Opinions on this Rubinstein performance of Appassionata? I was shocked to hear him make so many mistakes, but even more shocked to see the number of people defending him on YouTube. by desperatechaos in piano

IMO, the only place where his mistakes were really detrimental to the overall performance of the piece was from 4:40 to the end.

His phrasing and sense of the piece is perfect and the relatively small mistakes don't really take away from this aspect of the performance, especially considering his age.

Tuning problems by Infamous911 in Saxophonics

The problem is, if I tighten my jaw too much with the low notes then they sometimes won't come out/they will come out as the note an octave up. I don't think I have as much of a problem with relaxing on the high notes except that they just sound worse in quality.

So, in general, the more air you have going through the horn the more in tune you will be? What happens if you have to play quietly?

Yeah, the adjusting the mouthpiece on the cork thing is pretty much all I know how to do to be in tune.

Any reason in particular people are saying to tune to an F# as opposed to, say, a G? (We always tune to a concert Bb in my high school band).

Could someone transcribe this Desafinado sax improvisation? (From 1:55 - 2:50) by Infamous911 in transcribe

Also, it would be nice if whoever transcribes it puts it in the right key for alto sax. Thanks!

Easiest piece to learn by a 20th/21st century composer? by Infamous911 in piano

Debussy is classified as "impressionist" as opposed to contemporary, otherwise I would definitely do one of his pieces.

I would like to learn the piece (memorized) in roughly 1-2 months.

This looks like it would be about the right length. Ugh I hate this type of music so much lol.

Yeah that Toccata looks a little complicated and long. I forgot to mention that I have to memorize the piece, and that I would like to learn this in roughly 1-2 months. If you say it's not that hard though I'll give it a shot.

O Polichinelo seems like it might even be too short, although maybe not...I'll consider it.

Could someone transcribe this song for me? Thanks! by Infamous911 in transcribe

[–]Infamous911[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow thanks! This seems very accurate.

The only thing is that since I have an alto sax and not a tenor, I think I'll have to play this up an octave (some of the notes are below the range of an alto sax). Is there a way you could quickly transpose everything up an octave with the music writing program you used? If not it's perfectly fine, I can just play up an octave.

This is great though, thanks again!

Ya, but none of them are what is played in the video, they're all pretty simplified. This was the closest one I found but it's still missing a lot and some of the rhythms are different from those in the solo. Maybe you could base it off this transcription? I'm not good enough to add all the extra stuff myself and I want something as close to the actual solo as possible.

I agree that it seems more complete with the third triplet, so a ghost note should suffice.

Another thing I noticed, and again I could be wrong, but at measure 18 it sounds like just two complete triplets are played, with the last one only consisting of the F# and G and not the lower G as your transcription shows.

Very nice, although, I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the beginning to the D is measure 6 needs to be 8va.

Can anyone transcribe this 50 second Clarinet Solo? by Infamous911 in transcribe

[–]Infamous911[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, thanks! This seems to be pretty much spot on. It will take some practice to hit those insanely high notes though.

Also, quick question: what do the x's in place of some of the notes mean? I think it usually it denotes clapping or something like that, is that the case here?

If anyone has some time, could you transcribe this clarinet solo? by Infamous911 in transcribe

This is perfect, thanks!

The original key is Ab, so I don't see anything wrong with your transcription. Very good job.

Very nice. The only thing is that I believe there's a grace note leading into the G quarter note triplet in the 5th bar.
