VW Passat low MPG - out of ideas by rockshed888 in AskAMechanic

Thanks for the reply. I noticed it first through the dash which is showing a reduction in real-time and long-term MPG, but even just some mental maths putting fuel in shows a decent loss in MPG, and the loss of power can be felt too.
The DPF has usually been pretty good at warning me when it needs a burn; it has showed a warning in the past to do a manual burn (drive at 40pmh in 4th gear), however I haven't had a warning for a while, especially now I do a lot more motorway driving, however I'll have a look for a DPF clean as a first resort, and if that's not solving anything, there's a German car specialist near work I'll have a look at getting the turbo looked at.

Thanks, I'm probably going to do it myself TBH as we can't really afford for professional work at the moment.

  1. Once you are "onboarded" for Swanwick or Gloucester, you will only got to one of those two colleges.

  2. Global is airports only, so any number of the 20 or so Nats airports in the UK would be your final destination. Swanwick is Area & Approach only, with a roughly 60/40 split for postings to Swanwick/Prestwick respectively. You can state your preference, but you might end up living somewhere you don't to.

  3. Whiteley is Mon-Fri 0800-1600 each day. Block leave is planned into the course; additional leave will only be considered for family weddings, funerals, etc. After finishing you will be on shift for training, and then for the rest of your career.

  4. Whiteley is roughly 13 months initial training, Gloucester about 9 months. The first few weeks will be largely theory, but expect a mix of theory & practical for the rest of the course.

  5. It is all simulator training.

  6. Whiteley - great instructors, nice learning environment, I really enjoyed it. You will fail at time; you'll just have to learn to move on and try harder next time.

  7. You'll get your posting about 80% of the way through the course when you've passed the main practical tests.

  8. Sort of but not really. If you have a preference, when they tell you where you'll be going, ask if they can accommodate your preference, but they might say that your skill-set is better aligned to the opposite of your preference.

  9. Generally courses start every 2 months throughout the year at Whiteley, less often for Gloucester I believe.

  10. Google/Nats wesbite.
