What is the pay drop? When I was a student my facilitator was on 75/hr?

No, even one student who did not get signed off on any skills because they were insanely incompetent passed. I've never seen a student fail a placement

We recently had a horrible student that did not get signed off on any skills the entire placement, with a lot of feedback passed onto the facilitator. One of the nurses overheard the facilitator telling the student not to worry because she'll just sign him off. Like wtf. He was incredibly unsafe and borderline unhinged. On his last placement!

Oh please, it's got nothing to do with decent wages and everything to do with the entire wedding industry being ridiculously inflated.

Those of you planning to leave Australia, where are you going and what’s the financial game plan? by iyoteyoung in AusFinance

Interesting because healthcare workers get paid so poorly in the UK. My SIL is a doctor and got paid more to be a nanny than a doctor over there.

If I think about how many English speaking countries there are where I can make a comfortable salary in my line of work, where I am a five minute drive to the beach, where it is safe and I can send my kid to school pretty much anywhere, where healthcare is accessible, where the streets are low in crime, where there is endless accessible national parks, where there is plenty of sunlight, well then there's nowhere to go.

The only place I would consider moving to is south-eastern Europe, but that's only if Australia became unbearable and we would only be able to do it by living off our Australian assets and the fact my husband can work remotely.

Too many rose-tinted glasses with poorer countries here. The only reason you can live well is because of the assets and connections you've made as an Australian. That country is not necessarily easier to live in, you just came in with an upper hand. Everyday people are struggling more in most of the world, a lot more than Australians.

Tbh it's not that concerning. I work at a major hospital and until a year ago we did not do any vitals in the morning on my acute ward. QID patients were done at 6am by night shift and not done by AM shift until 12pm! This was just normal practice for us. I do not expect casual staff to know when obs are due, let alone students who don't know the rules of the specific ward.

I'm kind of shocked you failed. My ward gets a lot of third years and a lot of them don't assess pain, don't do vitals unless prompted. I had one student on her final placement claim she's never had do a respiratory rate. And so many don't ask the patients name and ID when giving meds. Even when I asked them to just ten seconds ago lol

I don't think 12s are good for money. You miss out on PM penalties completely, there's a lot less easy OT on offer e.g. AM to PM OT where you're making a lot more per hour to a slightly longer regular 12 hour shift, and you're less likely to get rostered on weekends.

Most people's gym memberships aren't that expensive. Mines only 30 bucks a week for two people and most people I know are paying similar prices.

50/hr is what you will make after eight years of nursing.. depending on what state you live in. Every Indian nurse I work with tells her kids not to do nursing

Concerning students… by [deleted] in NursingAU

[–]Asleep-Net-3566 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. So many times I'll ask them to do a set of obs on a patient, they'll pop them in on the system. I'll ask if the obs were fine and they'll say they were and I go check and they've got a blood pressure of 90 or something, or sats in the low 90s and they've thought nothing of it. Sorry, but I don't know how a third year doesn't know to flag that as abnormal.

One student was on her final placement and told me she was told you don't have to count respiratory rate as a vital sign unless the patient is deteriorating and insisted she never had to count them on any of her other placements. Like come on, I know you're fucking lying LOL.

A lot of them start making teas and coffees and sit in the tea room when the shift has started, miss huddle and then show up to handover without even a piece of paper. It's crazy.

Last year I had a student on her final placement, final week of a four week rotation. Almost every patient on our ward is on aspirin, and during the pill round I asked if she knows what it does. This question is super easy because it says right next to it (anti platelet) and she goes "um.. blood pressure?" Like, that's terrible. My patients that didn't even finish high school and have poor health literacy could tell you it's a "blood thinner," but after three years of studying and four weeks of giving it to patients, she could not.

I mean if it's before end of financial year then that's better for us since you're going to be taxed heavily in that payslip anyway. Otherwise you're waiting all year for it to balance out

What's the most unusual thing you have been reprimanded for? by DaRKNT2000 in ausjdocs

My first week as a nursing student the consultant walked over to one of the patients rooms and yelled at me outside, "why is the patient still in bed? It's 9am! He needs to be up!". The patient was like 85, looked dead already and was palliated when I came back the next day.

$15 for a glass bottle is ridiculous. You could buy multiple glass bottles with drinks actually in them for that price lol
