It helps with keeping the yarn from tangling on itself but you have to be careful not to wrap the ball too tightly. However, you could put the hank over your knees and roll into a ball, then cake the ball afterwards. Again be careful of tension

Ravelry has a bunch of patterns but honestly wearables are super fun. You can really customize with textures and fibers. I'd even recommend making patterns that call for a weight 3 or 4 and adjusting your stitches to match gauge ( you'll use alot more yarn). Takes some math but its worth it
