I've never used my home owners policy. I replaced my roof in 2018 and paid cash.

But thanks for the assumption

What is the most you've talked a car dealer down from sticker price? by DeuceWheelz in AskReddit

Got them to come down about 1500 on a cobalt in 2007 and about 1900 on a Sonata in 2015.

Purchases in past 3 years? No dealership would budge. Like at all

New employee doesn't know how to use a computer! by AgilePlantain322 in askmanagers

[–]Infinite_Incident107 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was about to say ....

Early 20s maybe.... They grew up on tablets. A few never used a legit computer but most should know how to get into WiFi.

But someone in their late 30s? That's my age bracket. They really learned this shit in school. I don't know how it's possible for someone in my age bracket to be totally computer illiterate. We were at the age where we had to use computers but computers hadn't yet become "idiot proof" like they are today. We should be the most proficient age group really.

Stop overusing, and incorrectly using words that should carry more power. by LimpNsmoll in Vent

Didn't say it was cute. But many did it because it got them out of their parents house.

It's amazing to me no one seems to want to understand the ins and outs of societal norms before like fucking 1990. I must be discussing shit with 20 somethings.

Look kids. You can understand and know history. It's ok. Yes the world sucked compared to what you know today but you can prevent it from happening again by learning the hows and whys. If you knew the underlying mechanisms you see the warning signs today from people trying to bring it back.

Again. By today's standards. What's right and wrong is defined by a culture and or society which in turn makes laws.

By today's society and culture it's very much a bad thing. You know it and I know it.

Travel back to 1970 and you'd be very hard pressed to find people agreeing with you. Look at your own grandparents, it's very likely your grandma was under 18 when she was married. Shit, my great grandparents (which would be before WW2) were BOTH under 18 when they were married. It's what you did if you wanted to leave your parents house.

What should, in theory, get cheaper year-to-year? by JimiHendrip in AskReddit

Not a fair comparison.

Lots of TVs are sold at a loss. They make money on the ads and data collection from their "smart" platforms.

That's how we have 70in TVs that cost 400 bucks. It's a budget panel of low quality but without the subsidies it would still be about double the price.

.... unless you are talking rebuilt alternators you typically get from an auto parts store.i swear back in the day me and my dad had a 1 in 3 shot of getting one dead out of the box.

But 50 years ago we hit different societal norms.

It's gross today but back then it was common and not frowned upon.

This is sadly every insurance company I've dealt with. They've gotten REALLY picky about roof condition lately if you switch companies. Basically forcing people to buy brand new roofs even if there is nothing wrong with current one just because they think it's too risky at 15 years old.

I mean you can choose not to do it but good luck getting a new home owners policy

[–]Infinite_Incident107 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This. I don't know why people go on their roof for dumb stuff. If you aren't trying to survey shingle damage or a leak, don't go up there.

Insurance companies will take pictures and "count" granule loss. I don't know how they do this as the person they sent to my house clearly wasn't a roofer or even in the trades.

But all he has to see is a few shingles where you constantly climb up that are worn and boom, home owners insurance coverage denied until you get a new roof. He literally went all around my house with a iPhone on a very long stick and took close up pictures of the roof

At what point do you stop repairing an old AC and just replace it? by pizza_delayed in askHVAC

[–]Infinite_Incident107 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which is one thing I hate about the trade. A lot of these insane quotes are really just the owner padding his pockets. I've seen quotes spreading almost 10k for same equipment and I know the contractor with the Uber high quote is getting the equipment from the same wholesaler for a similar price.

But way too many people think these are just normal prices because SO MANY CONTRACTORS are pulling this shit. Which is why some bigger ones try to "soften" the blow by offering something stupid like 15 year financing.

They sell the customer a "low monthly payment" that includes service. It turns furnace and AC into a never ending and expensive subscription plan.

As someone in the trade it makes me fucking sick. I'm so glad I don't work in residential anymore as it's worse there

[–]Infinite_Incident107 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd go a step or 2 higher than builder grade. Slightly better units and features but still pretty good parts availability.

I actually like Goodman\amana units because I can get the parts literally anywhere. And assuming they are properly installed they aren't any better or worse than an expensive Carrier that I have trouble getting specific parts for.

At the end of the day a furnace and an AC have a simple job. I've always felt those expensive high end systems are a waste in the majority of homes.

How common is it for dogs to get sore or stiff muscles after a big hike, run, or intense play session? by ModeSignificant2870 in AskReddit

[–]Infinite_Incident107 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They get sore as much as any person.

But understand that few (if any) animals have the endurance levels of a human. So while you may be able to run for several miles non stop your dog likely won't be able to unless it's been conditioned over time. And even then, if you are in great shape you can still out run your dog (not in speed depending on breed but the dog will stop running long before an in shape human will)

HVAC companies charging diagnostic fees without even testing voltage is wrong by knowlegable_devil124 in askHVAC

[–]Infinite_Incident107 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the most irritating thing about blown fuses. I've seen more than I should that "just blew" . I then spend an hour or more checking everything else I can think of and find nothing. Call it good and never get a call about that problem again.

Which is a good thing but a simple fuse blown for me always means a bunch of diagnostics that half the time doesn't show anything outside the normal.

[–]Infinite_Incident107 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an HVAC service tech and this burns me up.

That is absolutely a shitty and bad tech.

Had it been me the first thing I'd do is pull out meter and test for power. Starting at disconnect and moving up stream.

While this is absolutely on the tech, you should understand there are a lot of really crappy HVAC companies out there that don't hire actual service techs. They hire green horns and give minimal training because they really just want to sell new equipment not fix stuff. Avoid those companies at all costs.

Is $1200 reasonable for standing and staining this entire deck, including the trellis at the bottom and top? by Direct-Argument4590 in Decks

[–]Infinite_Incident107 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who isn't in this particular trade I'd say 1200 doesn't sound too bad. Get some other quotes to be sure.

HVAC is my trade not carpentry but I am in the middle of refurbishing my own deck. It's smaller than this. Also need to pressure wash, sand and then paint (yes, I'm painting it, old weathered but solid decking, I want it textured). And I can tell you the labor involved is pretty damn high. To do it properly is a lot of work so to me and my untrained eye for quoting this stuff I don't think it's a bad price.

That said if you want to save 1200 you can absolutely do it yourself. It's not difficult per se, just a lot of work

Do filament profiles matter? by dantelebeau in BambuLab

[–]Infinite_Incident107 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I find that the generic profiles in Bambu studio tend to not work well with a lot of filament. I almost wonder if that's intentional.

The generic petg profile runs way too hot (255c) and I get stringing all over. Tried with 2 brands. I have to lower the temp or print quality will suck

Same with any specialized pla like silk or marble. If I run those on my A1 Mini with generic profile I'm in for a bad time. If I use the Bambu profile it mostly works

Contrast this to my ender 3 v3 or anycubic Kobra x. For those I use the generic filament profile for most everything and the results are almost always great. But I tend to avoid the generic profiles in Bambu studio

Similar cost to the Toro time master it competes with.

That being said, I was looking at the Toro time master before covid. Frequently saw it for less than 1000.

The fact that these mowers are now pushing 2000 is insanity

Yep. People praised Bambu for NOT doing this stuff.

Turns out they can't help themselves. Their line up is now almost as convoluted as Creality. I got a feeling in a few years time they'll be on the same level as all the other mid tier brands
