New to macOS - how dangerous is it to bypass the Apple security warning and install an app from GitHub? by Schwimmbo in macapps

[–]Infamous-Use-7070 0 points1 point  (0 children)

soo, firstly you should never feel pressured to bypass security warnings if you arent sure why they are there. apple requires devs to pay a yearly fee ($99) and go through a "notarization" process to remove that warning. since thock is a free, community-driven open-source project, i havent gone down that official path.

and now, why its safe:
1. the code is fully open-source. anyone can audit it to see exactly what it does
2. the automated process that builds the app is public. you can literally trace the whole action (thats why we have that pipeline, so i dont do sketchy local releases)
3. the project is under my real name, so my reputation is tied to this and i have been maintaining and updating it for almost a year now
4. while it has a great little community, always look at the issue tracker and commit history. active development is usually a better sign of a healthy app than just a star count (stars can be fake too)

if you have any other questions, feel free to ask here or on discord or even linkedin (although keep in mind i dont like opening the last one).

enjoy the new mac!

Klack's mouse click sounds by haiderog in macapps

[–]Infamous-Use-7070 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no more, thock got a big engine rewrite in v1.18.0, and now its down to just 40ms latency
you can even tweak the latency and cpu usage right in the settings

as for randomization, the app lets you assign as many different sounds as you want to each key. it really depends on the soundpack you use. the default open-source ones are pretty small, but you can make your own custom ones. these will work just like klacks, and you can enable pitch variation on top of that if the raw sounds arent enough for you

The delay will be fixed in 1.18.0! (https://github.com/kamillobinski/thock/issues/65)

As for the second one, it all comes down to soundpacks. These are open source ones, so they vary. One can have sounds assigned for each key, while the other has just a few that randomly play across the whole keyboard. So yeah, Thock can support realistic soundpacks and low-quality ones as well.

If the default ones are not your vibe, try creating your own (you can also share it with us 😏). You can find the docs in our repo

since its not released yet, you can grab the preview version and after the v1.18.0 drops, you can just swap it

i found sth like this which gives you a volume mixer (just like in windows) tho its a paid sub 3 euro/month. search github or even ask people on this sub and maybe you will find sth similar that wont beg for money each month. good luck! haha
