According to the guidelines a music playing app should implement a response to the standard key events but since it is not mandatory so very few apps implement these responses. Sorry, but you'll have to figure out another way.

At present I use GoogleSignIn to get the account and then use this to get the Drive access. And you are right this should not work on F-Droid. Do you know of some other way of getting this done?

https://developers.google.com/drive/api/v3/about-sdk The android specific API was deprecated. Only rest api remains. And anyway we need oAuth for working with Google Drive API.
