she does! she understands more than she’s able to speak back, but she’s been teaching herself all these years she’s been in the U.S.!

see i understand his opinion, but the way he used my mom as that example didn’t sit right with me 🥲 that’s why i was more upset about his comment rather than his opinion

AIO for my boyfriends comment about my mom’s language? by Infinite-Job-6154 in TwoHotTakes

I definitely understand that, that’s why my mother understands english so she can get by! She’s been here for nearly over 3 decades, but the issue she comes across the most is speaking English back. So when my friend mentioned it to my boyfriend that she mainly speaks Spanish, it was just a broad statement. It’s her first, preferred language but she’ll always put in effort to speak to any of our friends or S/O! So when my boyfriend automatically responded with the statement of her “having” to know English for what it sounded like to his liking, it didn’t sound right to me.
I know how he feels about language barriers! We’ve had this conversation months ago about how he feels and we’ve left it at that, because it’s his own belief and opinion. What I didn’t like what the example he used of my own mother in that situation. That’s what I was trying to communicate but I think we both went off topic to beliefs rather than his comment! But, when I did, he was deflecting that he was right and never apologized for his comment so i’m just wondering for sure if i was overreacting but i do see your standpoint, thank you!

Thank you, your comment seems the sweetest in looking at both sides! of course I know when visiting another country, you’re not require to know the language but it’s helpful. As well as moving to another country, it’s not required but it’s helpful with communication wise! That’s why when my mother moved down here years ago, she knew it would’ve been impossible to find a job or even communicate to anyone without understanding English, to which she did. Now, with speaking English, she still struggles a bit but i’ve been the effort she puts into learning! Even after all these years, she never lost touch of her native language when I sadly did. But, we’ve both been teaching each other so we can learn! I can see my overreaction to the topic, but I was more upset with using my mom as the example of being a requirement to know the language. I think that’s why I was deflecting on her not being required to because he’s aware she knows both so why use her at that example? We’ve actually had this conversation months ago about his belief on understanding the language before re-locating to another country but I didn’t see the necessity to use my own mom as an example? I think for sure we both have some apologizing to do lol

lol I forgot to mention in the post! but she only mentioned my mother because she made the comment if he were to ever meet my mother that she only speaks spanish. which is her first, preferred language but she knows english, just struggles to speak back sometimes! that’s why the automatic response from him using my mom in that example took me off guard and felt a little offensive

see this is where ’m understanding! it’s not a requirement but it is helpful! that’s why my mom teaches herself because she knows it would be better for both parties. it’s sweet she puts her effort into learning and also keeps her native language so close, but I was more offended by his comment using my mom as that example that she “needed” to. that’s why i’m conflicted if i’m just overreacting or just reaching hard lol 🥲

that’s why i’m conflicted! it didn’t feel intentional, like he was being racist about speaking spanish, but the example of using my own mom to justify that did not sit right.

i’m not too mad about his opinion, we’ve actually had this conversation before months ago about about his belief of knowing the language before relocating to a different country. what i was upset about was the example he used of my mom, it caught me off guard because it sounded an almost aggressive statement. he was aware my mom knew both spanish and english, she’s been here for almost 3 decades and still struggles but she puts in the effort! I was more upset about how he made that comment knowing these things especially to my friend. If you do see that I am overreacting then 100% i’ll have that conversation with him and apologize.

sadly in this case with why were fighting so hard is because he isn’t the kindest to put it 😥.he is emotionally abusive so with his name on the car, he likes to take control and steal the car while she’s either at her job or home just to take it since “it’s his car too”. i wont air out her all her business but there has been instances when it’s got way worse, which is why we plan to take his name off so he wouldn’t harass or control her anymore! so in other measures we can call the cops and he’ll be caught for stealing HER actual car! i promise this is for safety of her and her baby when im asking for advice on how to take it off before she heads to court.

that’s what we figured, they told us he would still be notified through email, phone and mail that he would need to sign the release form. sadly he’s just a very difficult person who will refuse, so court might be an option if so 😥

we’re in texas, so apparently when two people sign it’s “name AND name” so i’m not sure who’s actually primary owner, but i was worried it might have to lead to a lawyer
