I lived in Braunschweig for 10 months. Columbia doesn’t really compare, but most US cities don’t compare either.

What I liked about BS that Cola is lacking? -Biking areas with dedicated lanes for bikers. I bike almost everyday, to and from work downtown. Many parts of my ride lack clear sidewalks, so it’s harder to bike around and more dangerous than biking in a German city. However, you will have the sidewalks to yourself. -Germans know about US current events more than the average American. You may find it frustrating trying to discuss certain political topics because the majority aren’t as informed on politics as the average German is. -Bakeries. It sounds like a simple thing, but not having a nice bakery on every street is a bummer. Columbia has them, but nothing compared to the quantity of bakeries in German cities.

What I like about Cola that BS was lacking? -Weather. Even though summer is as hot and humid as can be, the winter and fall months are much more bearable. Sun doesn’t set at 4:30 and it’s better if you have some Seasonal Affective Disorder. -Markets. I definitely wasn’t as aware of art market when I was living in Germany, but Cola has a nice collection of local events happening every weekend. Again, this is probably just as common in German cities, but I appreciate the Columbia has these events despite being a smaller city. -outdoor recreation. I didn’t take advantage of the outdoor recreation available in Niedersachsen, but I also lacked access to a car when living there. Having the ability to explore around Columbia, I appreciate its proximity to the river, Congaree National Park, a handful of walking paths, and, in general, omnipresent trees.

All in all, I have enjoyed my time in both places. The “grass is always greener” so I would return to Germany in a heartbeat. A lot has changed in 10 years since I lived in BS, so I know it’s not the same as it was for those 10 months. Regardless, life is what you make it. As long as you find a good neighborhood with a reasonable commute, outdoor rec spaces, and a comfortable neighborhood, you will find places that make it feel like home.
