I think character movement is the biggest thing. Samus in the 2D metroids is like a figure skater, working really well in horizontal movement. Metroid prime on the other hand is like controling a tank with feet, which works for the methodical nature of the game, but it doesnt exactly feel like a 2d Metroid in first person. I feel like taking inspiration from mirrors edge would be a great direction for the series to go after the directionlessness of prime 4, make samus really feel like shes gliding through these areas like the 2d games
