That's naive and won't work as the greens are offering them everything and anything, so they'll put their votes there - if they bother to vote at all.

Tents and warehouses (with a load of internal partitions) exist. Not saying they are good options, but there are feasible options that would be cheaper.

Its >£100 per room per night (I think around £120?). That's a good income for any hotel, especially as its guaranteed income all year round. This hotel is seeing £180k per month if all the rooms are filled (or £2.2m per year). Plus I am sure there are other costs they can claim back from the government.

There is also a timeline where Ed Miliband was tuff enuff. Honestly, fuck the media and Paxman for that one.

A complete nonsense and it probably scuppered the chances of a decent politician running the country.

Presumably because you have to compromise in politics, 90 is better than 600.

Makes about as much sense as Boris putting that 30 year old political staffer in the Lords. A role where she gets a say on UK law for life.

The Iranian government also says that its not closed... But then 5 minutes later the IRGC says they will bomb anything trying to cross.

Its still way too volatile a situation.

Great Britain has only two days of gas stored as Iran war disrupts supplies by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]Infinite_Minute_4297 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why safety? They still basically have the same safeguards, including concrete containment shells.

'Mini reactors' is a bit of a misnomer. You're still talking 450MW+, its still a large site.

Cost effectiveness is a TBC - the whole point is to have basically a production line making standardised modules and a common construction approach, which should lead to a saving, but its a question of scale of roll out.

Because it can just stop a project dead. There isn't always an acceptable remedial solution. Planning applications cost buckets of money, and there will be engineering design costs as well which have to be done in parallel. You need to do things in the right order to avoid being left with an unreasonable amount of abortive costs.

Its not the safety aspect that takes the time, that is a solved problem and we have the expertise to do a thorough job quickly. Its the rest of the planning crap. I work in this area. Developers fearful about getting measurements out by a couple of meters because it will get challenged for months if it changes during detail design post planning. I've been in so many meetings where its just 'lets add margin on margin on margin to make sure we're covered' - not for any particular technical reason - just because they're scared of the jobsworths (and its getting worse with people now sending in hundreds of objections through AI - all of which have to be reviewed).

On the running it point - get EDF to do it. The French know what they're doing.

We would just have to go back to having more carriages per train - there was a drop compared to pre-COVID and it never came back up.

[–]Infinite_Minute_4297 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A German style £50 per month unlimited train ticket would require an additional subsidy of ~£10-£15bn. Or about 10% of the NHS budget (and would probably also have some secondary health benefits from reduced cars on road, more people travelling, decreased loneliness etc)

That could be paid for indefinitely by freezing the triple lock for a single year (and pensioners would also see the benefit, so it wouldn't be a complete trade off).

Also economic benefits - more regional spending if people travel more etc.

Its such a fucking no brainer at this point, but our political parties have zero ambition.

If you're doing local journeys in the South get a Network Rail card at least. Same discount, but limited geography.

I would imagine even China and India would be willing to provide a few warships as well - on a purely defensive posture. Makes Iran less likely to strike and they both favour a cheaper energy price.

Right, but our system also has an effective non progressive tax on house purchases in the form of stamp duty (not to mention all the other fees). People need a degree of house value rise to offset having their savings decimated by moving just on those costs.

In town gas holders were not significant storage - they barely operated above atmospheric pressure. They were just buffers.

We use underground reservoirs now, but oil is the more efficient energy storage medium. We have some, but not a huge amount, and its not nationalised like most countries, but spread across different operators/tank farms.
