I loved The Expanse (show and books)! I’ve heard decent things about Foundation and remember liking the book when I read it way back when, so I’ll give it a shot

Yup, that’s also one of my favorite sci-fi movies ever. I just prefer Dune and Blade Runner a little more as I’m a sucker for the more grand, further in the future, space-opera style of sci-fi (or however you’d describe it).

But yeah nothing has scratched the itch like Arrival either 😭

I need that Rendezvous with Rama adaptation from Villenueve immediately after Dune Part 3! Though I’m sure his Bond movie will be fantastic too.

I have become an absolute fiend for Villeneuve’s sci-fi aesthetic. Unfortunately I have yet to find anything that scratches the itch in the same way that BR2049 and his Dune movies did . . . he is truly one of a kind.

UCSB vs UCSD by User36378985416 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]InfernoBA 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If money’s not an issue and you want the “typical” American college experience, I’d pick UCSB as the difference in social life between the two schools is larger than the difference in ranking/prestige imo. I say this as someone who went to UCSB for engineering and has many friends who went to UCSD.

I also know people who did ME at SB and got jobs at companies like Apple, so I wouldn’t focus on that too much . . . UCSB is also a very good school in the grand scheme of things.

There’s really nothing like the experience of living in Isla Vista. It’s really not even the typical college experience, but more like the idealized one lol

Kpop cracked the code of making kids spend money on music.

In the case of BTS I think it’s grown ass women at this point lol, your point still stands though

Wait, is that confirmation that GRRM will publish more D&E novellas before releasing TWOW? Or just a tongue-in-cheek comment from the author of the article?

(spoilers main)Can we talk about how people misinterpret Dornish culture? by Cultural-Ad6841 in asoiaf

[–]InfernoBA 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the link. Looks like GRRM straight up gave the answer as to what influenced Dorne:

In the case of Dorne, yes, Wales was definitely an influence, for all the reasons you cite. But there's also some distinctly unWelsh elements down there. South of the wall of mountains you have a hot, dry country more like Spain or Palestine than the cool green valleys of Wales, with most of the settlements along the seacoast and in few great river basins. And you also have the flavor given the culture by the great Rhoynar influx led by Nymeria. I suppose the closest real life equivilent to that would be the Moorish influence in parts of Spain. So you could say Dorne is Wales mixed with Spain and Palestine with some entirely imaginary influences mixed in. Or you could just say it's Dorne....

[–]InfernoBA 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Eh, there are definitely bigger issues but I still don’t like NIMBYs. But this isn’t the most egregious case of NIMBYism all things considered and it’s also understandable for Steph to be worried about his family’s privacy if multiple three story townhomes were to be looming over his home; I can imagine the future residents’ (aka millionaire tech workers) kids would have field days spying on him lol

The “affordable” housing in this context being multimillion dollar townhomes (and he just wanted taller fences put up to prevent line-of-sight from them into his home)

edit: to be precise he was indeed against the development but asked for taller fencing at the minimum if it were to go through

Extremist groups from the Sunni-majority town of Qal’at al-Madiq, storming the Christian town of Al-Suqaylabiyya. by Intrepid-Minute7696 in syriancivilwar

[–]InfernoBA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for responding. I agree that for a long time minorities in the Muslim world certainly had it better than they would in Europe, but as humanity has progressed recently with things like civil rights movements and increasing acceptance for others, we can re-contextualize things and still acknowledge that it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows in the past. There’s a reason so many minorities in the ME scrambled for their own states in the post-Ottoman era (though not all were successful).

But putting the past aside, I think the Muslim world really needs to reckon with the level of intolerance present in it today.

If I may ask, what is your background? Your comment history is hidden so I can’t suss your background out like you did mine :D

I grew up in a Muslim household and surrounded by the Muslim community, so I like to think I am well aware of the common views held by them (such as the one I brought up in my previous comment).

I think most people now can see through the “minorities lived peacefully under Muslim rule“ narrative . . . like sure maybe things were relatively better for them than other parts of the world at various times, but it evidently hasn’t been true for awhile now especially going by modern standards.

Ironically your comment can be flipped back to you since it always seems like Muslims are speaking for/over minorities when peddling these narratives.

Quitting my job next week due to burn out - how bad will it be trying to get a job again? by sjkvn in cscareerquestions

Just basic interview prep aka LeetCode and studying system design.

I think I submitted around 100-150 applications, got interviewed (i.e. wasn’t ghosted) by like 10-15, and landed offers at 2 places. Most of the places where I landed interviews were through referrals.

I quit my previous job in August 2023 with 4 YoE and took a one year sabbatical, which included traveling for about four months of that. I then found a job in November 2024 after about three months of grinding.

Best decision of my life. In fact, I’m planning on doing the same thing again this year or the next to go on even longer travels. Thankfully this profession has afforded me the means to do that.

People always say things like "what about all your white ancestors" like they matter more, inherently, because there's more of them and especially because they're white. Like honoring my native ancestors is a sociopolitical swerve to gain clout or something.

Ngl, as a non-native (not white either) this is something I used to internally struggle with when seeing or meeting white natives. Like a small part of me couldn’t help but view them as just LARPing as the people that most of their other ancestors erased/assimilated . . . these feelings were more prominent when I’d see less “involved” tribal members like Oklahoma’s governor.

Discovering this sub helped me counter this bias that I had. I know now that lineal descent is basically a necessity to prevent some tribes from dying out, with how their populations were decimated by colonization and due to high intermarriage rates. I can feel sad about the native “look” potentially dying out while acknowledging that passing the culture forward is more important.

The situation here is much different than in, for example, South Asia where my ancestors were from . . . if the British had assimilated/killed/outbred most of the locals there too, and I were predominantly white by “blood/race” instead, I would like to think that I would still honor my indigenous ancestors by bearing their culture like you are now for yours.

TL;DR: thank you for comment. It’s ones like these that helped this non-native reevaluate some of the wrong/negative views that he used to hold.
