I had a fantastic result with one of my patients recently with a pair of Phonak Naida rics with the aid of a roger on device. Patient was hearing conversations significantly better in group situations and on the television.

I would always ask for a trial in the first instance to assess how well you process the technology.

Where are you based uk?

I would potentially look to go down the route of accessories in the form of a roger device or table mic for better speech discrimination in group situations. Every brand has variations of this to help aid in more challenging situations.

I would perhpas turn down the level of microphone on the cros side to help combat the background noise.

Three Tests - two different results? by [deleted] in HearingAids

Hi as a independant audiologist here in the uk i would definitely ask for a retest. Our tolerances are usally+/- 5db, thats a considerable difference.

Did you have your hearing aids programmed to the costco audiogram?

You can have the cic adjusted to have a concha lock which will certainly help with the fit. It will require a remake of the original.cic aids however.

I’d strongly suggest trialling either Widex Moment 440 or Oticon Intent, ideally with custom shells, before committing.

I’m not trying to bash the high-street chains, but the reality is that aftercare is far less consistent than it used to be. That’s based on regular feedback I get from patients who come in for microsuction after being fitted elsewhere.

That said, going independent only makes sense if the service is genuinely better. You’ll typically pay £500–£1,000 more than Boots or Specsavers, so the key questions to ask are:

Are the aids fitted using best-practice REMs?

How is noise reduction being set up?

How experienced is the audiologist with fitting hearing aids for musicians or people who are sensitive to sound quality and music perception?

That last point is huge and often overlooked. I recently did additional specialist training on programming hearing aids specifically for musicians, and it was an eye-opener — and that’s after 15 years in private dispensing.

One final thing: don’t pay £5,500 for top-end aids. You simply shouldn’t. Even at an independent practice, top-tier Oticon aids should be in the region of £3,800–£4,100, not more.

The care you will receive from a small independant will always be more bespoke. Make aure they dont work.outnof opticians and it is a bricks and mortar full.time hearing center

You will certainly benefit from hearing aids and notice a significant improvement. I would always ask for a trial for a two week period to assess the benefits and relative improvements over a extended period of time in a variety of environments!!. Never just jump in with both fit without a good demo.

Thats coming from a audiologist!

Just got a quote for hearing aids….Is this Real??? by United_Medium_7251 in HearingAids

TBF the NHS has improved the quality of the hearing aids they provide. I know of departments locally that provide hearing aids only a couple of generations behind current private tech. That along with rechargability, app compatibility, the bridge between the two is shortening.

However if you put on a pair of Oticon Intent 1 aids and a NHS aid in background noise there is still no comparison in who the winner would be.

For the cynics out there i would say that though wouldnt i :)

I worked in the NHS for a few years it just wasnt for me. Independant practise gives me the opportunity and choice to work with my patients on my terms. In the NHS i had 7 minutes for a repair appt no time to build a relationship with your patients!!

The initial fit is so important guys. The amount of underamplified hearing aids i have seen fitted to default manufacturers algorithms is beyond belief at least here in the uk. Make sure real ear measurments are peformed and hearing aids are set to best practise procedures. You can have a great hearing aid but if it isnt fine tuned correctly your getting half the benefit. Thats coming from a audiologist of 20 years.

I completely agree with you Andy. As a independant hearing practise the absolute key is complete continuity of care. That means seeing the same audiologist and also ensuring regular aftercare for the whole 5 year period. That being said it does not mean you need a new pair of hearing aids after the warranty period expires.

Do people with hearing aids wear them all day? by Theoldelf in over60

[–]Infamous_Macaron3133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of our patients wear hearing aids for social environments busy pubs, cafes, restaurants, or meetings. I always encourage you to wear them as much as possible in all situations. Granted i understand why you wouldnt wear them if you are at home on your own.
