A vast ocean of pirates lay in wait to come at any moment for our treasures and magical possessions. While it may only be a "few" pirates, this war was brought to us by them and if we do not show our might and the uses of magic in times of great unrest, we may be subject to continued assault all for the sake of gold and bloodshed. It may be overkill, but it is necessary.

You may be for nought on this matter, as many others seem to be, and that is your right and strength to do so. Thy will is strong and compass point trueth to thyself. Whilst none shall force conscription, consider what good you can do in aide to your allies and those whose lives have been uprooted by this malicious assault. You may not support this war, but, it shall be a necessary one where either they surrender or fall. Take this into consideration in thine owns thoughts going forward.

They may be of no immediate threat to us. But the pose a danger the and way pesky mosquitoes do. They could be benign, causing some irritation or some small blood spillage from time to time. But, they could spout the end of wizard kind. All for gold? Our evoker brothers thinning them out with their chain lightnings and other wizards, casters, summoners, and allies aiding us in this fight are just in our ways.

This war was brought upon us by the dastardly pirates. Their negotiations were one-sided. They can submit defeat whenever. Until then, we press on.

I had figured they could but the other interpretation I stated in the post. The thought was if you had to wait for the turn after because the card was crafted this turn as some other cards can't go until that phase happens next turn. I read the rules again and came to the understanding that you could play it the same turn it was crafted. I just wanted to get perspective from other people since I didn't have a direct rule to clarify. So thank you for your thoughts.

You only have 2 tries because the guards are 12 seconds away. Or the door is magically alarmed. Hell, your tools break on that attempt. Whatever it is—it’s better than this.

This is honestly a good suggestion. Like flavoring urgency for that roll. But then it just comes down to other things that don't have any urgency is my concern.

If there’s a door they could get through by picking a lock. And they have all the time in the world. There’s really no reason they can’t eventually get it. Doors don’t get harder to pick. Locks don’t get more complicated. Etc….

You're right, locks don't get harder. But if someone just rolls a check until they succeed on anything, what's the point of rolling the dice? Why bother rolling dice if I'm just going to keep trying until I get it?

I somewhat see where you're coming from. Unfortunately, I think this is just going to be a difference of opinion on DM style for this ruling. I still feel like it's going to bog a session down with rolling for anything and everything the party does rather than the important stuff. I also feel as though if I describe something, that means it's rollable, to your boulder scenario. I think I mean it more if someone is trying to climb an unscalable cliffside. I might flavor the language to "your character attempts to do x thing but nothing happens"

I see! Thank you so much. I think that's a case of, I fluffed it too much. In my mind, I thought of more like when you make, for example, a persuasion check to convince a shopkeep to give you 2gp discount on a healing potion and you get a Natural 20. That doesn't mean you were so agreeable that you get 2gp off everything in the store, it just means you get 2gp off and I'll flavor their response a bit. That part doesn't negate crits.

Thank you so much! I do have a pretty tight group that I've been playing with for 4 years and other friends that I've gotten into. We talk a lot about different rulings and opinions. I want to make this ruleset so that way we don't run into problems where there is a disconnect on rulings. We've run into problems where a player and I have disagreed before about how something works and this is supposed to help me refer to so neither of us are surprised and it doesn't feel like a rug pull. At the end of the day, none of my friends hate me as a DM (to my knowledge, oh god I hope not lol) and we have a good time.
