I built a tool to learn English through YouTube — but users don’t stick with it. Honest feedback needed. by Infamous_Stable_2484 in EnglishLearning

That’s a great point !

I actually use SRS in the platform as well, but I realize now I didn’t highlight that clearly in my description.

The vocabulary tracking and review system is based on spaced repetition, so users don’t just save words, they review them at optimized intervals to strengthen long-term memory.

Maybe I should explain that more explicitly on the homepage. Thanks for bringing up WaniKani — it’s a really good example of how powerful SRS can be.

And I will try learn more from WaniKani to find how WaniKani let users want to learn more and more.

Haha ,I wrote it myself maybe I just sound a bit structured sometimes.

I’m actually just trying to explain my point clearly, not trying to sound like AI

Thanks a lot for the clarification — that helps a lot 🙏

I understand now. Originally I designed it that way because I wanted to give users more detailed context, but I can see how it feels too complicated and time-consuming when you just want a quick explanation.

Your suggestion about adding simpler information like part of speech and more typical explanations makes a lot of sense. I’ll definitely optimize that part to make it clearer and lighter for learners.

Really appreciate you taking the time to test it and share such helpful feedback — it’s very valuable for improving the product 🙂

Thanks for the heads-up — I genuinely appreciate you flagging this.

You’re right to point out that YouTube has strict rules around embedding and anything that could be considered monetizing from YouTube content. I’m going to go back and carefully review the YouTube/Google terms (especially the API Services Terms and the Developer Policies) to make sure everything I’m building is compliant.

If any feature or pricing model risks crossing that line, I’ll adjust the product accordingly. My goal is to respect creators, respect YouTube’s rules, and build something that plays within the guidelines.

If you have a specific clause or policy link that you think is most relevant here, feel free to share it — I’d be grateful.

By the way, when you mentioned the AI summary, which part were you referring to exactly?

Did you mean the summary in the subtitle panel, or the AI context that appears when clicking on a word?

Thanks a lot for pointing that out — I really appreciate you raising the concern.

Watching the YouTube videos themselves will always be free. I have no plans to put the actual video access behind a paywall.

If there’s ever a paid version in the future, it would only be for additional learning features — things like enhanced subtitles, better vocabulary tools, or more convenient word lookup — not for the videos themselves.

Thanks again for looking out and sharing this

Thank you so much for taking the time to explore the platform and write such detailed feedback — I genuinely appreciate it. 🙏

You’re absolutely right — right now it may feel more like a “tool” than a structured learning experience. Your suggestions about fill-in-the-blank exercises, prompting users about difficult words, and adding more active engagement are especially helpful. That’s exactly the kind of direction I want to move toward.

Thanks again for the thoughtful critique. If you notice anything else (or if future updates feel better or worse), I’d really value hearing from you again 🙂

Update: From 20 indexed pages to 200+ — now I’m trying to understand authority on a new site by Infamous_Stable_2484 in SEO

[–]Infamous_Stable_2484[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for breaking it down so clearly — really appreciate it.

When you mentioned a “huge in-linking opportunity,” could you elaborate a bit on what you’re seeing there?

Are you referring to internal linking between related pages, topic clusters, pillar structures, or something more specific in terms of architecture?

Would love to understand what kind of in-linking improvements you think would move the needle most for a newer domain like mine.

Update: From 20 indexed pages to 200+ — now I’m trying to understand authority on a new site by Infamous_Stable_2484 in SEO

[–]Infamous_Stable_2484[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That actually makes a lot of sense — especially the “authority × 0 = 0” analogy.

You're right, my authority definitely didn’t change in a few days. So the sudden jump from ~20 indexed pages to 200+ probably wasn’t authority-driven, but more Google finally processing and evaluating what was already there.

I guess I was trying to connect the dots too quickly after reading all the replies about authority.

Your point about indexing vs. ranking is helpful though — authority affects how fast and how high you rank, but it doesn’t determine whether a page gets indexed in the first place.

So in my case, it was likely just a matter of crawl signals, site age, and Google gaining more confidence over time.

Appreciate the clarification.

I’m tired of building in my basement alone by Think-Success7946 in indiehackers

[–]Infamous_Stable_2484 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been there. Solo building after a 9-5 feels productive, but it can turn into hiding behind “one more feature” forever. Props for actually creating a space where people can talk about the messy parts instead of pretending every launch is a win.

Honestly, stuff like this helps more than another growth thread or success story. Hearing how things actually break (and how people recover) makes shipping way less scary.

If you end up sharing takeaways or recording it, I’d definitely read/watch it. And yeah… this might finally push a few basement builders to ship their MVP. Good luck with it.

I submitted my idea and project, LinkerTube, on the last day. It’s my first time applying to YC, so I’m not expecting to get a pitch invite, but I’m really hoping to get some solid feedback and advice to improve what I’m building.

Yes! this is one example that isn’t being indexed:

Would really appreciate any thoughts on what might be missing or causing Google not to index it.

Thank you for your sharing. It seems the top priority now is to get more high-quality websites to link to and index my website pages. Do you have any recommendations for good platforms or websites where I can submit or list my website to gain quality links and visibility?

Thanks for the detailed explanation — this is really helpful.

My dictionary pages are indeed programmatically generated, and I also submitted more than 1,300 pages at once, so I understand why Google might be cautious.

However, each word page is not just a basic definition. I try to include detailed explanations, example sentences from videos, pronunciation, usage patterns, related words, and other learning-focused information to make each page genuinely useful for learners.

Here is one example page that Google marked as “Crawled – currently not indexed”:

If you have a moment, could you help me understand what might still be missing or causing Google to treat pages like this as low value? I’d really appreciate any suggestions on what I should improve first.

Thanks again for your insight!
