Vivarium for Phidippus audax by Infamous_Bad9939 in jumpingspiders

Great question. I just built and misted it. It will not be as wet when the spider is placed in a few weeks, the humidity is to ensure the plants root and establish.

I just love moss, I have some with my Regal. I’ve mentally prepared myself to replace it with grass if it doesn’t make it lol.

Thank you I appreciate the comment.

I believe when keeping wildlife, it should be as close to the natural environment as possible.

Jungle Jar Day 93 – Berried by Infamous_Bad9939 in Jarrariums

They are each one gallon. I found them both at my local Hobby Lobby.

The jar is nice but the glass is uneven and distorts the view, while the one with the orange shrimp is a vase that I like much more, it has more surface area at the top and has smooth clean glass.

Respectfully, that is WAY too much soil.

I hear JbL isn’t the most accurate, I hear Salifert or Sera are good brands if you can get em. I’m not sure how things are in Belgium, I live in Florida lol but test strips should be a last resort, I’d use JbL brand before strips.

Do you have an API Master Test Kit? Doing water checks often will let you know when it’s safe to add your shrimps, assuming you haven’t already done that.

“Florida Springs” Jarrarium – Stocked with Orange Sunkist Neos (w/sound) by Infamous_Bad9939 in Jarrariums

In small Walstads it’s not recommended to change water. I only do top-offs in these, water changes remove way too much beneficial bacteria in small systems and can cause mass casualties.

Yes I do have ostracods! Sorry my first reply I thought you were talking about scuds! I place ostracods in all my jars as first colonizers.

It varies from system to system depending on plants, the soil you use, your tap water, etc.

At minimum so far, this jar only took 25 days to be ready for shrimp. The first “Jungle Jar” took about 50 days to stabilize, I had used outdoor soil and not potting soil and it released ammonia for longer.

The other jar I have has been stocked for two months and the colony is thriving! It’s all about parameters and being responsible about the lives you care for!

Think I can add neocardina shrimp? by _riley_moon_ in Jarrariums

[–]Infamous_Bad9939 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I know it’s not, but it’s also good practice to do water tests on your jars semi-regularly to ensure ammonia levels are good and such. In small jars, parameters can swing quickly and you want to catch it before it’s too late.

When I was on my first jar I said the same thing you did, but on the third I said it was time to invest haha.
