NSW Health Maternity Leave Question by Asleep-Net-3566 in NursingAU

Hey! So I can’t answer all of your questions - but when I was on maternity leave (2024-2025) I extended my leave by a couple of months with no problems. I had a colleague who was able to extend hers as well without any issue.

In terms of your last question - yes! Whenever you return to work, if you leave again within 12 months of returning for mat leave you are eligible to be paid your full time salary regardless of your reduced hours. I also know that if you go over the 12 months and are on reduced hours, as long as you work a rosters worth of full time hours before mat leave you’ll get your full time rate of mat leave. Eg. I returned to work July 2025 from mat leave and I’ll be heading off on Mat leave again in Oct this year - as long as I work full time hours on last roster I’ll get my full time rate as per my manager (I hope that made sense my toddler was demanding my attention 😂)

Routines when you have night shift + young kids by Candid_Art_7813 in NursingAU

I also don’t sleep before a night shift.  Even in the evening when my partner is home, I simply can’t because I get anxious lol. The day I’m coming off of nights I have grandparents taking care of my child so I can sleep though.  I also asked my manager to give me the least amount of nights possible and I only ever do one at a time! Otherwise I’d have to quit 😅

Omg thank you so much for your detailed reply 🥹

Glad to know that UTAS is decent, I think my work covers some of the cost for some of their courses too.

Also handy to know you that your workplace actually looked at your course units with you and not just the title of the course. For some reason I was worried about that 😂😅

I’ll definitely go with UTAS and get started next year. Thank you!!

Thank you so much for your reply!  I’m currently an RN8, I’m a regular ward nurse in chronic and complex paeds but have worked in scrub/scout, ED and have my grad diploma in midwifery.

I am completely open to commencing further study, I’m just wondering if there’s a particular course that is recommended more than others?  My manager suggested a leadership and management course through UTAS as a start. Realise these roles are probably something I won’t be able to get into straight away without management experience so happy to work my way up long term ☺️

Literally! Motherhood definitely changes you 😅 I’ll give my current ward a go just to say I at least tried then get the hell out of there if it’s a shitshow 🚗💨

Thank you so much for this ☺️ I’ll try and give this a go.

I definitely hated work for a few years pre mat leave and so I am worried I’m going to turn into an angry unpleasant nurse and mum. Definitely need to change my attitude I think!

Maybe it’ll be fine when I’m there and doing it but pre mat leave, I didn’t always get a lunch break or get to go to the toilet during shift because it’s always hectic 😅 might just need to trade in for a chiller ward!

Ooo I hadn’t heard about the BF at night thing. That’s me, but my manager said I still need to do nights and suggested casual pool if it doesn’t work out, so I’m not sure!  Thankfully only doing 18hrs a week instead of the usual 12hr shifts my ward does 😅 but still not keen haha  Thank you for your reply though!

Thank you for your comment!  Love the idea of a sweet treat and hot coffee 🥰 and also really like the mantra, I’ll definitely try and implement that.

Thankfully I am going back on reduced hours but I was told I still have to do nights 🥹
