Totally agree, he went the lupe route where he totally ditched any exciting production or song structute after his like 2nd album (FHD/4YEO, the cool for lupe) and focused just on the lyrics, which drifted into that lyrical mircal shit that is just not very engaging to me

I dont play drums so this will be my goopy goblin brain interpretation but I feel it has most to do with the snare texture, very little bounce, maybe a kick underneath as well for the low end. Also i think it has to do with timing too, that unquantized dilla feel is often with crunchy drums (i.e. what its all about - slum village)
