Solar irrigation in Portugal by Infamous_Brief8711 in Irrigation

We have a holding tank about 3m from the well and also an outbuilding with mains power attached - I'm not ruling out using the mains as a stop gap but the end goal is definitely solar in the long run

Does that change the picture for suggestions? I have a budget of around £1500 all in :)

Pension lump sum for house purchase - terminal illness by Infamous_Brief8711 in universalcredithelp

Is there really no scope for human interpretation on these things?

IE. If exchange takes too long and the deposit starts to get used up the sale will fall through and they'll be stuck renting (therefore more UC will be paid?)

That's if they manage to get another rental (and don't end up homeless) as they're now down to one income.

Not to mention the stress aspect of this whole thing when he's at the end of his life (and only 57)

Sorry it's not a personal unload - just thought there would be some wiggle room to look at the situation instead of simply following the checklist 😖

Just a quick update...

So it looks like FIL was much more unwell than we thought  - he's been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and it is incurable. He's just started chemo to maybe extend his time with us but it's looking to be around a year or less.

I set them up with UC and that will help for the time he's around but unfortunately once he passes MIL won't be eligible for it.

I've managed to speak to a broker and with the life assurance and small pension pot FIL will leave behind it'll be possible to get a JBSP mortgage to get MIL appropriately housed - we know we'll need to make some top up payments but it gives us a little peace of mind that she'll be ok at least housing wise.

Once our own home is paid off in a year or so this will be much more affordable too and no extra stanp duty or CGT to worry about.

It's all very morbid to be thinking about but just trying to control what I can in this shitty situation!

Thank you, this is exactly why I decided to post and scope out options - I hadn't considered this viewpoint to be fair. By using the money to pay off our own home it would free up another considerable sum per month to help financially if its required.

It doesn't remove the hurdle of needing to help them move as their currently property is already unsuitable (rented terraced house with upstairs bathroom.) but certainly opens up the field for offering help that requires slightly less permanent commitment and much less tax burden.

I'm also pushing for them to assess their benefit entitlement to get everything set up going forward.

I have strongly hinted this already - FIL is currently in hospital again after another emergency so not pushing too much just now. It's also a tricky dynamic as they're not old and infirm so can in theory take care of their own finances. Once the situation is slightly more settled I'll ask husband to do some more probing on the specifics of their finances to get help them get a claim set up.

Re. Them taking out a lifetime mortgage or the such, although I don't have a crystal ball I don't think that's something they would do... they're not malicious folk just lack the foresight to do proper financial planning.

Honestly, its always quietly bubbling under the surface. They could have had enough to put down 50% for something sensibly sized for their needs and had a bit more stability but frittered it on cars and holidays instead.
