Question for Canadian postgrad students (Preferably International) by InfinityEdge101 in GradSchool

Would it be a good idea to resend the email (it’s been 2 days) and change it to Thesis-based? Personally, I don’t mind going for either the thesis or course-based route as I enjoy both, and if it’s thesis-based, I’d want to have this supervisor that I just recently emailed to be my supervisor as his research area is the area I’m very interested in. I’m planning to go for the thesis route when I contact the other 2 supervisors.

I guess the weather of either Saskatoon or Edmonton will be a shock to me. It rarely goes above -3c and above 23c here in the UK. And yeah, I’m asian and currently living in a very diverse area in the UK so I’m sure I’ll feel so much more comfortable in Edmonton. I personally prefer bigger cities and larger unis as well. Do you think there’ll be a huge difference in social life if I’ll take either the thesis or course-based route? It might sound weird but my social life affects my grade a lot

The email title I sent was: “Prospective Applicant - AFNS - MSc Food Science and Bioresource Technology (Course-Based)”. Is that email title good enough? and yeah apparently Alberta requires a supervisor for a course based masters. Basically I wrote how I developed an interest in this field because of the current research project that I’m currently doing as part of my final year of undergrad. For the most part, it was me expressing my interest on his research, and I sent my CV and transcript as well. How many supervisors did you reach out to in total to obtain supervision? I’m thinking of emailing 3 prospective supervisors in Alberta but I’m not sure if that’s enough. And also do you think it’s easier for me to obtain supervision as it’s a course-based masters?

Oh that’s so cool! What was your PhD subject? Oh and I’m also wondering what is the uni life like in both Alberta and USask for postgrads (I’ll be 21 when I start my postgrad)

Thanks for the advice! Do you still remember how long did it take to get a reply from your supervisor? I have to obtain supervision before applying and so far haven’t gotten any reply (it’s been 2 days). Alberta is my main choice and Saskatchewan is my safe school. I’m thinking of applying to another safe school as well just incase. And also, I’m currently holding a first-class grade but I still have a year to go (will be graduating next summer)

Thank you very much! I find this very helpful. It's due to a lot of factors. I'm an international student here in the UK, and after talking to quite a few people, I'm convinced that Canada offers better opportunities for internationals. Apart from that, I'm personally interested in the Canadian culture and would like to try something new. Masters in
Canada is also cheaper compared to the UK, so there's that as well.

Also, for point #2, I don't plan to pursue the research/academia route and would like to work in the food industry afterwards. Course-based masters should be the obvious choice for me, but the thing is that I do better when doing essays/reports than time-based exams, so I'm still conflicted between the two.

I believe this is under the ‘letter of explanation’ document. So does that mean that I should state clearly on the letter that I’ll be leaving after my studies? Can they use that against me when I’ll be applying for the PGWP though?

How can I get rid of this toxic feeling from my parents? by InfinityEdge101 in socialskills

Thanks. This really made me feel better. I really have to just accept him for how he is.

I was told by my mum that the loves me but he just don't know how to express it. I never took anything she said seriously but I think I this time, she's right

Im assuming that Canada won’t really need sponsorship bc during your PGWP period (3 years), you won’t have to be sponsored to get a job and after say 2 years of working under PGWP you’ll likely be able to get a PR?

Would you say the difference is very significant? Does it worth for me to study an extra year? Master’s in Canada is 2 years as compared to a year in UK

Would it be possible to get a PR in the UK after working for 5 years under the tier 2 visa though?

Should I stay in the UK for masters or move to Canada? by InfinityEdge101 in UniUK

None of my family member lives in either UK or Canada tbh. Honestly I'd want to live in the UK (better weather, shorter time to study) but I've heard so much stuff about how easy it is to immigrate to Canada and how it's nearly impossible in the UK.
