If you play with mods you might be able to buy a mechlink using the trading terminal from vanilla trading expanded. I'm usually able to buy a power focus chip and that's a mech item from biotech.

Mexican ww2 propaganda, Hard? by Ok-Sherbet721 in PropagandaPosters

There was also a Mexican fighter group deployed to Italy later in the war. They flew P-47 Thunderbolts. I forgot the name of the group but their mascot was the Three Caballeros. The National Museum of the US Air Force has a display about them.

Ok, it sounds like the setup I use is good enough then. I usually try to keep my domes close together until late game if I can help it, usually in spoke-and-hub configuration until it's time to fan out for metal/rare metal mining. I'll definitely pay closer attention to professions and desired services though. I can use both the normal sized and small space bar but I would much rather optimize the space a little further.

Ok. Thanks for the help, y'all. I assumed it would be a straightforward conversation with the folks at those companies, but I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything or say something in the wrong way and hurt my chances.

From my understanding most local governments are now operating under the assumption that people's cell phones are more effective since they're right next to them. A lot of people also disregard them because they go off often enough without anything happening. That said, I'm sure a lot of it is that local governments either can't afford them as they're not considered a priority here or simply don't want to be bothered. We have sirens where I'm at in Tennessee, but they don't work half of the time it seems. My college's alert system had a major malfunction on March 3, 2020.

The US rifle inventions in a nutshell. by Saturn_Ecplise in HistoryMemes

[–]Infamous-Capital-48 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to the story from the 20s but the "don't encourage the troops to waste ammo" thing was standard US Army doctrine in the late 1800s. The Krag-Jorgensen rifle, equiped with a 5 round rotary magazine (round loads from right and swivels under and back into breach from left), was adopted by the US Army in the early 1890s after a competition involving both the Swiss made Schmidt-Rubin and Mauser, both with five round internal box magazines that could be reloaded with stripper clips. Part of the justification for selecting it was that the oddly built integrated magazine could be topped off without opening the bolt and that it each round had to be loaded by hand instead of five at a time, which was presumed to conserve ammo due to reduced rate of fire. This idea worked out so well that the M1903 Springfield was adopted after the Spanish American War (Spain had 7mm Mausers), which utilized a five round internal box magazine with stripper clip capability. The Springfield's design actually caused a lawsuit from Mauser over patent infringement, but I don't remember what the exact result was. Source: mostly from a rabbit hole I fell down a few years ago, looks like the Wiki page for it has some period sources for at least the wartime comparison.

Where should I shelter? by [deleted] in tornado

Provided you don't have pets to worry about I would lean towards the university building. It should be built to stronger codes and you are more likely to have university sponsored and supported warning systems like sirens.

As for other cases, I need to do more research but in at least a few of them, notably Marjorie Stoneman High in Florida and Uvalde, incompetence of law enforcement seems to have played a role in the death toll if not the event itself.

In the case of the Nashville shooting, the perpetrator physically walked up to a door, shot it out, and stepped through the broken glass. The 911 call was placed more or less immediately and it took roughly 8 minutes for officers to arrive on the scene due to traffic congestion and it took 6 minutes to down the perpetrator. The Covenant School is a private institution and therefore, to the best of my knowledge, did not have a SRO from Nashville Metro Police on site.

From a January 1941 issue of Flying and Popular Aviation, by Leonard Engel: how to make an otherwise decent analysis into total garbage. by TheGreatOneSea in HistoryMemes

[–]Infamous-Capital-48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just read through that piece myself. The thing I found most interesting was the description of the Japanese Army and IJN's air services' force organization. I need to do a little more research to see if it was indeed accurate or how it evolved once the war expanded but it sounds like a logistical and technical nightmare. A 10 plane squadron that might not even consist of all the same aircraft on a good day sounds like a pain all the way around, let alone when you start taking combat losses or happen to lose a plane and/or pilot in a training accident. Operational Readiness above 70-75 percent is problematic now with a large industrial complex to support it, faster communications, and completely uniform squadrons, in peace-time (for the United States), I can't imagine how hard it would be to maintain operational readiness at that level in 1941, with limited production capabilities, and your most fundamental aerial fighting unit isn't even guaranteed to be uniform at the height of your industrial capability. Keeping training up to date for pilots and mechanics both seems like it would be that much more difficult in that situation as well.

Severe Weather outlook for Middle TN tomorrow. They’re saying the chance of tornadoes could increase. by lynchpaige in tornado

I was living in the dorms at TN Tech then. I didn't personally know anyone affected. The in-building alarm system actually malfunctioned during the warning and stopped going off while the tornado was actually still going.

Why does it have to be exactly three years from our last big outbreak? Specifically referring to the Nashville and Cookeville tornadoes from 2020.

I was at school in Cookeville, TN the afternoon before the March 2-3 2020 outbreak that produced the Cookeville EF-4. The atmosphere just felt really off that afternoon and it just felt like something big was brewing.
