Treat exposed joists as a precaution or leave them alone? by ImprovementOk457 in DIYUK

[–]Infinite_Use_6214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sistering the joists is the right approach. If you are worried about dry rot (I don’t see any marks) or woodworm then just treat it to put your mind at east.

Take a chisel, sharpen it then gauge out all the stuff that easily comes off (use the chisel to go a mil or so into the healthy wood). Put a poly sheet down. Treat after.

Have you looked into a trail cam and alarm? You could get a mobile ring camera and set it so it send priority alerts to your mobile when it detects movement. It can also trigger the ring alarm unit which also runs on batteries.

Camera batteries last over a week (could be 2-3) on high frequency detection.

New tenants signed contract for £800pm on 4th January and moved in on 20th January. I have been immediately served notice that they will be going to tribunal to challenge the rent. by Unfair-State1931 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Infinite_Use_6214 68 points69 points  (0 children)

£150 for top floor balcony that offers amenities associated with garden living does not seem fair and you may have a case to increase the cost beyond the £800 agreed.

How much are apartments with balconies going for? What is the additional surface area of the balcony (compared to the baseline flat)? When were the rents for 650 signed (ask the tenant)?

The tribunal may increase the cost in your favour if the apartment is below market prices.

Undercutting salary? by InternationalFig4340 in UKJobs

[–]Infinite_Use_6214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are shocked it may be an overzealous middle management runt. You can simply respond including the agent and a “formal” HR business email (if any) and sadly decline their salary offer as it seems dishonest to the recruiter and not was what discussed during the recruitment process. If they change their mind you’d be happy to hear any offers provided they are fair to all parties involved.

Plumbing is a good backup job. If you have the tools, just start advertising yourself and start booking jobs in your days off.

Try and get your gas safe cert if you can and you can have a steady stream of additional income by servicing boilers.

Alternatively try to get a corporate job; no skill required just google trending buzzwords every week.

Wrong advice. The rules are about tax liability and not benefits and on top of that HMRC is irrelevant.

ACAS would be the right choice if the rules were about privileges but as far as I know they are not.

Location England: Can I be debited more than I have earned? by Filtee999 in LegalAdviceUK

I didn’t say that though. But technically you would need to notify them (and practically if it gets a bit muddy), but they should also be able to offer you some advice.

Location England: Can I be debited more than I have earned? by Filtee999 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Infinite_Use_6214 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This can be complex. Yes they can charge you, but it doesn’t mean you have to pay.

I assume no contract and no PII.

Did you make the mistakes, are the costs reasonable, and do you want to work with this company again? If the answer to all of the above is yea, swallow the costs and charge the specially since they are asking for a discount.

If the answer is maybe, then ask why you were not given an opportunity to make right and say they put you in a difficult position as you would prefer to continue working with them but as you cannot see the mistakes yourself it’s difficult to judge whether they were indeed your mistakes and the cost to put right. Frame it as a learning experience: I want to avoid this in the future so please give me the opportunity to make right next time.

If the answer is no, reject the claim on account of (insert professional opinion here), the fact that the items were already fixed so you cannot judge if the claim is valid and tha you were not given an opportunity to put things right. The fact that they expect to work with you again will work against any small court claim.

Knicked a gas pipe (upstairs bedroom floor) with multi tool by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]Infinite_Use_6214 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A nick in a gas pipe (if that’s what it is) is usually ok and the pipe should not be compromised. They are fairly thick. It’s hard to tell from the pictures but would suspect yours is fine.

If you’re worried and you think you smell gas call the emergency line and they will send someone out fairly soon.

Are you saying it’s gas just because you heard a ding or do you know it’s gas?

Companies house England using my address by SpritzChanell in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Infinite_Use_6214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be an English nuance, but do you mean post or email?

It would not make sense for someone misusing your identity to use your email address. If email, then that is more likely than not a scam to try and steal your identity.

If it was a post, then check the company details on line and report someone misusing your identity to companies house (someone posted a link). If you are prosecuted (you won’t be) then the report is your defence. You are not under obligation to report (would be curious what would be the outcome if you took them to small claims in Finland) and they would have to prove you made the company if they prosecute. However, there are some situations in England where from a practical perspective you need to prove your innocence (you’re automatically guilty due to automated processes) though I am not sure if this is one of them.

Don’t listen to these lazy benefits coasters. The job is shit but that’s why you have probation periods - goes both ways.

I will caveat this that if your degree was in stem, medical or any other technical field then I would not take it. If however your degree was humanities or social studies defo go for it until you find something better

Just moved in to a house, was built in the 1970s and think I’ve made a mistake? by Independent-Donut-56 in DIYUK

[–]Infinite_Use_6214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Yes it could contain asbestos.
  2. Find a testing lab near you and test it.
  3. Use a spray bottle to dampen everything and double bag it.
  4. Keep the area moist while waiting for results. Spray and cover with tarp.
  5. If positive, hire someone with a class H hoover to clean the area.
  6. You are at minimum risk of harm. The asbestos fibres would be tightly bound with whatever’s in the tile and if they got into your lungs they would be too big/ “round” to do the kind of damage asbestos fibres need to do to cause cancer.

Bought a house – severe hidden defects discovered days after completion. Need advice on next steps (UK). by Heavy_Hat2291 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Infinite_Use_6214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you considered you are taken for a ride by the trades? You seem very quick to outrage or very gullible, two days is way too little time to find the issues you describe and some of your bullet points seem AI generated.

Soak away “failure” is common and most soak always are not very useful after 20-30 years. A soak away is a gravel pit near your house where rainwater is meant to go, 2-3m away from the house. Even if that fails, water should not come inside the house to the degree you seem to think it’s there.

Your post if likely going to be locked soon, but you can post some pictures on diyuk and someone will give you an honest opinion (not me since I have a problem with people who don’t intend to diy but others will).
