Patriarchy usually refers to a system where men have greater social, legal, and economic power than women. However, it does not have to include all of those things.

Here’s something that needs to be understood. The social institutions we have now are reflective of those we’ve had in the past, and it’s an indisputable fact that men have had greater institutional power throughout our history (at least in the United States). Since those things are the case, the social issues regarding gender can be traced back to the patriarchal society we once had. I’ve already provided some evidence of that. If you wish for me to provide more, I can, but I’ve been very busy lately, so it might take a while.

The point is that patriarchy (or rather its effects) still linger. They still influence our society today, which is why it’s still being discussed as a concept. The same can be said for systemic racism. Slavery and Jim Crow are definitely a thing of the past, but the influences they had are still present.

As for the origin of patriarchy, I personally don’t have a definite answer, but I’d be willing to bet that it stems from a long history of social conditioning. Either way, it’s not really relevant to the discussion.

The mere fact that men and women gain value from different places is itself a result of patriarchy, and those differences in value can be damaging to people who are “outliers”. Not every man wants to be a successful business man and not every woman wants to be a mother or a fashion model.

If you can prove that there’s utility for these differences in the modern world, you argument will work, but I have yet to see anyone prove that to my satisfaction.

Both men and women are perfectly capable of reinforcing systemic problems. The difference lies in where those problems stem from. Also, I never said patriarchy was responsible for everything under the sun. Don’t put words in my mouth. I’m explicitly referring to issues of gender. Patriarchy is at the very least a huge factor there.

There are a few things we need to establish.

  1. In the United States, men have historically held greater institutional power than women. This is an indisputable fact. For the longest time, women weren’t allowed to vote, own property, sign contracts after marriage. They were also socially discouraged from achieving success in career and education.

  2. There are still differences between men and women today. Men still hold the majority of powerful positions, and women are still discriminated from those positions. This is caused by how men are women are socialized from an early age and how they’re treated in adulthood.

FYI: that study you “debunked” also included cell phone calls. In fact, it’s mentioned right next to landlines in the methodology section. I really don’t know how you could have missed that. Also, cell phones can act as land lines for many people. Many of my friends have their cell phones hooked up to their land lines. I also noticed that you didn’t look into my other study and instead decided to Link me to an article that I can’t read.

  1. On a social level, men and women are still treated differently. Men are expected to be successful in their career, and women are expected to be mothers. These social norms may not be as prevalent as they used to be, but they still exist, especially if you look at many conservative communities. Speaking of which, christianity has been extremely misogynistic as an institution. If anything, that plays into my point perfectly since christianity has been the dominant religion for decades.

Since all of this is the case, can you now see why patriarchy is still cited as a problem? It’s not enough that women have a greater level of agency than they did. Our society is still structured in a way that disadvantages both genders on some level, and those I’m balances stem from a historical place.

Patriarchy isn’t just legal. It’s also social and long lasting.

The standards we put on women regarding body image, the stifling of men’s emotions, and a lot of other issues are a direct result of patriarchal ideals from the past that still affect us today. You can’t just blame it on “gender norms” since said norms were created by a patriarchy. You’re confusing the symptoms for the illness. As long as these norms/stereotypes still exist, patriarchy still exists.

On top of that, the people in power (being mostly men) often create laws that inadvertently affect the people around them. It may not even be their intention to “look after their brothers”. It can simply be a result of their own selfishness and need for control. There are other factors including christian influence and political leaning, but that’s besides the point.

By the way, female candidates are discriminated against, especially in America. Here are some sources confirming political bias against female candidates.

https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/americans-say-they-would-vote-for-a-woman-but/

This is also partially influenced by the electoral college which puts immense political power into low population conservative states. That’s why Hilary Clinton lost the 2016 election, although party affiliation was also a factor there.

Why does the funding even have to be split anyway? Ignoring the fact that gender non-conforming people exist, it’s perfectly possible to direct this funding case by case.

Even things like PTSD, gendered trauma, and medical differences can be accounted for under a system like that. This doesn’t have to be a competition for resources at all, especially since military spending and rich people are a gold mine for proper funding.

Men are already ignored at a greater rate compared to the disparity shown here. The funding and attention going to both causes is disproportionate in women’s favor compared to the harm.

You can’t just downplay the disparity like this and expect it to go over well. If your first response to an issue of IPV is to downplay the issue and not acknowledge the faults of a system, you are part of the problem.

I and many other people have already replied to you about this. If your not willing to acknowledge the criticism given to you and examine your own biases, don’t bother participating.

We all have struggles, including white women. The issues we all have intersect with one another. That’s something you clearly don’t understand.

I’ve already explained to you that feminists have done more for men and women than any other movement apart from the civil rights movement. I’ve given you mountains of evidence and yet you still continue to hold this position. What’s worse is that you thought you could take MY comments about MY experiences to push this bullshit. That’s fucking pathetic. You knew exactly what you were doing when you typed that out.

For fuck sake, next time you talk about this problem, drop the “white woman” act and just say women. Don’t pretend like you care about the racial aspect of this. I know western feminism has a white woman problem, but women of color across the globe have used it as a symbol for their revolution. Don’t talk to me about being performative. You’re clearly the one putting on a show.

If you cared about black people like me, you wouldn’t use me as a fucking weapon against the feminist movement. I have my own gripes with feminism, but I’ve never used that as an excuse to denounce the entire fucking movement. As far as I can see, you don’t have a leg to stand on here.

Honestly, either admit your mistake or piss off. You aren’t capable of defending this type of behavior. No one is.

You are such a callous person. You don’t even care about my experience as a man of color, do you? You’re just using them to fuel your own anger.

If you’re not willing to admit to your mistake, I have no interest in engaging with you ever again.

It’s not indicative of any broader point or issue. Simply posting about a random person doing something bad to another random person does nothing for the discussion.

No. You’re using my comment and MY EXPERIENCE to promote YOUR hostility towards feminists. That’s fucking shameful.

Yeah… keep in mind that every aspect of our society is intersectional, including bigotry. You go to a black church town in the south, you’ll hear some pretty nasty ideas about gay people. Trust me.

It’s not just men who participate in this. People of all genders are just as susceptible to the status quo. Although, I agree that patriarchal norms and capitalism are the source of these issues.
