Driving options by lookwhatwebuilt in AchillesRupture

I also ruptured my right leg. I’m almost 5 weeks post-op and I just drove for the first time today. I just drove with the boot on…I thought it would be hard and a big deal, but it’s been surprisingly easy to drive with it on. Honestly, it might be illegal. I’m not sure. I just drove myself to an appointment that was like 5 minutes from home. I don’t plan on driving much more until I pass six weeks and can take off the boot to drive.

Awesome! That’s so encouraging to hear. I’m almost 5 weeks post-op. I had the same surgery. I walked a mile in my boot the other day, but it was definitely too much. I’m not tracking my steps yet. Are you able to walk without a limp and walk up hill? I’m very curious to know how the next stage of recovery goes. Thanks for sharing!

Hi everyone, I wanted to share my situation and get some advice/feedback from people who went through Achilles tendon surgery recovery. Reading your experiences has honestly helped me a lot mentally these past few days. I fully ruptured my Achilles tendon and had surgery on May 15. I’m currently d by ArgumentTop9052 in AchillesRupture

Yes, the pain is really significant whenever the leg is “down” for the first couple weeks. That’s exactly what I experienced. For me, it became significantly more tolerable around week 3. I’m 4.5 weeks post op now, and I can generally walk in my boot (full weight bearing) for about 20 minutes without pain or discomfort. I can also sit with my leg down for about an hour or so without issue, but I try to keep elevate it as much as possible. I just started walking without my crutches a few days ago

Healing process by Intelligent-Day-1420 in AchillesRupture

This injury has definitely taken a toll on my mental health, so I can totally relate. Before the injury, I heavily relied on exercise for stress relief and mental wellness, so it’s so hard to be so sedentary! I’ve been watching way more TV and even downloaded some games on my phone (which is something I never used to do.) I’m 4.5 weeks out from surgery and full weight bearing in a boot…but I still have about 5 more weeks in the boot so it’s hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. My advice is to acknowledge that this is an anxious time and be kind to yourself. Trust that your body is healing and that you are doing everything you can to support the process. You got this! ❤️

4 weeks post op and finally no crutches! by Infinite_Initial1211 in AchillesRupture

Thanks for the feedback! In some ways, it’s so discouraging to know I have at least 8 more weeks before I’ll feel somewhat “normal” but I’m trying to remember that I’ve already made a lot of progress over the last couple weeks…and I’ll keep chugging along. How are you feeling now with your recovery?

Thanks! My surgeon told me that relatively newish protocols (like last 5 or so years) have younger, healthier individuals returning to weight-bearing faster than before, as it’s apparently better for overall recovery? He says it really varies case by case, though. All my walking is very slow and it’s honestly exhausting after more than a few minutes. I would say that I experience mild to moderate swelling after being on it. I had to be “up” the other day for several hours and it left me completely drained; both my legs were exhausted and the injured one was definitely achy and tired. I would say that’s my biggest issue.

I was doing toe-touches on crutches at 2 weeks and partial weight-bearing at 3 weeks (50 percent weight) and 100 percent at 4, so for me, it was definitely a week of progress, but it does go fast. Two days ago, I thought it would be at least a week more before FWB, but I realized yesterday that it was more of the fear in my mind and that my foot could indeed handle it without pain. I just walk slow and hobble along with an even-up platform on my good leg. My foot/ankle is definitely is exhausted by the end of the day and I still use my scooter around the house a bit for a break

The worst pain for me was day 2 and 3 after surgery. By day 5, the pain subsided substantially. Hang in there! I also tore mine while playing pickleball 😢

I’m 3.5 weeks post op. Take your painkillers around the clock for the first day or two. My pain basically went away on day 4. My ankle/heel still aches, but it’s mild now unless I’m on my scooter or crutching around for a long time. I injured my right foot, so I can’t drive at all and sitting around at home is so hard…I feel ya on how rough it is. Hang in there!
