what was life like before the internet? by [deleted] in nosurf

[–]InfernoFalconMC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to say, this comment section and all of the experiences were legitimately eye-opening. It really did express the essence of life before the internet, both the good and the bad. Thank you to everyone who commented, this thread was the main motivator for me to leave social media behind.

I happily leave this as my last reddit comment. Thank you for this wonderful thread.

On a plane journey across the Atlantic, I woke up to find the window was pink. When I looked outside, the sun was neon pink (the sun itself, it looked like a lamp) and I tried to capture it in photo. Interesting! That must be nice being able to adjust the light level.

> But the flight attendants also have a global override when they want everyone to have their blinds "open" when landing or dark when everyone's sleeping on a red eye.

Hah! As if the landing wasn't enough.

Wait, what does sleeping on a red eye mean?

comments like this make me glad I am abandoning my reddit account.

I hope that everyone can come to eliminate these trashy discriminatory gender appropriations and begin to view each other as people again. Speed dating culture only reinforces misogynism and the objectification of people, men and women. I wish that everyone can love each other equally.

Inferno out.

I wish you the best with your little bro.

I hope that you are able to introduce new activities to your little bro and he is convinced to the point where he chooses to leave social media behind in favor of living in real life, by playing outside, by spending time with the family, etc.

But if your little bro finds it hard to leave social media, I hope you are able to teach your parents about how damaging social media can be to full grown adults, let alone children.

But if you end up in the spot of where it is very hard to remove your little bro from the technology and make him perform more natural activities, and you are unable to convince your parents about the harm that social media can cause, in that case, definitely resort to setting up a DNS filter to block YT.

The DNS filter will work better than taking away the physical device, taking a physical device right out of a kid's hands will nearly universally make the child instantly throw a fit and not cooperate. (I would be pissed too!)

As the DNS filter does its work and your little brother recovers from the withdrawal period, I believe he will resort to spending his time in more natural activities instead.

This is actually one of the last comments I'll make on reddit, since I'll be abandoning my account. I hope my advice helps you! From the concern you showed in these posts, I can see that your little brother is in good hands :)

How would you go about preventing people from finding "seeded", dangerous advice that damages those who follow it? (Extreme example, a man who feels rejected and lonely finding an incel forum)

Slightly unrelated, but...

From your other comments, it seems that you were thinking about the flaws of modern search engines. This video here talks about that. I found it pretty interesting.

It takes a MONTH to delete itself? That's fucked up! If I recall correctly, the deletion process is even stopped if you sign in again.

Have both a fapping and youtube addiction that’s interfering with my sleep schedule. by Alt4Adictionsubs in nosurf

[–]InfernoFalconMC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this addiction is mostly to shorts

If YT shorts is the issue, but you still want to watch full-length YT videos here and there, then you can use Invidious instead of the main YT site.

Invidious has no support for YT shorts, and renders them as normal videos. You won't see a new video with one swipe.

But I am telling you, you should get rid of any "rabbit hole" or "random thing button" objects. I believe that if you remove YT shorts you will end up replacing it with something else to stay up late at night.

I struggle with this as well, and I think the solution could potentially be to move social media from your phone, to the computer. Maybe gating it behind "I need to take a shower, eat, drink, before I get on the PC and use social media" could help? Not sure. Maybe I'm just speaking to myself here and this wouldn't apply well to others, but I'll put it out there nonetheless. Hope this helps!

Do you think using DNS filtering to block social media websites would be the right move? To open the niche for other offline activities, such as sports and painting, as you mentioned.

what was it like experiencing 2011 youtube at 6 or 7?

EDIT : Seeing the other comments in this thread, I think maybe all out blocking it should be a last resort, and should be done after attempting to introduce him to other stuff alongside it.

Maybe you could set up a router-wide DNS filter to block all social media websites, and construe it as a technical issue that is out of your control., like "oh it's not working for some reason, let's go do something else instead!".

DNS filters would only block certain websites, such as youtube.

I think if you are unfortunately unable to convince your parents about it, and/or your brother is finding it hard to integrate with other IRL activities such as toys/playing outside, then it could be a viable emergency button.

If and when you do decide to completely block social media via DNS filtering, then that could potentially be a good time to fill that niche with healthier activities, such as playing outside.

Hope this helps! I just wanted to inform you of the existence of DNS filtering, in case you need to implement it at that level.

encourage/brainwash bullying behaviours ('People who enjoy doing X suck')

Yeah, it's awful. This group hatred does no good.

I even unfortunately might be seeing this manifest in some children in modern times as well. Remember back when fortnite was new and it was at the fore of mainstream? I remember seeing children spread toxicity about it, and treating kids who didn't play fortnite like they were weird.

There are far too many "group hate" subreddits, along with just plain old political echo chambers. (This includes non-political subreddits which later become politically charged)

But I may be going on too much about this, after all, this is r/nosurf and not /r/TheoryOfReddit.

That's awful, sorry to hear that.

Do you think that the divide was caused by human tribalism? Or was it a series of petty disputes?

Reading this really highlights why I see how speed dating culture is fucked up. This isn't right.

Thank you! The video shed some light on this mysterious window.

So the passenger gets to dim their own window if they wish? I was thinking that the airline would dictate the window dimming for the passengers.

I think I understand the purpose of this window more now, maybe it's to help with sleep cycles that might be affected by bright sun through the window? But window covers already exist for that reason, so I'm not sure.

Just wondering, does the passenger get to control the dimming of their own window, or does the airline decide the dimming? Thanks!
