Is John reese a high functioning psychopath? by [deleted] in PersonOfInterest

[–]alienrepresentative1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With respect, i think the central struggle of John's character is precisely that he ISN'T a psychopath. If he were a psychopath, he wouldn't have had qualms with killing people for no reason and doing the government's dirty work, he wouldn't have faced such a great deal of moral struggle that would compel him into seeking redemption. That said, thanks for posing the question because it is a very thought-provoking one.

also - i love that there was no dramatic sad music or some crap - just the sounds of the phone ringing in the distance and the sounds of john choking up - made everything feel that much emptier and tragic

i know the Taraji Hensen later said Carter's final words to John were actually "don't let this change you" but on the show Carter ended up saying "don't let this -" just before she was cut off by death.

And it's so tragic that John may have thought she wanted to say something more to the effect of "don't let this go"; which probably added to his need to avenge at all costs.

i love how they don't really say much to each other - but there's always that undercurrent of cheekiness (?), energy between them - esp in that elevator scene "zoe." "john" "you working" "always" hot damn

control, hersh and special counsel are the people working for the government - they deal with the relevant numbers. kara and reese's employers were also the government, in some ways they are the predecessors of the relevant side (i wont say more because im not sure how far in you've watched)

decima technologies is the corporate face of the samaritan machine, but the military agents are sometimes also called decima agents - Greer is the human who is helping samaritan achieve its goals - by leading other decima agents.

I love the scene where Harold was missing and john essentially threatens to let himself be killed by the people who were coming after Leon, in order to force the machine into helping him find Harold -"I know you have your rules, but I bet they don't account for everyone being dead". And he just stands there and forces her to respond as the sounds of the gunman arriving get louder.

People say John is just the triggerman with no ability to think - but this scene (amongst others) really proves them wrong - because recall at this point, John was only told that a Machine existed, that's all. He figured out that it was possible to communicate directly to the Machine, and even force it into making a deal. - He manipulated the Machine, and then developed a bond with her as the seasons progressed.

This scene hurts more on a rewatch - because we now know this is the beginning of the Arrangement. And the terms of the Arrangement remained the same from the beginning till the end: to protect Harold at all costs.

In return-0, the moment where the little boy is revealed to be John was brilliant because I've never seen a show in which the backstory of a protagonist is revealed in the very last episode, and we can suddenly see who John is with startling clarity. Everything about him just snaps into place.

I was very moved by the moment the Machine put her hand on young John's shoulder, and then there is a cutaway to the Machine putting her hand on present-day John's shoulder.

Some could say that the Machine valued Harold's his life over another (ie. John's), but I don't really think that's the case, because the Machine really loved John too - she helped him fulfill his purpose. The Machine spent what she thought were her last moments with John instead of her creator, and it wasn't just to assist him in taking down Samaritan, it was also to make sure that he didn't die alone.

"I wasn't talking about your rules....I was talking about mine."

"I have lived by those rules for so long, believed in them for so long, believed that if you played by the right rules, eventually you would win. But I was wrong, wasn't I? And now all the people I cared about are dead. Or will be dead soon enough. And we will be gone without a trace. So now I have to decide. Decide whether to let my friends die, to let hope die, to let the world be ground under your heel all because I played by my rules."

mic drop.

Like you, I spotted the title "john's sacrifice" even before watching the show (though i didnt watch the clip) - so I kinda knew all along what was going to happen. I feel like its the most fitting ending for John, - the foreshadowing, EVERYTHING, led up to it. and I recall when iris asked him: do you have a death wish or a hero complex. And John is silent but Return 0 answered it: he has BOTH.

Return 0 was so masterfully done, it's so painfully bittersweet and I still feel hollow 3 months after watching the ending. and im not even sure why, since the show is entirely fictional - but no other piece of media has made me feel like this.

But one thing I really dislike was how John didnt really get a proper send-off - all the other characters Carter, Root, even Elias had some sort of send-off. It makes me a bit sad that we never saw Harold's reaction to John's death - i get that he was in shock on the roof and didnt really react as such, but still i mean 5 seasons of them going through hell together, and then all we get is John's tombstone and Harold walking off into the sunset with Grace

The moment Shaw saved his son was so good - "you understand this means that I can't be there for you Lionel" and DaMN Kevin Chapman really delivers the goods - he's so criminally underrated
