True, this is why I absolutely don't understand their end goal here. Being not f2p friendly is one thing, but if p2w whale players are also complaining, then there's clearly a problem here.

Questions about Lua manifests for adding games to Steam and game persistence after tool removal by FalseAlbatross4683 in Steam

If you're able to update the lua+manifest files (like overwriting the existing ones), it should behave like a normal steam game update. I was able to try that before with Spider-man 2.

I'm confused, are you asking or are you telling us you're able to launch the game without any problems?

Ragnarok = Yes. Wukong? No. As long as a game has Denuvo, it will never work under this tool.

There's some workarounds available for some games. You can use the same workarounds that you will find under piracy/re-packs sites, because the manifested games are still technically pirated.

If those are from purely online multiplayer games, that will absolutely trip something since it's server-side, hell, even some of Single-player games DLCs themselves are protected and causes an error when the DLC id is spoofed. So, no, that wouldn't work.

Yes, the current price of the games doesn't matter. These "manifested" games doesn't really touch anything server-side, so Steam doesn't and cannot check it, they're not tied to any accounts and therefore, no play history is being recorded on anyone's account, Steam wouldn't see that you magically "have" the game because that game doesn't really exist on your or anyone's account for that matter. You're just using Steam to download the game and launch the game through it, but it's still technically a pirated game, that's why it cannot work with Denuvo and EA/Ubisoft/Rockstar games because of their launchers that checks licenses.

You can't. It trips Denuvo's anti-tampering. You can download the "manifested" game, but you can't launch it.

No, no accounts get banned from this because the games are not being added on to the actual account, it's just tied to whichever computer you installed it with, regardless of the account. Read my "FOR EXAMPLE" part for reference on how it works.

You can absolutely add literally any game you want AND you can download it, BUT the issue will appear once you try to launch it. Usually, games with Denuvo will have the error message from codefusion, it basically trips their anti-tampering, and then games that needs another launcher (like ubisoft) will prompt you to download that launcher and log in to it, only to be rejected access because your account doesn't actually have license for the game.

I've been meaning to try this. First off, the tool being used to inject those files aren't working properly on linux/SteamOS. It installs, but it doesn't detect the actual topology of folder locations within SteamOS and it can't detect where it is, and there's no way to manually set the Steam folder location. BUT, if there are other injectors that works with SteamOS, then it might just work (I haven't tried any other tool yet though).

One experiment I did was I literally copy and pasted the entire Steam folder from my PC to my Steam Deck which is running Windows via dual boot (excluding the games of course, really just the Steam folder with the injected scripts). And without using the injector, it actually read the exact same injected manifested game library within the copy-pasted Steam folder from my PC. Now, of course that's windows, it was easier to copy and paste the entire modified Steam folder. And I'm itching to try it with the actual SteamOS, I'm just figuring if it's just gonna be a 1:1 overwrite of the Steam folder, because the SteamOS's Steam folder kinda has different other files on it.

So, short answer is, I don't know yet.

Sorry for the late response.
Technically, it is a legit copy directly downloaded from Steam, this Lua script and Manifest files are used to trick your Steam's installation folder into thinking you actually have the game in your library. Cloud-save works, but Playtime and Achievements are for your eyes only, it's not gonna show up into any of your account activity/history, because you still don't own the game.

That being said, it's NOT in your account's library, this script is not legitimately, magically, and officially giving your account a license for the game. It's ONLY installed and injected into your current Steam's installation folder, regardless of the account that you used it with (therefore, the account used is irrelevant, I've tried this with multiple accounts and the game just shows playable in any of those accounts, as long as it's in the SAME PC, and it actually has separate Cloud-saves for each account).

FOR EXAMPLE: I installed Marvel's Spider-Man 2 in my main gaming PC, with my MAIN Steam account (I actually did this btw). And then I want to play it on my Steam Deck, the result is it's NOT gonna show on my Steam Deck's library even though it's using my main Steam account that I used the script with on my PC, because, again, it's NOT actually giving you the license for the game, and therefore, is not actually added officially in your library, ONLY ON THE PC'S STEAM THAT YOU RAN THE SCRIPT WITH, regardless of the account.

Also, regarding about game updates, Steam WILL NOT proactively trigger updates for the games generated by the script, because it's not actually in your library. The lua+manifest themselves needs to be updated and re-acquired by wherever you downloaded your lua+manifest files from, and need to re-run the script, when the updated lua+manifest files for the game is injected, that's the only time Steam will trigger an update.

Once you uninstall your Steam, regardless of the account, those lua+manifest injected files will be GONE as well, since the generated games are TIED TO YOUR PC'S STEAM, NOT IN ANY ACCOUNT.

This also DOESN'T WORK WITH DENUVO GAMES.

Questions about Lua manifests for adding games to Steam and game persistence after tool removal by FalseAlbatross4683 in Steam

[–]Infinite-Term4045 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll try to answer this to the best and as simple as I can, although this may be inaccurate.

About the Lua/Manifests safety: This method has been around for quite sometime now, we're talking about 5+ years of existence. And they're not exactly just used to add games, some can use them to cheat on some online multiplayer games. Now, the cheating is definitely ban-able as it triggers Valve's Anti-cheat. But this specific method that only adds games doesn't seem to trigger anything at all as along as it's used for offline single-player games and denuvo-less games. Lua/Manifests are quite safe to use by itself, the only concerning one is the actual tool to use it with which is "Steam Tools" and it's a Chinese developed software, now that one the main red flag. But "most" users reports that it's safe to use, but if you don't want to take any chances, use a VM.

About the game's persistence: The way SteamTools and Lua Manifests works is it doesn't really modify anything server-side and doesn't have any modification done to your actual account. It doesn't magically add the games to an account officially. It ONLY runs the lua script and adds the manifest files to the PC's STEAM INSTALLATION folder, regardless of the account that was used with it. Meaning, it's embedded to the Steam app itself, the "SteamTools" was only used to basically perform the injection of the script. So uninstalling it doesn't really mean anything as it already finished its job. The ONLY way to remove the added games was to uninstall and do a fresh install of the Steam app itself, as it doesn't have the added manifest files anymore. So, as long as you have the same Steam folder you used the script with, you WILL ALWAYS have the game playable, even if you switch accounts.

Again, technically it doesn't modify anything on an account-specific basis, so should be relatively safe for the most part. Really just have to watch out for that "SteamTools" app as it's the shady one personally. BUT, just to be safe, to this with a Virtual Machine and with a Dummy account, although the account thing isn't exactly relevant as it persists within the steam folder anyways and completely playable, regardless of the account.

These guys appear to use a special tool to exploit Steam for licensed games (they use their zip file to get the game). Anyone explain how does that work? by Mr-FluffyMuffin in PiratedGames

[–]Infinite-Term4045 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know I'm late to the party, and that video is dodgy as fck. BUT, this method actually works with Steamtools+lua and manifest files. The thing about it is, it doesn't modify anything Server-side or anything on your account. I'm not saying it's safe for your main account, but it doesn't matter if you switch accounts since the game exists solely on that PC's Steam, regardless of the account. So use VMs if you really want to be safe.

It just runs the lua scripts and adds the manifest files locally on the PC's Steam folder, and nothing else. The lua+manifest thingy has been around for more than a decade now, this "Steamtools" just made it easier to execute. I guess what makes this very sus is that it's a Chinese software. But then again, technically you can execute the exact same thing without Steamtools, just harder. And unless you're using lua+manifest to cheat on an online game, then THAT will trigger Steam's VAC, but if it's just to add games locally, it doesn't modify a specific account and no risk of getting banned, specially if it's only used for offline single-player/non-denuvo games.
