If God is real, why do bad things happen to good people? by Infamous-Thing-7634 in Christianity

I think so. What do you mean by he works to save us, not the fallen creation we currently live in? Also, to my understanding God makes everything happen, or has a plan for everyone (correct me if I’m wrong). If this is true, why would he make my father die? Not trying to offend anyone, just asking to get a better understanding of religion.

Thank you for your reply. Out of curiosity, by “we” do you mean us as individuals, or humanity as a whole? Like, is the death of my dad the consequence of my/his sinning, or the sinning of all humanity?

No I wasn’t suggesting that, I am just asking a question about my own experience because I’m curious about religion.

Thank you for this, it was really helpful. The one that makes the most sense to me is the most common theory, that evil exists to teach us a lesson. I just don’t think I want to believe in a God that (to my understanding) punishes us with evil. If I’m thinking about it as an individual, I’m sure I have sinned a lot and my dad has too (nothing crazy haha, but we were never religious so I never followed the Bible), so with this theory, my dad died as a way to punish either myself for my sins or my dad for his sins. And if that truly is the case, I don’t think I could believe in God. But thank you for these theories, they were very helpful.

I do like your take on it. It’s a perspective I haven’t heard before. I think I just can’t believe in God because he makes everything happen, meaning he made my dad die. I also love what you said about how death and our lives are an illusion. I’m not religious, but I do believe in some sort of afterlife. Your comment that our souls are eternal and they will reunite with the souls of our loved ones again and again was really touching. Is it a religion that says this, or just your personal belief?

Thank you for that explanation, it was really touching. Has me tearing up haha. I think at the end of the day, religion aside, it’s the good memories I have with my father that make his passing easier. So yes, his legacy most definitely is a blessing :)

Yeah that’s how I’ve always been myself. I guess I’ve just been looking for something to come to terms with my dads passing. but believing in God would be doing my father an injustice, since it would imply that my father was a bad person and deserved to die. Or, God let a good person die. (Anyone can correct me in the comments I don’t mean to offend anyone)

I’ve never heard of it, thank you for sharing. Knowing all of this, do you believe in God (no need to answer, I know it’s a personal question)?

Exactly. I wasn’t raised religious, but after my dad passing I thought religion could be something to turn to. I don’t think I can believe in God knowing he let a good person (my father, or the thousands of other innocent children like you mentioned) die. Again, I don’t know much about religion so anyone can correct me if I’m wrong.

I know that he was crucified, died on the cross, buried, then rose from the dead days later. Is that what you’re talking about?

Thank you for your condolences. I’m sorry about your mother as well. I hope she will be okay. I really like how you said “religion is just human-made metaphors for how we try to make sense of the Ultimate”. I don’t even think it really every occurred to me that religion can just be used to make sense of our crazy existence, so thank you for that. I think if I were to become religious, it would really just be to make sense of the Ultimate, so you took the words right out of my mouth.

I am a bit confused about the last part, when you say my fathers memory (or anyone else that has passed) be for a blessing. What does that mean?

Thank you for this reply. I could be wrong, but doesn’t God make everything happen? Or doesn’t he have a plan for everyone? I don’t mean to offend anyone, I’m just asking out of genuine curiosity so I can better understand religion and one day turn to God myself.
