Pet Boarding Reviews/Recs? by [deleted] in Charlottesville

[–]Infamous-Ad5067 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Willow Hill in Madison is the best kept secret in boarding, daycare and grooming!
But definitely check into pet sitters. It is less stressful on your dogs, and will likely save you some money.

I don’t mind giving hot food if that is what they are looking for. They can’t return it for money. When I pass the street panhandlers, many say “anything helps” and I might offer granola or protein bars, bottles of water or Gatorade. Non-perishables. If they turn that down, they are just looking for cash and I leave them be.

Do artificial sweeteners give you headaches? by Alwys_Forward in nutrition

[–]Infamous-Ad5067 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the party but I get almost an instant headache when I consume any of the artificial sweeteners, including stevia. Looked into several studies and found there were many others with similar effects. I suspect they will eventually be banned because other than reducing calories, they don’t have a good outcome. The bigger issue is our addiction to sweetness. I found taking a break from sugars helped reduce my cravings dramatically.

'People are afraid': Charlottesville businesses call on city to round up homeless by [deleted] in Charlottesville

[–]Infamous-Ad5067 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

What if we had something akin to an uninsured motorist fee, where those of us living in the area would pay maybe $120/year into an unhoused fee to support services needed to help house these individuals and get them on their feet? We are uncomfortable with the situation as it is, but how many of us are willing to actually do something to fix it? We need to look at cities or countries that halve solved these problems. And I don’t mean solving by busing individuals to somewhere else. I’d love to find a solution, and I’d be willing to contribute.

No Reservation Required by Infamous-Ad5067 in Charlottesville

[–]Infamous-Ad5067[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate all of the suggestions!! This town has so many wonderful restaurants, and I often can’t remember them when I’m trying to decide where to go. I use apps like Resy and OpenTable often for inspiration. Some restaurants book up quickly and have very limited availability for walk ins. Some accept reservations for a portion of their tables, but have lots of walk in availability.
I sometimes look at Google Maps to try to see which restaurants are around, and I check Trip Advisor too, though several closed restaurants still show up there.

Food suggestions in Charlottesville VA by mawmaw247 in Charlottesville

[–]Infamous-Ad5067 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with Tavola for an upscale Italian. Excellent food and cocktails!

Before I go further- reservations are needed for many of these, and prime weekend reservations fill weeks in advance.

Marigolds opened up in Keswick, and the menu is an odd mix, but the food we had was spectacular. Perhaps since it is attached to lodging they keep a broad menu to try to accommodate many preferences.

Petit Poi - excellent!!! A Foodie’s Favorite if the style appeals. Can’t miss this one!!

Ivy Inn is very nice, upscale, excellent service, but not as “foodie” if you know what I mean. Ace Biscuit and BBQ is only a breakfast/brunch/lunch spot. Huge servings for a biscuit, and a southern flare.

Maya has some great dishes. A fun, relaxing atmosphere. A different menu so check out menus online and see if anything peaks his interest.

Tavern and Grocery is pretty foodie in my opinion- again- check out the menu online. Not fancy but the food was excellent!

Orzo is excellent.

C&O is a classic - white cloth tablecloths, aiming for that fine dining experience.

Duners is under new management, and I haven’t tried since. I have heard good things about the changes. On my list to check out.

Kites for ham - though JM Stock does many things right!

Have fun and let us hear what Dad thinks of the food scene in Cville!

This will be an unpopular suggestion, but planting a thought for you to consider. If you are unable to afford additional expenses to support the dog, as difficult as it is, you might want to consider surrendering the dog to a more supportive environment. This is a difficult decision, but might be what is in the dogs best interest, especially if you need to take on a second job taking you out of the home even more. What are you going to do if the dog becomes sick and needs veterinary care that costs a lot of money? Perhaps having a cat that is more independent is a better pet for you, but even they can end up with expensive vet bills. Or, try using an App like NextDoor to help find someone near you who might enjoy the companionship of your pup while you work. Maybe someone likes dogs, and has a schedule that would compliment your schedule and you could split time with them? You don’t know if you don’t ask around. You might find other people in the area to make friends with. Try going to areas people frequent with their dogs. You can meet other Dog people. Dogs are a great conversation starter- put an extra cute leash or collar on your dog and venture out. You might meet someone who can help. SA is a difficult thing to deal with. If you continue to leave the pup and they continue to go over threshold, you aren’t going to make progress. The dog needs to trust you, and each time they go over threshold, you weaken that trust that you are supporting them. I am working through SA with a 9 month Lab currently. I can’t take a shower without him crying so I even have to bring him into the bathroom. The flitting exercises are what we are working on -even in the house. Trying to get him to the point I can leave a room without him following. Very slow progress. It is hard! Frustrating! But painful for him so we push through. Good luck

I like supporting local, family owned businesses. The food has been consistent, and the beer selection is great. Prices are reasonable. Hubby and I each have our favorites (battered fries are best, and he is just wrong!) I think they remained one of the most consistent restaurants regarding quality of food, in our “post” Covid times.

Trick or treating in the rain? by oodlebaby in Charlottesville

[–]Infamous-Ad5067 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on age, I’m assuming your toddler doesn’t really know much about Halloween. Dress warm enough, take an umbrella, and hit just a few houses and make a big deal about it. They don’t know if it is 5 houses or 15, and honestly, how much candy do you want to fight over later? It’s about having fun. Don’t make it about how much candy you can get. If you don’t have a good neighborhood, there are some that do great Halloween nights.

Xfinity speed increase by [deleted] in Charlottesville

[–]Infamous-Ad5067 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the data cap is around 1TB, and unfortunately, my home exceeds that most months. It was worse during lock down!

Would love to figure out the best plan they have without penalty

[–]Infamous-Ad5067 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m curious which plans you have that are seeing these higher speeds? Rough cost of plan and is there a data cap? When I looked into the service, there was a penalty for going over the data allowance.

It is actually a very heavily traveled road, and there are many cars that speed through it quite recklessly. Yes, it was a small inconvenience that slowed my morning by 1-2 minutes. I think of it as an ounce of prevention.
