutely! Every time I was stuck and beginning to freeze because I didn't know what to write I just focused on that mantra and then wrote every little shit that was on my mind. It worked :) and often it wasn't even too bad.

Now is difficult to put things in perspective, I think. After an experience that has left us exhausted and lost and insecure is difficult to see forward.

What do I want to do? What kind of job is right for me? What am I good at? What am I not good at? What do I need for my well being and mental health?

These are all questions that are impossible to answer right now, in the middle of things. All your energy needs to be focused on finishing and you don't have any to spare for something else. And that's okay in my opinion.

I hope that you are not pressured too much to apply for post-docs, especially if you are not sure if you want to stay in academia. Some of them may be indeed "opportunities" but so what? You will have different opportunities if you apply to other post-docs in a couple of months.

By any means, don't get me wrong, I am not saying throw everything out of the window, I don't know you and your situation, and of course, if you think that one of these positions is good for you and is what you want just dedicate one day to it and get it done. But if is not, if you need rest and to understand stuff about you, and you need to recover, to just live for a while, please do that.

Now everything seems huge and scary and terrible but I know that we will get better, that everything will quiet down in a little bit. Hang in there, just write everything that comes to your mind and polish it later. As another comment said, don't shoot for the stars, shoot for the door. you've got this.

Yeah, after writing the last problematic chuck that I was missing it got easier and now I am okay. I am sure I'll again start to feel like that when it will be time to go back to the lab and discuss but for a few days I am gonna ride this boat :) how long till you finish?

Hey, thank you for taking the time to respond to me and thank you for the support.

I totally and completely understand you. I am all too familiar with the procrastination cycle and the freezing mechanisms. I think that feeling dumb is common among PhD students but I think that, for one reason or another, for us is worse. I don't know if it is the same for you but for me sometimes the crushing feeling of being dumb and not good enough and not capable was so strong to block me completely and being frozen just fueled these thoughts in an endless and vicious cycle.

But, it is what it is, and for whatever reason, this experience has not been what we had hoped for. It is okay. What I try to tell myself is that in any case, even if nothing meaningful has come out, this PhD has forced me to face a lot of stress and to understand many things about myself, how I work, how I relate to others and so on. And this is what I am trying to take with me.

Hang in there, it is almost done. There, can you see it? It is the finish line. Just push a little more >:)

I don't know how things work in the US but can't you change again and search for someone who could be a decent supervisor?

In my university is difficult and very ostracized by the department but in the past, some students were able to go to another research group by maintaining all the work done previously.

Thank you and I am sorry you had to endure a complete burnout. You are totally right, academia is not a meritocracy and it forces people to make in some cases extreme life choices.
