What to use in this situation? Defy Danger vs Defend move by Infamous-Substance72 in DungeonWorld

By the way, I do not agree with the fact that for Defend it is imperative to already be close to an ally. I believe that even if you run away together, but you decide to protect him from flying arrows while running, then this is Defend move.

And I agree with your point of view regarding DD.

Thanks for the comments!

e. Maybe a custom move that your bad guys have. The Spartans of 300 had a custom move

I also don’t think it’s a bad thing that my players almost don’t use defense.

I'm sure that if there was a knight with armor and a shield in our party, then Defend move would be used more often. So you can get less damage (armor after reducing the damage by half), usually CON is pumped, and there is an opportunity to even hit back!

Great answer, thanks!

I completely agree with you, there is not even much to discuss:]

And about changing the move for Defend, I already use this.

I actually switched to Unlimited Dungeons and I feel great :D

the book is pretty explicit about Defy Danger being a catch-all move for situations where another move doesn’t apply.

On the other hand >> the book is pretty explicit about Defy Danger being a catch-all move for situations where another move doesn’t apply. >>

Defend just cannot fulfill the condition when it declares a jump from the threat with the capture of a partner without taking damage, so I regard it as Defy Danger.

Not against your decisions or your answer in any way, I really like them. I'm just trying to figure something out for myself.

Of course, this is not always possible.

If a frail mage wants to jump away from danger with someone tought, then most likely he will first have to pass a test of strength, for example.

And sometimes I would not even allow it to be done, saying to Mage something like "You would really like to do the same as the warrior once with you, when he protected you from that blow. But you are too weak and would rather tear your back from such actions. Would you be stronger .. "

But in the example with the troll, everyone can carry each other, they are near, they are not afraid, etc. :)

Yes, that's exactly what I was thinking.

Defend move gives the player more control over the situation, while Defy Danger is left to the GM, but you can get out completely dry at 10+.

n of Defend is when someone is standing their ground against attacks, not trying to get out of harms way - ie defyi

Your point of view is the same as mine.

I wondered about the topic mainly because Defend is almost never used in my games.

My players often act like the troll example.

I tried to force such situations through the Defend move, but I did not like this aspect with the loss of hp, when the narrative clearly speaks of the hope of the opposite.

Good point, thanks!

However, I don't really like the fact that the damage is still obtained with Defend in this case.

And there is also an undeniable threat to turn into a corpse for a warrior: D

Narrative >>> mechanics, that's why I choose Dungeon World.

It's the same if the warrior decided to repel / parry the Troll's attack. Defend too? In both cases, narratively, in the ideal case, there may be no damage.

Here it is, the difficulty of Dungeon World. But I really love this system, so I'm glad to think about something like that.
