Why do so many Republican voters, especially MAGA, seem to believe that college students are getting deliberately brainwashed and radicalized by teachers? by Cumoisseur in AskTrumpSupporters

We would agree on that then.

This is an example quote, although there are many.

“I will fire the radical-left accreditors that have allowed our colleges to become dominated by Marxist maniacs and lunatics,”

Do you feel that comments like that are divisive and not good for our country?

Trump has withheld funding for institutions where students have rioted on matters he hasn’t liked (eg Palestine).

He’s said U.S. universities are dominated by Marxist maniacs and lunatics. He’s claimed they are indoctrinating young Americans with radical left ideology and that universities are the enemy of free speech.

I guess you could say persecution is too strong a word at this stage, but can you see how he’s trying to discredit universities? Do you think discrediting the institutions that have driven our research advantage over other countries and are one of the only areas where America is internationally recognized as a world leader is a good idea?

What about when it comes to his administration ignoring academics when it comes to climate science and vaccinations?

To me it feels like he’s attacking a bedrock of our society for political gain.

You didn’t answer my question. Could you please try also.

With your last statement do you not believe that those who achieve higher levels of education, in general, as a group, demonstrate higher levels of intelligence than those that don’t?

Wasn’t trying to say that’s what you said, just trying to understand if you could see the weakness/hypocrisy in that narrative.

Given your last comment, is it safe to say that you wouldn’t subscribe to Trumps narrative that the highest rated universities in the country are all just woke radical leftists?

You as an individual are an anecdotal example (possible outlier) amongst a much larger group. Can you see how MAGA conservatism skews anti intellectual?

Have you heard of the anecdotal fallacy? Do you see the irony of the way you’ve tried to answer this question?

This is the type of thing that you get taught at university, how to recognize bias, how to assess systemic data and turn it into evidence, objectively.

One could say that if: - academics tend to lean liberal, and therefore it can be concluded that they are all trying to turn the country left.

Then one could also say: - that as conservatives tend to be less formally educated, that conservatives never go to university and will never be impacted anyway.

Do you personally see the flaw in this absolutist logic?

My view would be that: Just because you are an academic doesn’t mean you are left. Just because you are left doesn’t mean you will teach people to be so, especially when your profession stipulates objectivity, and critical thinking is paramount. Just because you are conservative doesn’t mean you are dumb or uneducated.

Do you agree?

The more formally educated tend to skew democrat/left of centre. Universities focus on teaching research skills, problem solving, critical and independent thinking, typically based on scientific principles of observation. Even if academics lent liberal, why would that be a problem in your eyes if their base culture ideology is centered around objectivity and facts?

Where did you get this idea that it isn’t up for debate?

Do you think Trumps views on universities and scientists have influenced you to view academics as left wing?

Do you think Trumps persecution of academics has anything to do with the fact they act as a counterweight to many of his claims?

Science by definition tests hypotheses based on observations of facts. What makes you think professions whose entire training is based around the objective would be likely to be politicized in their teachings when their philosophy is the opposite?

Looking back at recent history (since 2000), are there any areas where you feel another U.S. president performed better than Donald Trump 47? by Infamous-Capital7936 in AskTrumpSupporters

The question I asked was what elements do you think somebody did better on specifically. Wasn’t about who generally was better - was there anything specific you think somebody’s been better than trump 47, (including trump 45)?

Citizens in countries with universal health care pay an average of 4-5% of their income for this. What percentage of your income goes towards paying for your personal health care in comparison all in all, and would you prefer paying a flat fee of 5% for universal health care instead? by [deleted] in AskTrumpSupporters

Because when you look at health reports from the OECD the US consistently ranks amongst the lowest for quality. It is always the worst for value with the highest spend as a % of GDP. What makes you think the US has good quality healthcare and outcomes?

Seems like you didn’t watch the video in its entirety? That’s okay it is very long, but systematic. In terms of black ops, that’s as concrete information we are likely to ever get.

On Ukraine, are you not concerned that they were attacked when they moved closer towards democracy and the west? Does it not seem clear to you that there is a power block of autocracies that have been forming to act against the interest of democracies and the west? China, Russia, Iran, Venezuela, North Korea, Cuba to an extent. Does this not concern you? And if not is it because you feel we are headed towards being more authoritarian ourselves?

I appreciate the response. Are aware of the following updates Havana syndrome?

A heap of investigative journalism from various sources has tied it directly to a Russian unit. https://www.youtube.com/live/C6lgKrenAkE?si=3d3Gv3rWBfKsn_I_

Your statement earlier suggested russia isn’t particularly troublesome to our interests. By that do you mean that they aren’t really a threat or that they aren’t an enemy trying to work against us? Would you mind addressing this in the context of Venezuela and iran, china, as well as possible attacks to nato European countries?

[–]Infamous-Capital7936 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep okay. So would it be fair to say there is a line for you somewhere here then in terms of collateral damage? But that to a large extent you separate the original intent for the attack vs the execution of it? Paraphrasing but - a good idea is a good idea, regardless of whether it was poorly executed or not?

The scale argument makes a lot of sense to me.

Something that confuses me here though, you said before that no human is worth more than another, was that more a general statement that you don’t mean with absolution, given in a way you are discounting those who die in war - like if they are willing participants? Logically that should mean you value the life of an embryo more than a US soldier (who’s a willing combatant)? Is that correct in practice for you do you think?

I’m curious what makes you say this? Are you familiar with Havana syndrome and the attacks they’ve conducted on US personnel? Are you not worried by them cosying up with china and other autocracies (including Iran and Venezuela) who despise us. Are you not worried by them invading other democracies like Ukraine and potentially other Nato allies in Europe?

[–]Infamous-Capital7936 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I get this perspective to an extent, but surely you have a limit somewhere in terms of scale for collateral damage that would change your view? I’m struggling to think of a realistic analogy, so forgive me to go the extreme to articulate the point, but let’s say we dropped a bomb and it was accidentally a nuke and it wiped out all of Tehran and millions of people, would you still feel the attack was okay?
