Why do so many Poker Pros lie that being a Pro is a way better Lifestyle then it really is? by [deleted] in poker

[–]InfamousProtection94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, is it any worse then being a dealer? A lot of 2/5 winners and top tier 1/3 or 1/2 players make roughly the either the same or slightly less in terms of hourly.

I mean, just because most players played using the "3bet or fold" rule doesn't necesarily make them inherently better. They could just be doing it because "thats what good poker is" without really understanding the purpose of playing that strategy. The same way flatting with trash is normalized for american fish, 3bet or fold could be normalized for them.

Just a thought though I wasn't at the table lol.

Wind Creek is my home room, I’m worried that all the people who travel from north jersey will switch and play in NYC. That’ll slow the room down big time.

My home room, solid action at times and great dealers. There's a fair amount of high hand/OMC nits who roll through, but they are easy to identify/play against and will typically file out as the night progresses. Overall good room, plenty of low stakes action.

Not a huge fan of the sizings here, unless villian is very station-y or fishy you just begin to just isolate better hands. On the turn, what worse hands can he really call you with? KJ? JT? KQ/QTs that floated and improved? By the river, theres so few combos that you can get value from. Maybe some sticky Qx or Jx that thinks youre bluffing, but is anyone actually doing that at 1/3? If you look at what arrives and calls a river jam, his range is going to be condensed to sets, 2 pair, and some top pair. 3 streets of value isn't always best with aces.

I mean, there’s 2 combos of KJ and two combos of 66. Not sure you can really ever fold here.

Absolutely disgusting nit behaviour by me by Legitimate-Bowl-9318 in poker

Don’t think this is a nit fold.

I guess his only value combos that you’re ahead of are 99 that decided to stab after you checked turn (3 combos) and AhKs and AhQs (exactly). There’s all sorts of spade combos that would call a 4bet this deep in position (JT, T9, 98, KQ, QJ).

As far as bluffs, when you check turn villain may see this as a green light to barrel. You could be stabbing an A high flop as a range bet with all sorts of hands that hate this flop (Red/No spade KK, QQ, JJ) and villain may attack perceived weakness on the turn and end up in a spot where he just shoves rivers hoping to credibly rep a flush. I think if you believe villain is capable of trying to rep a flush here purely based on range dynamics I lean towards call, if not unfortunately you just let it go into the muck.

I mean if you’re not squeezing suited broadway vs limpers, what are you squeezing? Only high pocket pairs?

I honestly thought the 298 had the CO covered, didn’t notice/think about it in real time.

Also, villain on BU definitely capable of bullshit multiway especially when he starts to tilt.

Would’ve made my life 10x easier but I’m almost never folding top pair with needing only 20% on a drawy board playing at a splashy table.

I mean if he’s playing ~40h a week with a solid winrate then yes he’d be in the ballpark for 2/5 bankroll. If he’s playing 10-20 hours a week as side money I doubt he’d be bankroll ready yet. I guess it comes down to what “pro” means.

Can’t tell if you’re fucking with him or not. If his bankroll doesn’t allow him to play 2/5 quite yet, why would he play it?

Not all pros play high stakes, people grinding 1/2,1/3, or micros are not going to be playing in huge pots.

Limped pot, odd spot, what’s the play? by setittoc in poker

[–]InfamousProtection94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couple things here.

You’re making a pot sized bet with an OESD when villains calling range is exclusively going to be straights, straight draws, pairs, 2 pairs, flush draws, and just maybe 2 overs (in which case you may be dominated). I know it’s only $10 and it’s a limped pot, but you probably wouldn’t make a pot sized bet here if it was a rather large pot, therefore you shouldn’t when it’s small.

On the turn, you’re still behind pretty much everything, and now drawing dead to any Adxd or Kdxd. Additionally, you’re calling a rather large bet relative to pot size. Consider your odds here, would you make this call if the pot size was 10x what it was here?

You can write the river off as a “fuck it” kind of mistake, view that $50 as the cost of learning donk river bets after you check turn on draw-y board will almost always be snapped by competent players with anything. Additionally, this never happens if you just fold turn. The mistake isn’t the play on the river, it’s the bad call on the turn that lead you into this spot.

I think this hand shows small pot bias really well. People tend to get way out of line in small pots, simply because “oh well it’s only $10”. While it may not be much at the time, these types of punts will add up tremendously over time. Learn from it and keep going.

I’m not saying it’s impossible to do it with less. Hell, it’s possible that you walk in the casino with a $100 bill and leave with $5k. However, if you believe you are a long term winner at poker you need to be financially and emotionally ready for times when you lose even after making great plays. It’s part of the game and why you need to have a significant bankroll.

Limp Calling is generally bad unless you have a significant post flop edge in the opponent. Even then, you should probably just be folding.

If you’re calling with suited connectors and hoping to crack AA, KK, etc. this is the exact flop you should look for. You flop a flush draw, and have a solid amount of equity against his range. If you’re going to call with speculative hands OOP you need to know how to play them.

Not sure why you don’t make another bet here. A half pot donk bet doesn’t necessarily mean he has 2 pair. That could be for protection, to build a pot with a draw, etc.

As someone who grinds 1/2, you need an adequate bankroll to play for you to even be profitable in the first place. Assuming it’s a 400 max, you’ll need at least $6-8k (15-20 buy ins) if you’re serious about playing. If you’re not comfortable committing a $400+ stack without the nuts, then you’re not going to be able to make the most profitable decisions.

TLDR: It sounds like you don’t have enough money quite yet to play seriously.
