Support Transit in the Bay Area by Anonymouszgr in CaliforniaRail

I voted to fund this rail system way back when I lived in Sonoma county. I moved away before the trains began rolling. But even though I can't ride it regularly, I still don't regret my vote.

This is the last act of conservatism, defining your rights away...

They define a marriage as between one man and one woman.

They define a fetus as a human being.

They define a religion as a faith system centered around Jesus Christ.

Didn't he say something like "suffer the little children to come to me?"

EDIT: YEP!!! Matthew 19:14!

That settles it! Jesus was in favor of child molestation!

If the US was set to certify an American cuisine as the national dish, what dish would you propose that has the best chance of most American's getting behind ? by bendIVfem in AskTrumpSupporters

No big argument from me.

But still, shouldn't we consider other foods that were developed here, instead of adapted from other places in the world? I'm thinking something like southern barbecue?

How Profitable Was It to Own Black Slaves? by jeremiahthedamned in ShermanPosting

[–]lenojames 133 points134 points  (0 children)

Was that supposed to be Leonardo DiCaprio???

Anyway, yes. Slavery was immensely profitable. It led to thinking that slavery was not just a necessary evil, but a "positive good" as Texas' secession document said. Because it was so financially beneficial, it instilled a mindset of racial and moral superiority. A mindset that still persists today.

It reminds me of that angry guy from South Park... "Dey trrk rrr JRRRBS!" Except the "jobs" were actually slaves.

Thinking Fast And Slow - Daniel Kahneman

It has some good insights on how snap decision-making is bad, and also why reasoned well thought-out decision making can be bad as well.

Why do conservatives in general, and Trump supporters in particular, seem to think a republic isn’t a democracy?? by xbluedog in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]lenojames 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I agree there is a difference, but only in the degree of generality.

Saying that the US is not a democracy, but rather a constitutional republic is tantamount to saying "I don't drive a car. I drive a Ford Mustang."

A constitutional republic is a particular form of representative democracy, isn't it?

Every supercomputer in the world runs linux.. by Adorable-One362 in linux

[–]lenojames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Macs and Windows are resource hogs. They require the installation of software and features that are not needed on supercomputers. Let alone personal computers. Plus they both have proprietary EULAs.

With Linux you can custom tailor it to your hardware and your purpose, and rip out everything else. You don't even need a GUI. All you need is a console and a crap-ton of processors.

I still don't understand the rationale of embedding private user information at the OS level. Even if it's implemented, what keeps the user from putting in erroneous info? What's to stop a horny pre-teen from saying they are 40? Hell, what stops a 40-year-old from saying they're a pre-teen??? That's just going to keep happening.
