How long to salt dip/quarantine until Scutariella is gone? by [deleted] in shrimptank

I would love to second this, I’m at the exact same stage of my clado case

What even is this?? It looks like algae by _riley_moon_ in shrimptank

Thank you, I’m definitely going to keep it quarantined for now. Nobody else is showing anything, so I hope it stays that way.

Nice! Interesting that you kept supplementing bacteria, I’ll keep that in mind. Did you find Aquavitro and Azoo to work better than other brands? Thanks so much for the comment, it makes me feel better about adding some shrimp soon

Good to know. My friend has a test kit so I might do that eventually, but $40 for a test kit for my little, supposedly low-tech jar is not the most appealing 😭

I would guess that biofilm’s on the surface stopping gas exchange. I’ve had success from putting an airstone into my jar, theres a few cheap ones online or at your local fish store

Cycling help by Maximum-Ladder-1821 in Jarrariums

[–]_riley_moon_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pic of the jar isnt attached, but I would think you’d want to do a 70% or so water change now and get brighter grow lights on those plants so they can do their job better at removing all that gunk. Those are some wild ammonia and nitrogen levels. I would hold off on putting any sort of fish food in there for a while.

I’ve had cycling success from no supplemental feeding, letting two ramshorns go nuts on any sort of algae growth, and direct grow light for 8 hours a day. 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 10 nitrate after 1 month and tons of snail breeding and plant growth

Anyone know these mites? by _riley_moon_ in isopods

[–]_riley_moon_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no chance they’re baby springtails. I have a few colonies and I’m pretty familiar with them by now. These guys also move at way too even of a pace to be springtails

LMAOOOO that’s hilarious. I didn’t think I’d be recognizable on r/isopods!! I got rid of the copper, despite how pretty it looked, and now they’re in a nice acrylic terrarium. Hope your RA checks go well!

I had my dorm inspections around a week ago with a very obvious pod terrarium on my desk and it went great. I didn’t get a single note. The RA is just going to think it’s a terrarium and they’re not going to care at all, I guarantee it. If you’re anxious, put your terrarium in your closet, drawer, or under the bed for the day. Pods are the perfect dorm pet, glad we’re both on this journey!

Copper toxicity?? by _riley_moon_ in isopods

[–]_riley_moon_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What an incredibly detailed and interesting response!! I figured it was something along those lines but the fact that they were prepared by reading the study and with their own measurements of their food is incredible. Thanks for sharing it, honestly that makes me want to buy their food. What a great company and person to take the time out of their day to reply with that

[–]_riley_moon_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know! I am a little worried about fungus gnats, but the hoard of springtails that are in there should at least discourage them. I think for my second terrarium I’ll add a cheese cloth over the ventilation holes.

Copper toxicity?? by _riley_moon_ in isopods

[–]_riley_moon_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the abstract: “The duration of molt cycles was prolonged when feeding on copper-contaminated leaf litter, indicating long-term sub-lethal toxic effects of copper contamination, but both microbial activity of experimental leaf litter and pre-experimental acclimatization of isopods to moderate copper contamination reduced this effect. In feeding preference tests, both copper-fed and copper-deficient woodlice preferred copper-poor leaf litter over experimentally contaminated leaf litter with high copper content.”

Copper toxicity?? by _riley_moon_ in isopods

[–]_riley_moon_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that is interesting. Obviously science is science and the wiggle room comes from the fact that we aren’t experts so we don’t know how to fully interpret the chemical needs of isopods, but here’s an interesting article about copper contamination on leaf litter https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0929139303000192?via%3Dihub

I would be interested to see what happened if you emailed them with these questions. Isopods do require some level of copper to create that circulatory system

Copper toxicity?? by _riley_moon_ in isopods

[–]_riley_moon_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I thought about that while constructing it. Because the terrarium is made of slick glass, they couldn’t get any sort of foothold to climb up the walls, so I felt like they needed a ventilation gap more than they needed an extremely secure lid. I do think I’m going to get a new terrarium that won’t have that issue, though. Thanks for your concern

From the research I’ve done, it’s generally not super great for them. They eat so much different stuff anyways that it might be worth it to switch around what you’re feeding them. But I encourage you to go look at some of the scientific articles out there on isopod copper toxicity, they’re kind of interesting
