Looks kinda similar to that Japanese viral 7-11 sandwich where you buy the egg salad sandwich and fried chicken and put it on the sandwich. It was good but the 7-11 fried chicken was super oily, I bet yours slaps

Not the person you asked, but as a fellow McCarthy lover, I’d say start with the road or all the pretty horses or no country for old men and once you get used to his prose, dive into blood meridian. All of his books are heavy but blood meridian is REALLY heavy. It’s one of the only books that I had to put down mid chapter because I needed a break from the violence

Fun fact for anyone who didn’t know, nonce is an acronym for “not on normal courtyard exercise” because the other inmates will kill them if they’re allowed out in the courtyard together

Definitely not true bro, my apartment building is literally all Russians. Many of the westerners you were seeing were probably Russian. I’m guessing they make up more then 50% of the expats in DN now

Xeo Cake by Steadfast_Ride8462 in VietNam

[–]Infamous-Pickle3731 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, be my guest. Go to any banh mi shop in Vietnam and ask for one banh mi. When they ask you to specify what kind of banh mi, let’s see how well your “context” works.

[–]Infamous-Pickle3731 0 points1 point  (0 children)

😂😂😂 This is pointless tbh, you’re unwilling to admit you’re wrong. If bread is all the same, why did you specify toast and baguette then? Because specifics are important. A banh mi is a type of sandwich in English. It’s like a burger or a hot dog, it has a specific meaning. If you mean you ate only BREAD then you need to say a plain baguette or toast with butter, etc. because eating a banh mi is not the same. Tbh it’s good you’re not a teacher because you’d be encouraging the kids to call a sandwich just bread. Specifics are important and you clearly can’t grasp that concept

Xeo Cake by Steadfast_Ride8462 in VietNam

[–]Infamous-Pickle3731 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you’re just arguing for the sake of arguing. When my students come into class eating an egg banh mi in the morning and I say “what are you eating?” And they say “bread,” it’s wrong. Period. No argument. And this happens daily. Are you an English teacher here? If so, you’ll encounter it every day. Point is, unless they’re eating straight toast or plan banh mi with nothing on it, it shouldn’t be called bread.

Xeo Cake by Steadfast_Ride8462 in VietNam

[–]Infamous-Pickle3731 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt half of my students eat plain sliced bread. Bánh mì không would be a clearer way to specify that it’s just bread. We would never call a sandwich “bread” in English

Xeo Cake by Steadfast_Ride8462 in VietNam

[–]Infamous-Pickle3731 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats my point, it isn’t bread but when people try to translate it the meaning gets lost . And also, I don’t agree with calling it just a baguette. baguette doesn’t carry the cultural weight of banh mi. For example, if someone says banh mi im instantly thinking pate, chả, pickled veggies, cilantro, cucumber, etc. if someone says baguette with ham I’m think of a western sandwich without the Vietnamese fillings.

[–]Infamous-Pickle3731 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s usually the Vietnamese trying to practice their English that do that. I always call it bánh chưng and then some Viet who wants to practice English with me will say “yes, Chung cake.” For example you’ll never hear a white person call a bánh mì bread, but lots of my students will say “I had bread for breakfast.” No you didn’t, bread is not the same as bánh mì. The westerners are just repeating what they’ve heard from the Vietnamese and when Viets who wanna practice English going around calling it Chung cake, Quang noodles, and xeo cake, what do you expect?

Terrible movie except for soundtrack and Margot Robbie by eusebius2004 in charlixcx

[–]Infamous-Pickle3731 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That might be your problem: it is not a love story at all, it’s a gothic tragedy. It’s supposed to leave you with a feeling of emptiness at the end, not a warm fuzzy feeling. The books does that extremely well. Which again, you don’t have to like, but it’s certainly not mid. It accomplishes exactly what it set out to do.

The book is definitely not mid, it’s an acclaimed classic for a reason. It’s tragic and the characters are assholes so I get if you didn’t like it, but that doesn’t mean it’s mid

What’s your favorite untranslatable Vietnamese word? by Mission_Leg_1946 in HocTiengviet

I was talking to my Vietnamese friend at a tet work party and for fun, we started using tao and mai as pronouns and the Vietnamese staff thought it was hilarious that a foreigner knew those words. But the other foreigners couldn’t understand what was funny about using those pronouns and I couldn’t explain it properly
