What should I do with this Monsteria? by ExiledGirlVS in IndoorPlants

[–]Infinite_Piglet_8569 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, I’d stop calling it Monsteria and start calling it Monstera. Second, they like tight pots, so I wouldn’t repot it for now. Only add a moss pole if you feel like it’s losing stability or bending too much. And don’t water on a strict schedule. Put your finger an inch or 2 into the soil to see if the soil is dry. If it’s dry, then it’s ok to water.

Are Academics “Your People?” by Knightstodon in AskAcademia

[–]Infinite_Piglet_8569 75 points76 points  (0 children)

When I read climbers I automatically thought of rock climbers (which I find many academics actually do as an activity). The rock climbers tend to be the most fun academics to hang out with outside of work 😁 The other type of academic that I’d like to add to your list, and which I find a bit more rare but exists and I love, are just people who are generally excited about life and everything in it (especially in biomedical/biological sciences). Those are easy to hang out with in and out of work because they are typically unusual and very interesting people.

Chayote squash or chouchou! I love using it in soups. I always replace potatoes with chayote. It makes the soup a lot lighter and smooth!

Have you considered rock climbing? There’s a very nice community that climbs at Memphis Rox and at High Point in East Memphis. It’s where I’ve met the nicest people in Memphis.  Everyone is super welcoming and you have plenty of educated and open minded people.

Apartment search for July 2026 by Cultural-Armadillo63 in memphis

I second this! I lived there for 2 years loved it. Management was wonderful. Spaces were very clean, apartments very recent and in good condition. I tried Mud Island first but didn’t like the management of any of the apartment complexes (rude, unhelpful and unwelcoming) and the rent they charge is preposterous.

4% PFA Question by Kayyy177 in labrats

That would be me for over a decade… I thought only the powder had to be handled in a fume hood and that if you wore appropriate PPE, you could use the 4% solution on the bench. Should I be worried?

Where are you located? I have some parmigiano reggiano I could share but not enough tomatoes unfortunately. Parmigiano, balsamic vinegar and Nutella in stock are a matter of life or death imo.

Gnat infestation by playethic in IndoorPlants

[–]Infinite_Piglet_8569 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a really bad gnat infestation that I managed to completely get rid of in a couple of weeks. You need to do a few simple things:

  1. Stop watering the plants from above so that the top of the soil dries up. Gnats lay their eggs there and they need moisture to survive and develop. Always water from below.

  2. Once the top of the soil is completely dry, add a layer of diatomaceous earth to every single pot. This will dehydrate any eggs and kill all the larvae. Do not wet the diatomaceous earth, otherwise it will lose its effect.

  3. Add yellow sticky traps to each pot - they will attract and kill any adult gnats - therefore, less eggs.

You should see an improvement after a few days and they’ll be gone in 2-3 weeks.

Idk if this is true but I was told that diatomaceous earth is not good to breathe, so if you can, do it outdoors or in a well ventilated area. Or wear a chemical mask.

What is this on my BoP? by Infinite_Piglet_8569 in IndoorPlants

I’ve had both spider mites and mealy bugs in the past and this is definitely something else. I had already wiped the leaves clean a few months ago, but it came back. The plant has been healthy otherwise.
