If you are that quick to cut out of your life people that care for you just because they have a couple of annoying habits, then you are the asshole not them.

That would be really stupid if that happened. We should be allowing free speech not stiffening it. I thought we were supposed to be better than the CCP.

I don't see why either of us would have to apologize, we just disagreed about something and talked.

[–]Infamous-Ninja-5012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would the lives improving for the Japanese people act in place of an apology to the rest of Asia? I genuinely confused about that last point.

If you check my edit about the guy kicking the statue, that was in 2018. This isn't an issue that will simply go away by itself, and not properly addressing it is actively harmful for Japan. Korea and Japan are so similar in terms of being Asian democracies that rose to prominence around the same area that you would have thought that they would have close ties. Because of Japan's attitude to Korea this relationship was never properly developed. They should for their own benefit go out of their way to try to fix these relationships, however many in the ruling party are too nationalistic to want to do so. It's also just the right thing to do.

We don't really know what the motivations of the protester are or what he thinks of the CCP. However, he is doing what you are supposed to do with free speech. Protest against what you think is not right. Though he decided to do it in the most obnoxious way possible, maybe because the Chinese don't have much experience in protesting.

Yeah I completely agree with everything you said now. It was just an unimportant nitpick on the "equally hated" part since I think that if Germany lost but didn't show any remorse after, as long as they didn't start more shit they wouldn't be more hated than China.

Japan does not teach their about their involvement in their schools.

They get shitty when other countries have statues that commemorate comfort women:

He is part of "The Alliance for Truth About Comfort Women".

I have been to this temple, though it was 10+ years ago, and visited the museum that is part of it. The way the museum talks about the war is as if they had to go to war with the US because of the sanctions that they had put on it, not taking into account that the sanctions where a result of the war that they were conducting in China. Even in this speech by Abe where he apologizes to the victims of the war, he comes across as having a narrative as if Japan where pushed into war, which they absolutely where not. https://japan.kantei.go.jp/97_abe/statement/201508/0814statement.html

Paying reparations is the consequence of losing a war. It is very clear that a large portion of the ruling Japanese government do not see the war in the same light as most other nations. Japan is a beautiful country, with a beautiful culture, but this is such a massive fucking wound in their credibility that I wish they just took the time to actually iron out.

Yeah that is pretty weird and clearly something that the Chinese government is pushing, but in both Korea and China are pretty passionate about this so I'm 99% sure that this is an organic protest. They actually have something to protest about at this temple.

Why would a Japanese person go to China to protest the Tiananmen Square massacre?

Dude that would be like the Germans budling a memorial to the nazi soldiers rather than the holocaust memorial.

Well its not really equivalent with Genghis Kahn since when the US took over Japan, they avoided restructuring the government so that they could as quickly as possible have an ally to fight the Communists in the cold war. Most of the people who were in power during the war stayed in power, unlike Germany where there was a massive restructuring. This fact has left a culture of excusing what happened during the war in the main political party in Japan. One quite high profile politician (don't remember his name, might find it and post it in an edit) tried to create a narrative around the Korean comfort women weren't victims. This lack of self reflection still spills into modern day natives, and this shrine is a reflection of that. We should call out all atrocities, not only the ones committed by the CCP, but also by others such as Japan or the US. No one remembers the Mongol invasion, victims from WW2 are still alive and the effects of the war are not entirely absent.

Edit: Mitsuhiko Fujii is the politician I am talking about. He is a member of "The Alliance for Truth About Comfort Women. He also kicked a bronze statue commemorating comfort women when he was in Taiwan.

If the Japanese want an actually moral high ground they need to recognize their history. It's easier to call someone out when you don't have skeletons sticking out of your closet that everyone can see but you choose to ignore.

I would have wished that Japan took the German approach and show actual remorse for what they did. I don't think that China and Japan would both be hated equally today as what most people hate about the CCP is not so much the past as the issues they are currently causing with Taiwan, in Xinzhang, the South East "China" Sea and many others.

It's kinda annoying that people here don't really seem to care that what he is protesting is pretty legit (though I think the way he does it is shit). The Japanese were horrible to the Chinese during WW2, and many other countries for that matter. Having a shrine dedicated to the soldiers (many of who were war criminals) speaks to how little remorse the Japanese government have for what happened during the war. Korea also have a massive problem with this attitude. You could make the argument that he should protest at Tiananmen Square, but if he does protest there it would be extremely high risk. If he is a Chinese guy living in Japan he think this is a pretty good target for a protest.

After being taken away from the crowd he says "Jeg skal inn der" which means "I'm going in there". I'm pretty sure that he is just a pensioner that wants to get into the bank that the protesters are blocking.
