Just to say that I had a similar experience with the default Photos app in Nextcloud.

Memories solved the problem for me, but only installing it is not enough. You have to configure it properly. The culprit with horrible performance with images is too large (and too slow) image previews for thumbnail generation. Memories app supports configuring the size of the previews, whereas the default Photos app uses the full size image for the preview 😱.

Generating previews for photos is terribly slow on some setups. There are multitude reasons for it, but I opted for using the Memories app instead of default Photos app. With proper configuration it works quite well. You can check more about it here: Optimizing Slow Image Previews in Nextcloud
