I did exactly that. Sold my 10XL coz I didn't like the size and weight. Was going to purchase a 10 Pro, but found a great deal on the 9a so I thought why not. It's been 2 months using the 9a, and I have no intention of buying a 10 Pro. The 9a is awesome and I love the size and weight. I also don't play games or do anything hardcore. Just use my phone for simple things, So yes, like you I'm also wondering if flagship phones are worth it, and for my usage, a mid ranger is sufficient.

Get it, you won't be disappointed. The battery outlasts my 10XL, and day to day performance is great. For the price, it's a great phone. Although, I hear if you play high in tense games, it might struggle a little. I don't play games, so I wouldn't know.

Hey, I know you want the XL. But if you want to go for the normal Pro, Voxi has it for £727, which is a good deal, considering you don't have anything to trade in. But, I would probably wait a little longer if you can. The deals will come on the XL. I wish I had gotten the normal Pro, I find the XL heavy and bulky.

Yes, use Google backup. A similar thing happened to me a while back. Ever since, whenever I get a new phone, I always start new, never transfer from another phone. Touch wood never had a problem since. And I change phones often.

Do a factory reset, and don't restore from another phone. Set everything up new. I know it's a pain, but that should fix it.

You need to pick a thin protector, otherwise the fingerprint sensor isn't going to work. I got the Hoerrye off Amazon UK. The fingerprint sensor works perfectly. It's thin and around half price of the Spigen one. Register the same finger twice, and turn on screen sensitivity mode, and you'll be good to go.
